Hope your first week back has been okay. Id like to start with a big well done to Yes Miss, No Miss for their gig on Tuesday and an equally big thank you to all you LGBTers that came to show your support. It makes me feel all warm inside.
Now, onto business. In order for us all to have some fun before the real stress of exams begins, our lovely events officer Hannah has organised an Otley Run for this coming Saturday (28th). The theme is grannies and granddads, so it shouldnt take too much effort to put together a super costume. Its the usual drill, 3pm at Woodies. If you are late or cant find us, ring Hannah on 07717415471 and well get you safely into the LGBTs bosom. I look forward to seeing you all, especially any new folk that want to pop along.
Coffee hours are on this week as usual (12-2), and hopefully well be upstairs in the Arc. Sorry to anyone last week who couldnt find us, we had to move to one of the meeting rooms downstairs. It was out of our control.
Oh, and as usual, if you do want to come to any events, but feel shy or intimidated for any reason, then send a quick email to us at the society address and well have a chat.
Thats all for now, and my word of the week is chryselephantine, which describes a statue decorated with both ivory and gold. Oh yes.

This is a bit out of the ordinary, but we have important news to discuss.
The most important is the issue of our LGBT Summer Ball. Our lovely events officer Hannah has been working at full speed to get this sorted. And it will be big this year.
Basically, we can have a ball in Blackpool for only £75ish, from the 1st-3rd of June. This price includes two nights stay, the ball itself (which will include food), the transportation there and back and possibly free entry into local clubs. Which sounds like a bargain really. Itll be like a mini holiday. Obviously, Blackpool will be full of things to do during the time when people arent getting ready for the ball or being hungover, such as the arcades and the Pleasure Beach.
However, if this plan is to go ahead, then to make the most of the deals offered to us we need your input within the next 24-48hours. Just to say if you would like to come, and if not any particular reason why. Either email the society, post on the forum, or text Hannah on 07717415471. Then wed need deposits (of around ten pounds) and decisions by the middle of next week,
I know its a bit rushed, but it would be an amazing time, and Hannah has been bartering with these guys to get us some good deals.
Okay, obviously if the general consensus is against this idea, then well organise a Leeds based ball.
Ive also got a couple of minor notices for you, now the super important stuff is out of the way.
Firstly, Poptastic is no more on a Saturday in Leeds. So, sad times all around.
Secondly, also Mission related, is that remember that to use you gold card on a Thursday, you have to be at the doors by 11pm. Management has recently had a bit of a change around, and so I know we all enjoyed that extra half an hour in Blayds or wherever, but its only half an hour difference.
And lastly, this Saturday is the Otley Run. Please remember that you are representing our society in the way that you conduct yourselves. There has been a recent spate of trouble surrounding Otley Runs, and we dont want to get caught up in it. But, do all have fun (or else!). And we should hopefully be ending the night in Fab Café in case any of you guys get lost, or just want to meet us at the end.
Word of the half week kuchen the German word for cake, a beautiful creation. Yum.
Events innit, At 1pm there will be a BBQ at Lupton Residence in Headingley (behind the Arndale Centre). BYOPlonk and food. After this the plan is to go to the Courtyard Party at QC at 4pm. So come along to either bit.
Any of you interested in being International Officer should get your manifestos in ASAP. They only need to be about 200 words, nothing fancy. Just explain why you want to do it really. Friday is the deadline.
An EGM is also being held next Wednesday to elect our new International Officer. There will be more information on that soon.
Coffee hours are ending after this week in preparation for exams and shizzle. But people will probably still be floating around the uni looking for procrastination.
Word of the week - "cyclone".
Jeni. xx
(Part two. Because I'm a fool)
Okay folks.
Sorry about the email last night. It wasn't my finest. So just to qualify...
There is a BBQ next Sunday at 1pm at Lupton. BYOB and food. You can bring picnic stuff or things for the BBQ. Plus, a waterfight may be going ahead, so if you'd like to join in we advise that you bring a chnage of clothes.
Coffee hours are finishing *next* Friday. Not this Friday.
Just a quickie to remind you all about the ball. Those that want to go need to have their deposits in by Wednesday. It'll be a completely ace and the best night ever. There will be someone in the LGBT office between 12-1 tomorrow and Wednesday to collect deposits. The office is upstairs, on the way to the Arc, on the left hand side. If you get confused text me (Jeni) on 07727039015.
Don't forget! It is £25 not including travel to come just to the ball, or you can pay £75 and get a weekend away gaying it up in blackpool, with breakfast for two days, cards which get you drinks offers in a number of bars, and the leavers' ball, and transport on the train to get there.
Good luck with any work or exams!
The word of the week is - "limber" as in "Those dancers are well limber".
Basically, after hearing from society members about the Blackpool ball we have decided that it makes more sense to hold the ball in Leeds, as this would cut the cost and complication and allow many more members to come.
So here is the low down:
If you have already paid your deposit and still want to come, then that's fine. We have it on record and you're sorted. If you have already paid your deposit, but don't want to come anymore, that is also fine and you can get a refund.
Those who now would like to join us at the ball that have yet to pay a deposit (of £20) need to do so as soon as possible. In order to get your deposits we will be having a few little "events". Firstly, there is a wind down at the Old Bar on Saturday (the 19th) at 2pm. It's a chance to chillax from the exam stress and hand in your deposits. Plus, we will be having a coffee hour next Monday (12-2) in the Arc. If you cannot make either of these DON'T FRET! Text Hannah B on 07717415471 or email the society and we'll get you sorted.
Okay. I'd also like to intoriduce to you your new Internation Officer...... Carl! He's ace and lovely, and will do a great job. If you have any queries for him, email the society and it'll reach him.
Right. Now get back to work you bunch of scallywags!
This is the final word on the ball. As you are aware, it's now in Leeds.
It will be on the 4th of June at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, on Wellington Street (near to the train station). The Facebook group has a link to a map, if anyone needs it. The tickets are £25, which includes a sit down 3 course meal and DJ.
We'll be heading off to QC afterwards, to continue the fun. Woo.
Sally Street and others will be at the Old Bar on Saturday between 2 and 3 to collect the full amount. Those people that have just paid the deposit of £20 will also need to pay their final £5. If you are unable to pay on Saturday, contact this email address or text Hannah B on 07717415471
Heres another quick email about the ball, I know how you all love them!
Basically, we need your pennies. So well be in the Old Bar on Tuesday and Wednesday during the usual coffee hour times (12-2) collecting it. Come along even if youve paid or are not coming to the ball at all. Just come and be social.
A quick recap of the balltastic details:
WHEN: 4th June
WHERE: Crowne Plaza Hotel (LEEDS - wellington street)
tickets cost £25, which includes a 3 course meal and DJs
its going to be amazing, and hopefully those of you who were put off by the price or the journey might come along now!
Hope to see you all (especially the leavers!) there.
Or, contact Hannah on 07717415471, or Sally on 07849965073, or Emma on 07966527092 for any issues with when to pay.
OR email us at luu.lgbt@leeds.ac.uk
Its going to be ace, QC afterwards and knowing Hannah, we may be able to get in for a reduced price...
Okay, so see you all soon hopefully!
Word(s) of the week is nacho cheese because it is an amazing invention.
Hello all, hope youve had great fun over summer and are making the most of these last few weeks of loveliness.
This email is about a very exciting event in the first term the LGBT Awareness Day. It will be on Friday 5th October and we have booked the Riley Smith Hall for the entire day. The plan is to fill it with informative and interesting stalls, and to make it inviting and lively to encourage people to come in and see whats going on.
The stalls weve decided on so far are listed below, but if you guys have any more ideas just email the committee.
Arty stand, LGBT issues in the workplace, law, trans, sexual awareness, international, LGBT in the media, pink pound, literature, the scene, history of gay symbols, drugs, sports and the LGBT at Uni. Well also have a wall on which people can place their positive and negative experiences of being part of the LGBT community.
Many of these stalls are being (wo)manned by committee members, but we are appealing for your help and support to make this event as successful and powerful as it can be. If anyone is willing to man the pink pound, literature, drugs, or sports tables then please contact the committee. Thank you!
Well also be raising money for LGBT charities and so if anyone is feeling creative you could make things to be sold. These can be anything from t-shirts to time machines*, or even a beautiful collage of women cut out of magazines.
There are more exciting ideas in the pipeline for this day, so stay tuned!
Word of the summer is
COPPER-BOOM! This means hurry up.
Oh! And get on the forum, the freshers and new members are starting to post. Make them feel welcome. Woo woo.
Basically, the Awareness Day has been moved to the 11th October. Sorry for any inconvenience! But we still want to hear from anyone that would like to help with the day. Itll be such a fab day.
Also, dont forget that it is now Freshers Week, and so tomorrow we have the sign up booth in the Riley Smith Hall. Come along and sign up to the society (as well as any others that take your fancy) and say hello. But dont worry if you cant make it, because you can join the society at any time by going to the ARC in the Union or by contacting a committee member.
Firstly, Im sad to be the bearer of bad news but Sally Street has decided to step down as co-chair. Here are some beautiful words from Sally:
Dear all,
Ive recently made, sadly, the decision to leave the committee. Ive had to take on a lot of unforeseen commitments over the summer, which has meant that I feel I just dont have the time. It may seem rather abrupt, so I would like to reassure everyone that I started the year with every intention of seeing it through, it hasnt been an easy decision, and I think itll be better for everyone as, if I was to carry on, I wouldnt be able to properly commit.
Thanks everyone, Ill really miss it!
If anyone has any issues with my leaving, please come and talk to me or Emma.
Sniff. Sad sad times. On behalf of the committee Id like to publicly thank Sally for all of the hard work shes put into the society, well miss you (not that youll be far away!).
Secondly, this email will be the last one all you lot get unless youve rejoined the society. So get moving, otherwise youll miss my beautiful words but they will be on the forum in case youre a lazy bum.
Welcome to the society all you fresh folk, and welcome back to all the old crusties!
Im just going to quickly give a run down of whats happening this week. In the future, the email will tell you the events more in advance, but since youve only just joined, this was not possible.
Righty-ho, tonight are the meals. Weve split the group into two, men and women, and so just go to whichever meal you feel most comfortable in. Well be meeting at the beloved Parkinson Steps at 7pm, and heading down into town to eat some tasty tasty Peri Peri chicken chicken. The mens meal is at the Nandos in The Light, and is booked for 7.30. The womens meal is at the Nandos on Lower Briggate (conveniently right near to QC and whatnot), and is booked for 8pm. Afterwards, Hannah will be taking people over to QC for some dancing and cheap(ish) drinks.
Thursday is the BIG EVENT. Its our infamous Scene Tour. Basically meet at the Parkinson Steps at 7pm again, and follow the stream of members into town. Then youll be shown the delights of most of the Leeds gay scene (we are too big a group to fit into some of the places). Many of the members are hardened drinkers and so will be drinking at every place, but dont feel pressured to go past your limit since we need you to make it to the end the fantastic Ice Cream! Its the new alternative queer night at the ****pit and you get free entry before 11.30pm with those beautiful laminated cards you have. Of course, if thats not your scene, Im sure a few stragglers will be going to Homo at Mission, which is more dance music orientated.
Other than this, we have coffee hour Monday to Friday. It takes place upstairs in the Union, in the ARC. Between 12 and 2 you will be provided with plenty of free tea and coffee, as well as a relaxed space to work, eat your lunch or just have a chat with people.
Hope to see you all soon!
Words of the week Where are you from? What are you studying? What did you do for A-Levels? Where are you living? questions that you freshers are going to get frustrated with soon!
This is a very infrequent event, but here is a mid-week email. Full of important info.
Basically, in the past couple of weeks there have been a few incidences of drink spiking come to our attention. This is a very serious issue, and so we thought it best to send out an email to you all before our big big night out on Thursday.
Signs to look for: - A person going from normal/merry to extremely wasted in a matter of minutes. A sudden change. - Slumping/dropping to sleep - Slurred speech - Loss of ability to move - Inability to focus - Memory loss - Confused - Spaced out appearance and manner - Scared
What to do: - Talk to the person, and try to find out their name/address/birthday, who they are with/any friends to contact. - If they cant remember details ask yes/no questions any response is better than none. - Keep talking to them, and keep them informed (if you are going to move them, etc) - Get them outside to fresh air and give them water (no more than 1 pint of water per hour) - If you have an address or friend to contact for them, get them in a taxi and take them there. - If the person becomes unconscious, shake/tap/shout at them (take note of how long they are out for). - Put in recovery position and ring for an ambulance. Go with them. - Upon getting the person home, put them in bed (sleep is good), and keep an eye on their breathing, etc. - When satisfied, leave then to sleep with a glass of water and pain killers for morning.
(thanks to Nic)
Weve also bought a load of Spikeys for Thursday. You just pop them in the top of your bottle, and put a straw through, making it very hard to slip anything into your drink. We also recommend that you try to stick to bottled drinks, they are easier to dance with and protect.
Okay, so onto a couple of other bits and pieces.
Super Hannah has wrangled some drinks deals for out Thursday Scene Tour, but you can only claim them with you beautiful laminated LGBT card. So dont forget them! And Sally (official friend of the committee) is organising an LGBT Society debate on October 16th.
This house would remove the permanent blood ban on men who have/have had sex with men
Okay, so get your thinking caps on. We need three speakers for either side (1st, 2nd and one to sum up), and theyll need a two-minute speech each. Itll be chaired by myself and Emma, in case it all gets to rowdy (haha). There will be drinks afterwards and fun, so everyone should come. But for now, just get thinking if youd like to take part. Oh, and if you just want some good debating practise, then why not pick the side you dont agree with?
Word of the (mid)week Winter. There was definitely a chill in the air last night. And my nips are like tiny pebbles today.
The one main event this week is the Bingo/Violator combo. Basically, meet at the parky steps at 7.30pm and well take you to Blayds (the best place in the world, and my personal fave pub ever especially after they sang happy birthday to me. Woo woo). So, well play a bit of bingo, perhaps win a bit of cash. And then head on to the New Penny for Violator. You oldies know all about this night, but for those that have never been its ace! The DJs are the Violator guys, which you may have seen Djing at the new night Ice Cream. Everyone has fun at Violator! I promise.
Dont forget to keep thinking about the debate on the 16th, and also check out the forum to suggest ideas for the Otley Run costume theme.
Oh oh oh, and check out the new website. It will soon be finished, with all the committee profiles completed and some fun things dotted about.
Word(s) of the week Freshers Flu. Boooooooooooooooo.
Firstly, emails will be sent on a Monday at around this time from now on, because we hold committee meetings at 3pm each Monday in the ARC. The meetings are open, so any member can come and sit in.
Secondly, dont forget about coffee hour! Monday Friday, 12 - 2, upstairs in the ARC. Free tea and coffee made by committee folks (dont forget your Ps and Qs though guys!). Coffee Hour on Thursday will be in the Riley Smith Hall. But more about that.
Here.
The Awareness Day/Rainbow Fair is taking place this Thursday in the Riley Smith Hall, between 11-3(ish). Itll be fun! We have lots of stalls arts and crafts, LGBT and law, trans, sexual awareness and welfare, international, LGBT and the media, LGBT literature, pink pound, the Scene, LGBT symbols, drugs (and haircutting by V perhaps). Well also have some other things going on, including guest speakers and a visit from the Yorkshire Terriers a local gay football club. If you want to get involved, get in touch!
Thursday evening, use your beautiful laminated cards to get into Ice Cream at ****pit. Our very own Yes Miss No Miss are playing! Go and have a boogie and show your support. If youve never seen YMNM play before, then youre in for a treat! Four smexy ladies making ace ace music.
Monday 16th is the debate, which is currently being organised. This house would remove the permanent blood ban on men who have/have had sex with me. V is now chairing the event, as Im off to a gig. But Im sad to be missing it. Itll be fun, and will make a change from the alcohol based events that we run throughout the year (but people will be going for drinks in the Old Bar afterwards). This is at 6pm in the ARC, and the room will be signposted.
A date for your diaries: the Blackpool trip is the 16th-18th of November. Dont forget! More info will come soon.
And finally, a quick recap on how to access our forum.
-- Either google leeds lgbt forum, or use click on http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=21236 . (Or follow the link on the society website) -- At the top, in the box that says members login click on new member -- Fill in all the details and click register -- You may be sent an email, from which youll have to click on another link to confirm the address. (This may be sent to your junk mail) -- You should then be able to post. If not, email me at this address and Ill sort you out!!
Okay, thats all! And thats a lot of info in one email. So keep it safe! Word of the week Bam bam bam, bam bam bam bam bam. (The theme tune to Alias AKA the reason Ive done no work).
Jeni. xxxxxxxx
Sorry for the very very stupid typo, that Hannah kindly pointed out.
Firstly, its the debate this evening. Hope youre all raring to go! There will also be a short talk from the lovely blood bank people at the end, then Im guessing people will probably be drawn towards the Old Bar. 6pm in Room 8 in the Union.
This Thursday we have the PMS (Pre-Mission Social). We have free passes to Mission for this night, so come along to the Old Bar at 8pm for a lovely time. At about 9pm, well wander down to Mook in town for 2-4-1 ****tails until Mission time. Dont forget youre student cards for Mook.
Next Monday, we have a film night. I know that the Freshers Pack said that it would be on Sunday 21st, but we had to do a quick change last night. Sorry for any inconvenience. Well be showing Another Gay Movie, so come to Mine for 7pm. Well have popcorn for you to enjoy, and stick around afterwards for a nice socialise. Not that youd all run off straight away anyway! Come, look dapper, and maybe cop a feel on the back row.
The Otley Run (27th Oct) theme is :: drumroll :: things with more/less than 2 legs. So get youre thinking caps on you could be an animal, a table, or legless!
I know many of you will be wondering about the dead celebs theme, but this we thought was more appropriate for our fright-fully super All Hallows Eve party. This will be on Wednesday 31st October. Come to Xibit for a spooky time (time tbc). Daisy will be Djing, and well all do the monster mash.
Keep thinking about Blackpool. 16th -18th November. Save about £50 for the trip.
Plus, soon well have some dental dams for you all. Were going to have to ask for a small price of 50p per dam, but thats £1 cheaper than buying in a shop!
And finally, thanks for everyone that came to the Awareness Day! Wed love any feedback. Here are the raffle winners:
Nando's Meal - Emily Ruston Xibit Meal - Emily Jefferies Bottle of Vodka - Mary Mission passes - Maths Kate Hip flask - Kate Collins Shandy - Sophie Beer Bow & arrows - Nic Carlsberg box Sophie P Bag of sweets 1 Jeni S " 2 - Hannah B " 3 - Hannah Radley " 4 - Amy Sciberras
Thanks to everyone that made the debate such a successful event last week! Super stuff. Well have another debate soon, and this time youll be able to vote for the topic on the forum.
Events this week are some fun fun Karaoke on Wednesday. This is at the New Penny at 8.30pm. Well meet there, but if you want to come along and dont know where it is, just drop us an email. Get your vocal chords ready (or your laughing gear).
Plus, Wednesday Coffee Hour will give you the opportunity to buy croissants and jam for 70p. Yum yum.
Saturday is our big event. The Otley Run! It starts at 3pm at Woodies Ale House in Headingley. You can get the 95, 96 or the 1 bus up to the pub. There will be prizes throughout the day, so look sharp. The costume theme is anything with fewer or more than 2 legs. If you make it all the way through, well be at the New Penny in the evening for some cheesy dancing.
This one isnt an official event, but Suck My Left One is on this Friday at The Common Place. They play ace music, ranging from Riot Grrl to Disney tunes and its a very relaxed atmosphere. But dont play out too late, we want you to be superfine on Saturday.
Plus, dont forget about the Halloween Party on the 31st, and Blackpool 16th-18th November. More details will follow. I promise!
Okay, now to some official business.
Firstly, there is a new LGBT Assembly Chair. Sophia James! Heres some quick info about the assembly - Part of the assembly will involve discussing the things we want to see change within our union, writing up plans for our ideas and taking them to the University's Union Council, where our case will be heard and our motions passed. The assembly will also help to implement these changes into our union and run awareness workshops/debates/campaigns within the union.
Check the forum for contact details for Sophia, which well have soon.
Sadly our Mens Officer Tom has decided to step down. I am sorry to step down but don't feel like I have the time and energy required to be on the committee at the moment. If youd be interested in running for this position write a brief manifesto (100-200 words) and email it to the society by 5th November. The E.G.M will take place the following week (date TBC).
And lastly, GayAbandon (the ace Gay Choir) are having a Gala Auction on the 26th October, The Queens Arms (on Harrogate Road). 8pm late and tickets are a fiver. Plus, feel free to join the choir!
Okay, thats all.
Word of the week Nell. An awesome film, starring Jodie Foster. Chicka chicka pea.
Its a crazy week for weather, freezing cold but sunny. I dont know how to dress appropriately!
The events this week are:
Wednesday its the Halloween party at Xibit! Were joining up with Leeds Met for this one, and the costume theme is Dead Celebrities. Now remember folks, this party is at a real venue not your own private house, were representing the Union (ambassadors if you will get out the Ferrero Rochers). So use your heads, and dont try and be really cool by wearing something foolishly offensive. Anyway, it starts at 8.00pm and well be providing a tasty spread for you. So get some tacky gore and a wig and come for a boogie. If you arent sure where Xibit is give us an email and heres Hannah Bithells number 07717415471. Oh, and its also our very own secretarys birthday on Wednesday, so dont forget to wish V a very Happy Birthday!!
Once again Thursday will bring along the eternal question; Ice Cream or Homo? Well, if you are going out, some lovely ladies that you may recognise are DJing at Ice Cream (Mase, V and a couple of other loverlies). And check out the flyer Mission sent to us, Ive posted it on the forum.
Sunday we have another film night! This time well be watching But Im a Cheerleadereven if youve seen it many times before come along. What better way to round off your weekend? Im tempted to bring a blanket and fall asleep, as I do everytime I sit down to watch a film. Okay, so thats 7.00pm in Mine Bar on Sunday. Come along. Itll be fun.
A quick change for your diaries the next debate will be next Tuesday, rather than tomorrow. This will give us all more time to recruit you into taking part and formulating your arguments. After the debate well head into town for Blayds bingo and then some fun time dancing at Violator (The New Penny). Room and time will be in the next email. The topic will be on the forum tomorrow and will be publicised at the coffee hours.
Speaking of emails, if you miss one or cant access your account or anything like that, you can now find the emails on the website. In the News section. Yep yep. And of course, the forum is always full of info you may need.
If youd like to run for mens officer, your manifestos (of 100-200 words) should be in by Monday 5th November, and the EGM will take place the following week. Send the manifestos to the society email address, thank you.
And dont forget the Blackpool trip! Join the Facebook event Ive created and come into a coffee hour to book your place. Its £50, for 2 nights accommodation with a small breakfast, transport and were right by the gay bars.
Word of the week Umbrella. This word is such an interesting one. Not only did Rihanna create a beautiful song, but it is just so interesting as a word!! The latin umbra meaning shade, mixed with the latin umbella meaning parasol. It makes me a little bit excited. Words! Lets all play Boggle together.
Firstly, we are having a debate tonight in the Union at 6pm in the ARC on cottaging.
This house would legalise cottaging/dogging in certain areas
Okay, so come along, and get involved. People seem to like talking about this topic already, so it should be a good one. Afterwards, well be wandering down to Blayds for some bingo, and then on to Violator disco at the New Penny.
This Thursday, Yes Miss No Miss will be supporting the band Tiny Tin Lady at Brudenell Social Club, which is right near to Royal Park Pub in Hyde Park. If youre still unsure as to where it is, drop us an email. It starts at 7.30pm, and costs £2. Afterwards, well be heading to Ice Cream (as usual) to round the night off nicely.
Also, well be holding an EGM next Thursday to vote in a new mens officer and to vote on any constitutional amendments. Both sets of proposals will be posted on the forum shortly.
Dont forget about BLACKPOOL! People need to get their money in, and book a spot. Itll be a super top event. Its £50 for 2 nights accommodation, small breakfast, transport and drinks deals in the local bars. Ace.
Many of you will have been following the drama on the forum. All the issues raised will be discussed at the next committee meeting that, as usual, are open to all members to observe. The time and date of the next one will be on the forum, when a room is booked.
Word of the week stress. Yes, Im sure many of you are feeling the strain of uni/societies/social life right now. Boooo. I just want Christmas fun.
Firstly, we have an EGM this Thursday at 6pm in the Conference Hall in the ARC. The actual meeting will start at 6.30pm, to give all of you at lectures chance to get there. Well be voting on constitutional amendments and on the election of the new mens officer. Check the forum (www.leedslgbt.activeboard.com) for the proposals. Come along, and then afterwards folks will no doubt head to the Old Bar before heading to Mission for a boogie.
Also, this weekend is BLACKPOOL! Get your money in for tickets. Attached is a PowerPoint presentation, convincing the rest of you to go. Itll be a fun packed weekend, at a bargain price of £50. Bring your housemates and course mates... and have a fun fun fun time.
Next Tuesday is another debate the postponed topic of cottaging. This house would legalise cottaging/dogging in certain areas. If youd like to get involved, let a committee member know at coffee hour and well form the teams.
The 28th November is Curious! Watch this space for more details on our very own club night.
Coming soon to coffee hours the Welfare Box. It will contain many resources organised by the welfare team and available to the members during coffee hour. More details next week.
Speaking on welfare the dental dams are still going to be on sale at 50p for two. Buy one get one free! This charge is only until we find a cheaper supply. We are still selling them at a loss, it is just to help cover the cost.
Thats all!
The word of the week is lights Leeds lights and of course BLACKPOOL LIGHTS!
Jeni. Xxx
(An advert for Buy Nothing Day follows)
Hi everyone,
You may have heard about a wondrous and exciting event happening on Saturday 24th November at The Packhorse Pub from 3-11pm...
It's a FREE all-day ethical festival of music and a smattering of performance poetry all in aid of a curious international celebration: Buy Nothing Day. The fundamental idea is not to BUY anything for 24 hours and promise to shop ethically in the future but we have been a little attention-seeking/downright cheeky and held it in a pub. So if you purchase yourself a drink or 8 I'll promise not to notice...
There will be, from 3pm:
-Free entry! (but donations go to The Common Place, a v.necessary social space in Leeds and home to the legendary 'Suck My Left One' night)
-Free love! Well, around 10 bands/artists performing including Dani's fabtastic band 'Tiny Tin Lady' and Liz's amazing pop/electronic duo 'Idiometric'.
So basically it's an all-day party with a conscience, free food and people you know making music. What's not to love?
Just bring 50p or so for The Common Place collection :)
Just a quickie the E.G.M tomorrow has had a room change. So well meet in the Union foyer (near the postboxes) at 6pm, and then head onto the new room. Its now in the Parkinson basement, room 108, if you want to head there yourselves.
Hope to see you all tomorrow! And check out the proposals on the General section of the forum.

Okay, thats all.
Word of the week Spatula. A word that should be Yiddish, but isnt.
Hope everyone had fun last night at the debate and then Blasphemy. For those that have missed the buzz about Blasphemy, its a new ace gay night held at Religion in town. Wooo.
This Saturday is our crimbo meal! Its £15.95 for 3 courses of yummy Xibit food, followed by FREE entry into QC (which would normally cost about £4). Plus, the drinks at Xibit will be at the marvellous happy hour prices. Come along, eat, drink and be merry. Come to Xibit for about 5pm, and the meal will be at 6pm to give you all enough time to digest before the dancing starts.
Then, next Wednesday is CURIOUS! Our termly club night run by us! Exciting. The Violator boys will be DJing again (woo) and theyll be playing a nice eclectic mixture cheese, alternative, top 40, RnB etc etc. Its at Mook, £4 entry (and well also be running a cloakroom) and starts at 8.30pm . This is an event specifically aimed at the members, and is always super super fun. Plus, at Mook you can buy sexy sexy ****tails.
This Saturday is World Aids Day. So coffee hour on Monday will be themed, woo! Come along, wear red, eat red cakes (yes, people will be baking this weekend) bring along some red cakes, etc etc.

And finally, check the forum this weekend for the constitutional amendments and Bi Officer manifestos being put forward for an EGM being held next term.
Word(s) of the week Final Fantasy such a great game, and such a great musician.
Hello folks! Hope you all had an ace ace Christmas and New Year! I hope your days were filled with Dr.Who and chocolate and turkey (or tofu)
But sadly, we are now into the exam period.
So! To make this sad sad sad time a little brighter, were running coffee hour this week and next. 12-2 upstairs in the ARC in the Union. Come. Bring your revision, and your stressed out brains, have a relax or just sit in the corner rocking slightly. Whatever you fancy really!
Then next Friday 18th January were having an end of exams trip to Manchester. Well meet at 7ish, and then head off to the greatest area of the UK (the north west) to have a boogie and give our brains a chance to stay in Leeds. More details next week.
So thats it! Short and sweet. Stop watching Hollyoaks and revise you lot!
Person of the Month Zac Efron. Ive finally spread the High School Musical love to a few resistant people and the world is a happy place.
Hope your exams are going well! And if youve finished already stop rubbing it in!!
Firstly, its the fantastic Manchester Trip on Friday. Meet at Leeds train station at 8pm for the 8.40pm train and well be in Manchester for about 9.40pm. Then be prepared for some fun fun Manchester fun down Canal Street etc. The last trains back are at 1.48am and 3.38am. Have fun!
Were having a film night on the 28th January. Film and venue tbc.
February is LGBT History Month, so there are plenty of fun things to get involved with! Were holding another Awareness Fair on the 8th February to kick things off, and this one will be bigger and better than the last one, which was very successful! Were holding an art event on the 17th February. Woo! There will be bands, karaoke and lots of lovely artwork by you guys. If you were here last year, youll know how successful the idea was (well done last years committee) so I hope you will all get involved! There will be an extended coffee hour next Wednesday to get creative in. No matter what skill level you are! And lastly were having an Otley Run on the 29th February. As this is now a leap year, the theme will be a leaping/jumping theme. Think outside the box!
Thats all folks, Jeni. Xx
Word of the week refuse! Its an ambiguous word. Confusing on signs.
Exams are over and now there is nothing to do except to read this long long long email.
The Manchester trip was a great success! I hope everyone that went had an ace time and there have been many people asking for another one. Good-o.
There is just one event this week, and its a film night at Matt, Jenny and James house again. Meeting at 8pm in the Union to then wander down to their place to watch a film, which will be selected soon.
Right, now the important stuff!
Next month is LGBT History month, and weve joined up with The assembly to create a whole host of events.
7th YMNM gig at the ****pit (who are having a queer band play every Thursday in February) 8th Peter Tatchell is coming to the Uni to talk. 5pm in Parkinson B.08 8th 13th Hyde Park Picture House are running Screening Queens. The title may be awful, but were hoping that theyll show some good films over those few days. 15th The Awareness Day. All day in the Union (the job link bit, with the purple couches. Sorry the date has been changed! 17th The arty event. Expect to be bombarded with felt tip pens and papier mache over the next few weeks. Were also having an extended coffee hour soon (not this week!). 18th LGBT Assembly sex event. 21st Trans workshop. 5pm Meeting Room 8. 27th I predict a riot. 29th Otley Run. Leaping/jumping theme.
Okay. These are just brief descriptions. The forum has been spring cleaned and reorganised, and there is a specific place full of the info about LGBT History month now. http://leedslgbt.activeboard.com. Also on the forum are some requests from V. Firstly, if anyone has any questions fro Peter Tatchell pop them on the relevant thread. And secondly, she is writing an article on coming out for the paper, and so would like some personal perspectives. You can either pop them on the forum, or remain anonymous by sending them to leedsstudentfeatures@gmail.com.
Now, just a quick thing. No more smoking out of the windows at coffee hour! You lot have to go outside, even if its chucking it down! Mkay?
Thats it.
Word of the week Barbara Cartland. She just keeps cropping up. Even in Classics lectures.
Another week, another email. But this one is the first email in LGBT HISTORY MONTH! Woo. Its busy busy busy!
Firstly, as many of you may know Hani has organised a lads night out tonight to the Brazilian night at the Fav. Of course everyone is welcome, and I know of a few ladies making an appearance. So yes, 9pm at the Terrace in the union, and then on to the Faversham (£5ish entry).
A quick message from Blasphemy: The next BLASPHEMY at RELIGION is on WEDNESDAY 6TH FEBRUARY. It's a pretty special one because it's the VALENTINE'S PARTY so they'll be tagging people 'single' or 'taken' to make the pulling process even easier! There'll also be a texting service set up too. The full info is in the Events section of the forum.
Thursday is the usual shebang at Ice Cream, but it is the first one of their Winter Pride nights, and so our very own Yes Miss No Miss will be playing!
Friday 8th is the Peter Tatchell event. Check out the facebook link from previous emails, for more info. Its in room B.08 in the Parkinson Building and starts at 5pm. Afterwards people will be heading to the Old Bar followed by the ace ace New Penny.
Plus!! Friday 8th is the extended coffee hour so get arty!
Oh! And Friday 8th is the first day of Hyde Park Picture Houses Screening Queens.
Thursday 14th is St. Valentines Day. So, there is going to be a very exciting FlashMob thing (event?). Anyway. At 1.10pm outside the union there will be a sign (the release of balloons perhaps) and at that moment everyone is going to kiss! Singledom is no excuse! Find yourself a partner and get smooching.
Friday 15th is the awareness day, as you are fully aware (hahaha ha). Featuring special guests from the GUM clinic, and hopefully Beers Bakes again. There will be many other things going on all day, in the union so come along!
Plus! The art event has been moved due to venue things to the Monday 18th. So you have one extra day to be creative.
The events later on in the month will be in later emails. Plus you can always check the forum, or the LGBT office door.
Okay, Friday 15th February is the deadline for the photography competeition. More information from James about it is on the forum! You should all enter for a chance of winning the mystery prize.
And a very important piece of info the AGM is going to be on 5th March. Its been officially announced. Following the AGM well hold Curious. More details will be in next weeks email. But the important thing right now is the AGM. If you want to run for a committee position next year then manifestos have to be in by 27th February. Also, you can put forward any constitutional amendments you may have. If youre unsure of the positions on the committee check the website, and also we have the new position of Bisexual Officer.
Okay.
Word of the week kedgeree. Fun to say. Scary to make. Especially when the fish still have their heads on.
Basically, Peter Tatchell isnt in Parkinson B.08 it is in room 1.08. Just above it, and its bigger. Woo. So there will be plenty of space for everyone to park their bums. 5pm tomorrow evening.
Plus, I think Ill take this opportunity to reiterate the fact that the AGM is on the 5th March and that your manifestos and constitutional amendments need to be in by 27th February. So get sorted!
Were sat in the middle of LGBT History Month. Thanks to everyone that have come to events so far. The FlashMob hug/kissing things was ace, as was the awareness fair on Friday. Congrats to Hannah B for being the fastest person in these parts at putting on a condom in a box. Well done!
Monday is the Arty Event or QUAP as it is now known. Come along, listen to the bands, look at the art. Bid on the art. This info is from the facebook group: For this year's Queer Arts Project the LGBT society bring you three fabulous bands including:
YES MISS NO MISS IDIOMETRIC TINY TIN LADY
plus other acts during the evening.
We will also be showing some of the art that the society has produced. Please contribute with anything interesting at all! Just give it to a committee member in coffee hour.
The aim of the project is to celebrate the huge creativity of the lgbt community.
Okay, so it starts at 8pm in Mine in the Union. Be there!
Thursday 21st is also the Trans workshop run by James. Its at 5pm in meeting room 8 in the ARC and will be really ace.
Plus, dont forget to get your manifestoes in. You have until the 27th February, because the AGM is on the 5th March (along with Curious!). The officers are chair, treasurer, secretary, mens, womens, trans, bisexual, international, events and communications. You can always jobshare, so if you and a mate fancy doing it together (hohoho) then go for it. Also, dont forget that if you have any constitutional amendments to get them in too. Send everything to this email address.
Manifestos for the committee need to be in by the 27th Feb. Thats this Wednesday! The roles are chair, treasurer, secretary, mens, womens, trans, bisexual, international, events and communications. Plus, any constitutional amendments should be in by then too. The AGM is on the 5th March, and is followed straight away by Curious.
Other than that, well see you on Friday for the Otley Run. 3pm at Woodies. The fancy dress theme is leaping/jumping, since its a leap year.
Oh, and someone needs our help. This is a plea to anyone who was in Leeds 2 years ago. Do you know a girl called Astrid? Weve been sent an email from a friend who has lost contact with her. If you do, let us know!
Word of the week: headache (caused by the awful music blaring into my room, from the neighbours. Blah)
Im sure youre all glad to see another email so soon.
Firstly, dont forget that its the Otley Run on Friday. 3pm at Woodies, then proceeding down the road, having a nice visit in the various public houses along the way. Heres my number, and Ill be there from 3pm so if you get lost on the way or whatever, or are running late and want to meet at the next pub, let us know 07727039015. Okay, so the theme is running/bouncing/leaping since its a wonderful leap year. So get your thinking caps on!!
Manifestos! Weve had a few more in, which is ace. But we still need more. Especially if we want a nice example of democracy. Otherwise RON may rear his ugly head. They need to be approximately 200 words, explaining why you want to run for a certain role, and what qualities youll bring. In the past, people have been known to offer to bring food and cakes to coffee hour if they get elected which is always welcome. So the committee positions again: Chair Secretary Treasurer Events Communications Mens Womens Trans International Bisexual
There are currently no manifestos in for International, Mens, Womens, Trans, Communications or Secretary.
They all need to be in by Wednesday. After then, theyll be printed out for coffee hours and placed on the forum for you all to look at and mull over. This is along with the constitutional amendments that also need to be in by Wednesday.
Also this Wednesday, there is a Socialist Worker Forum event on, with a gay rights campaigner Hannah Dee. Its called From Stonewall to Pride: The Struggle for LGBT Liberation Today and is this Wednesday 7-9pm, in the Baines Wing room 622.
Another Wednesday event is I Predict A Riot run by the lovely LGBT Assembly. A note from Sophia:
'On wednesday the LGBT Assembly and Lib Dems are doing an event called I PREDICT A RIOT, mine 9pm - 2am!
It's a clubnight with an eclectic mixture of beats from hip hop to indie electro and a bit of cheese featuring 2 live acts - Artibella & Faymmusic!
Should be a quality night. Tickets are being sold in info point today and tomorrow. £3 adv, £3.50 for charity
All proceeds from the event will be going to charities fighting homophobia in the UK and Iraq.
Thanks Sophia, LGBT Assembly Chair xxx'
Hokay, and finally the last event by this committee will be the AGM/Curious. Its on the 5th March (next Wednesday), and is in Mook. Basically, if you come to the AGM well stamp your hand or something along those lines when you get to Mook this will then entitle you to a free shot of Sambuca. Happy happy joy joy! Well be in the upstairs room, but the bar and the 2-for-1 offers are exactly the same as downstairs, so dont worry you can still buy your ****tails.
And thats that. This is one of the final emails from me. Lament lament! If I were a pop group, theyd be a greatest hits collection arriving soon.
Person of my life Liz Fuller. Accomplished presenter. Such wonders as, Quizcall, Numberplate Heaven and the upcoming film Sleeper (in which she plays the role News Reader).
Sorry for yet another email, but its a particular busy time of year you may have noticed all of the people trying to persuade you to vote for them in various things.
So, basically we as a society are endorsing 2 people in the upcoming Exec election things. First is Rowena Skinner who is running for Activities. She has a lovely facebook group with more info: http://leedsac.facebook.com/group.php?gid=8557196879
Secondly, its Hani, our own mens officer. Hes running for Welfare Exec, and here is his facebook group: http://leedsac.facebook.com/group.php?gid=10542648593
Okay, also Lev and Steven are running for NUS Conference Delegates.
Lev has written this short blurb for the email:
"Levent Akbulut Number 1 for NUS Conference Delegate! I have been a student activist for over five years campaigning against ID Cards, the War on Drugs and Student fees. I am also a strong supporter of Queer liberation and religious freedom. I am a supporter of Outrage! And I have been actively involved in campaigns with the LGBT assembly throughout the year. If sent to NUS Conference I will not reject the Governance Review, I will support any motion that aims to make Student Unions more inclusive for LGBT people, to be more environmentally friendly and for unions to show opposition to any curbs against our civil liberties by the government. I will also support Home fees for asylum seekers and support the right to asylum in the UK for all LGBT people fleeing persecution from countries prohibiting their lifestyles. If you support me put a number 1 by my name!"
And here is Steven Sharpes manifesto: DURING MY TIME ON DERBYSHIRE YOUTH FORUM I GALVANISED THE INFLUENCE OF YOUNG PEOPLE ON NATIONAL POLITICS. HELPING IT SHIFT FROM AN INEFFECTUAL POSITION TOWARDS A RESPECTED BODY THAT WOULD NOT TAKE LIP SERVICE AND DEMANDED TANGIBLE CHANGE AND ACTION. AS A COMMITTEE MEMBER FOR CLARENCE DOCK JCR, I HAVE REPRESENTED LUU MEMBERS OPINION AND HELPED RAISE CONCERNS WITH REGARDS TO THE CLOSING OF THE SITE SHOP. I HAVE GREAT FAITH IN THE POWER OF NUS, THE STUDENT VOICE AND STUDENT VOTE. I WILL PROUDLY, PASSIONATELY AND CHARISMATICALLY TAKE THE VOICE OF LUU TO CONFERENCE PLACE YOUR TRUST IN A PROACTIVE MEMBER OF LUU ENSURE THAT THERE FIRST YEAR REPRESENTATION PLACE YOUR TRUST IN STEVEN SHARPE NUS DELEGATE
Heres the uni website about all this stoof: http://www.luuonline.com/elections/candidatemanifestos.php
Anyway!! More importantly, its our very own AGM next Wednesday at 6.30 in the ARC. Manifestos have to be in today. Today!! We still have no one for Trans or International. Sad times. Pull your fingers out folks. Plus, if you havent already, could you just quickly email the society with who proposed and seconded you just to make it all official and lovely. Anyway, you still have time to send in your manifestos. Theyre going up on the forum tomorrow morning, and will be printed off and ready for coffee hour on Friday (unless I get a super early train back to Leeds tomorrow).
Speaking of which, I was in the epicentre of the earthquake yesterday! It was the funniest thing. The whole house shook so so much, and mine and Annes initial reaction was that it was our very own Cloverfield fun. Eek. Hope none of you were the unfortunate ones to get stuck under the fallen chimneys and what not. Jeni. Xxxxxxxx
This could perhaps be the last email from me! Now before your computer dies from all the tears that are falling into it, I have important info.
Its the AGM on Wednesday. Its in the Parkinson Building, room B108 (where I studied Ovid in first year, and also where the EGM was last time). Anyway, if youre unsure of where that is, or just like to be in the crowd, meet in the Union foyer at 6pm. The AGM is starting at 6.30pm sharp! Dont be late. Then youll hear some reports from the current committee about the year, followed by each candidate speaking for 2 minutes. If you havent read the manifestos, dont worry, people usually just read out a re-hash of their manifesto but if you have the guts and the skills, why not transform it into a naff poem. Each candidate will also be subjected to one minute of Paxo-style questioning.
The voting will then take place, by top secret ballot. The results will be announced, and youll all go off to the Old Bar. Curious starts at 10pm in Mook, and dont forget to claim your free sambuca once you produce proof that you were at the AGM. (Itll be a stamp or ticket or something probably).
Hokay. So, a couple of smaller things now.
If you fancy getting involved in some volunteer work, setting up LGBTs in colleges, then email here: geraldine.smith@nus.org.uk for an application form and the deadline is March 10th. Note, you must be free on the 27th March for a training day in London.
Plus, we are endorsing a whole cacophony of people. For conference delegates - Levent Akbulut and Steven Sharpe. For exec Hani (welfare) and Rowena (Activities)
Plus, we are also endorsing Matt Andrews for Leeds Student Editor. And since the others got a good plug last week, heres some info about Matt:
My name is Matt, Im running for editor of the Leeds Student. This year weve encluded a lot of LGBT-related topics and promoted society events in the features section I edit. I plan to increase this community feel if elected, so vote Matt for a paper that represents and promotes the interests of everyone, not just a select few
Good stuff. But if youre experiencing voter fatigue, dont fret. Just pick the manifestos with the best-bad puns and rhymes. It works. But this is my own personal opinion.
And finally, here is a message from Sophia:
Hey hey, Conference is happening soon!!! It's in Nottingham between the 25th - 27th April 2008. Here is the process for running!
The individuals will be required to submit a manifesto explaining what the have done, why they want to go, how it will benefit them and what they will bring back to the Union and the LGBT group in particular and how this will be utilised in future. Candidates must self define as LGBT. There are 4 delegation places, although LUU gives Assembly chairs with links to NUS liberation campaigns an automatic place at conference, despite this, i will be explaining my reasons for going, all the same. Of the remaining places there is one for anyone who defines specifically as a woman (only self defining women can vote in this) and another which is open.
Manifestoes will be read out anonymously and voted on via means of private ballot. The deadline for submission is midday on 10th March and the meeting (The General Meeting i spose) will be at 5pm on the same day.
Remember that as delegates you are representing all the LGBT individuals at Leeds University! Preferably you will have done some LGBT work at this Uni or elsewhere.
Cool cool, good luck and i hope you all decide to run. just email, fb or hand me those manifestoes and get on it friends
*******************************************
SOCIAL!!!
A celebration for an excellent history month, we're going to have a social after at the old bar, everyone is welcome!!!
Okay. Farewell!
Word of the week Lazanki. Claims to be the Polish lasagne. But is just cabbage, bacon and pasta. Still tasty though.
It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life and we're feeling good.
As of the AGM a few weeks ago a new LGBT committee is in town. Exciting times. We are as follows:
Chair: Levent Akbulut Co-secretaries: Caz Swanson & Lauren Hunt Treasurer: Mark Wingham Men's Officer: Sam Cullum, but will also respond to Messiah Women's Officer: Liz Grashoff Bi Officer: The ever-pink Caz Goodwin Events Officer: Matt Edwards International Officer: Lauren Caveney Communications Officer: Myself, Stu Forward.
If you have the urge to stalk any of us, find incriminating photos or just to put a name to a face, check out the Leeds LGBT facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2202528235
Despite all this change, SAD times are upon us as we are yet to receive an application to be Trans Officer. This really is vital. If you feel like you're made for the post or are just plain intrigued, send in a manifesto aroundabout 200 words by the 14th of April and we will hold the EGM on Thursday the 17th April to respond to this. After this EGM, everyone is invited to experience a bit of PMS (Pre Mission Social) and welcoming the Trans officer in the Old Bar from where people will head off to Ice Cream or Mission.
Along with this, we're in search of a new logo for the society to go on membership cards, posters, the works. Create something simple yet memorable, in jpeg form and send it to the society email. It will be voted on at the EGM and the winner will get a mystery prize! In true Saturday night style, the winning entry will get whatever is inside the mystery box, which COULD be a cash prize and free membership or could just as easily be a Brillo pad and a Dental Dam. Who knows?
The coming semester is set to be an exciting one. AGENDA kicks us off, with a debate style discussion of sexuality and religion, on April 22nd 5 til 8, with speakers and opinions from in and outside of the society. Other events in the works include a sports day, the much lusted-over DIGGERLAND, the Summer Ball and the tantalizing prospect of Amsterdam. Details will follow in due course, so watch this space. The future looks orange.
As a quick sidenote, our chair Lev invites you to the protest in London on Sat March 22nd outside Downing Street concerning the deportation of Mehdi Kazemi whose sexuality would sentence him to execution if returned to Iran. For those of you who are interested in going, Lev's email is chm4la@leeds.ac.uk and number is 07815500336.
Sweet. Other than that, we wish you a very sexy Easter full of creme eggs and wonder.

Quote of the day: "I did it the old fashioned way... Laxatives and smokes"
-- Leeds University Union LGBT Society e: luu.lgbt@leeds.ac.uk w: www.leeds.ac.uk/union/socs/lgb
The holidays are nearly over, alas, which means that next Monday is the start of the 3rd semester and with that the official start to the new LGBT committee. Exciting times ahead.
To kick off the term before the stress of deadlines, exams and the blitz of goodbye Otley runs, weve put together the spectacularspectacular that is The Queer Games! No doubt by now the excesses of Easter eggs and downright abuse of 4od have lovingly laden themselves upon your hips, but never fear, the Queers are here. Come along to the games in Hyde Park on Saturday the 19th and burn it all off with our egg and spoon, leaky cup, three legged, under n over, and sack races as well as games of 5-a-side football and a game of rounders. Itll be fun. Prizes will be given and if you dont feel like racing, feel free to come along and support the troops. Well be meeting by the statue next to the Library pub at 12 o clock before heading off to sport it up. There will be a social afterwards too.
Also, on that same Saturday a little bird told the society about Leeds first DIY queer electro clubnight launching upstairs in the library pub. For all those interested, its called Cursive. Free entry before 11. Sounds like a sweet night. Heres the flyer: https://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f275/pawp/cursivetigerpinkpurple-2.jpg
The start of the semester will be a busy time for the society with the EGM taking place on Thursday the 17th. Come along and vote upon the election of a Trans officer, the new LGBT logo and any other business which pops up along the way. Manifestos, constitutional amendments and logo designs need to be sent in by Monday the 14th, so get your skates on. The Trans officer role is such a vital one in the society, so if you are interested or just contemplating, send in a manifesto and see what happens. Were also looking for a new logo to put on membership cards, posters and just use as a face for the society, so get your creative hats in gear and send a design in, with the winner receiving a mystery prize. Suspense. The EGM will send everyone into a rage of PMS no doubt, so well be gathering afterwards for a Pre Mission Social SLASH Ice Cream, whichever floats your boat, before heading on down for a night out. On top of all this, AGENDA will be engaging our intellectual sides on Tuesday the 22nd, as students from both in and outside of the society discuss the relationship between sexuality and an individuals religion. With speakers talking on a variety of religions and their experiences, its set to be an intriguing event to say the least. If youre interested in sharing an opinion or want to get involved, then talk to our chair Lev. Fun times.
Finally! Topping off the academic year in a blaze of glitter and drunken mistakes, the LGBT Summer Ball has been confirmed. Its scheduled for Monday the 5th of May, before the exam rush, at the Crowne Point Plaza. It was planned with an eye to give everyone one last knees up with a sexy crowd in smart dress, before the heavy exam load started up. So hopefully people can make it! Tickets are looking at costing around £30 each, but with that comes the venue, meal and some sexy dj beats to move to. Itll be a night not to miss, with tickets coming out soon.
Rooms for the EGM and AGENDA will be pimped out to you all as soon as theyve been confirmed. Coffee hour will be taking place as normal from 12 to 2 upstairs in the arc, with the new committee taking the coffee making helm.
Other than that, have a good remainder of the holiday and savour those last few moments before that guilt over mistimed essays and seminar-missing hangovers comes back to haunt you.
Sweet. See you all soon.
Stu x
Quote of the day: We should have each other with cream.
DISCLAIMER: I didn't mean to send it to people ten times... I blame the government.
Hopefully by now, through sheer naggage you will know about the EGM happening this Thursday. The venue for this has been confirmed as the Lounge, that corner of the world which no one really goes to, but has comfy chairs, downstairs in the union next to Mine. It'll be kicking off at 5.30 and will decide upon the Trans officer and we'll vote upon the logos as well as any other business. Time is running out! Alas. So get your creative hats on and send in a design for the logo assoonaspossible! The winning submission will win a MYSTERY but actually quite considerable and amazing prize and will have their logo used as the Lgbt's from now on! Exciting times. Also, Trans Officer manifestos MUST be sent in as soon as physically possible, get your arses into gear and please consider it!
Just to rehash some old gash, The Queer Games is coming to Leeds this Saturday. We've sent Lev out with the mission to find eggs, balloons and potato sacks, so it has the makings of quite an epic day. Depending on the weather there may well be a small bbq involved at some point, but who knows! Meet at 12 noon by the statue next to the library pub in Hyde Park and it'll go from there. Prizes and certificates will be issued to those truly amazing with an egg and spoon and if nothing else, it's a good excuse to strap on the lycra for those of you that way inclined...Sam. So come along! It's shaping up to be awesome.
The room has been signed, sealed, delivered for AGENDA on Tuesday the 22nd, so come along to the conference hall upstairs in the arc at 5pm. There has been quite a lot of interest in this event from both in and outside of the society, so there'll undoubtedly be interesting debate taking place and new faces. The whole event focuses upon the relationship of faith and spirituality with lgbt individuals. With speakers from all varieties of religion putting their opinion forward, it's undoubtedly going to be a hot pot of discussion and intrigue, so definitely consider coming.
Finally! The exciting news about the Summer Ball, May 5th. Tickets are now on sale! They cost £30, but for that you get to bask in the Crowne Point Plaza, have a free welcome drink, eat a snazzy meal, have half a bottle of wine each, YES, HALF A BOTTLE, already on your table and just dance the night away amongst beautiful people. What more could you want? The Djs have been booked, the menu has been set, with vegetarian options for all you veggies out there and the LGBT award categories have been decided, so all that's left is for you to buy a ticket. It would be great if people could buy them as soon as possible as we'll need to know numbers pretty soon in case we need their bigger room. So get buying! Our events comrade Matt Edwards has the tickets, so ideally talk to him or another committee member and the rest will be history.
Just to finish, coffee hour is continuing as normal this week, but the room arrangements are a bit iffy for these 2 initial weeks. To avoid headless-chickenlike wandering about the arc wondering "where the **** have they hidden coffee hour?!!", here are the rooms for this week:
TUESDAY 15th: Meeting Room 2 WEDNESDAY 16th: Meeting Room 7 (that pokey little room off of the Lounge downstairs by Mine) THURSDAY 17th: Conference hall upstairs in Arc FRIDAY 18th: Conference Hall upstairs in Arc
That's about it. Shine on you crazy diamonds.
Stu xQuote of the day: "Fish can be very decisive"
Apologies for the late night, XXX nature of this email past midnight. A combination of chinese meat and webmail spasms somewhat delayed it.
As of the EGM of Thursday we're proud to present Jacob Mirzaian as the new Trans Officer. The future looks bright. Also, as of the EGM, the society has adopted a new logo submitted by Lauren Caveney who won the quite -fabulous- prize of £5, free entry to Curious and all events next year, free membership and a t shirt with the logo on. It pays to go gay. *drum roll* Voila.
Cheers also to all those who came to the Queer Games on Saturday. Despite the clouds hideously looming overhead and the quite hideously hungover state of -someone- it was a good success. The stereotype of lesbian footballing chic was firmly cemented as a team lead by the ever-muddy Sophia, Lauren C and Sita beat the boys. I blame my footwear. There were also games of rounders, eggs and spoons, sacks and 3 legs. Funtimes. Watch this space for another sports events in the sun, when there won't be quite so many puddles for Phi to fall into.
In other news!
AGENDA, the Lgbt organised faith and spirituality debate will be taking place later today (Tuesday) at 5 o clock! Speakers have been prompted and everything is go. It's set to be a very interesting and engaging talk as students from in and outside of the Lgbt discuss their connection between spirituality and their sexuality. Speakers representing Atheism, Judaism, denominations of Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Wicca and Hinduism will be offering their views. Priceless. Come to the Conference room upstairs in the Arc at 5pm and have a listen. If speakers could make their way there half an hour early, for Lev's amazing-spectacular pep talk, that would be great.
SUMMER BALL! Alas, time to get tickets is running out. We need to give the Crowne Point Plaza final numbers and deposits as soon as possible. Try and speak to Matt our events officer or any committee member asap, asap, asap, and buy your ticket. Tickets are £30 for which you get a meal with a vegetarian alternative, sexy djs, the chance to win a Lgbt award...(biggest slag, cutest couple, most dykey etc.) AND a welcome drink AND half a bottle of wine free on your table per person. Cashback. Barring dissertations, avalanches or plagues, there's no real reason to miss it, guaranteed to be the most dazzling, traumatic event of the year.
Finally, we'll be showing Stonewall, quite an epic historical-gay-comedy... or something like that, as a break from exams and revision on Tuesday april 29th at 5.30, Parkinson B.10. Ask Lev. Sweet.
I'm now going to collapse. Until next time. Stu x
Quote of the day: "C'mon Super Hans, let's get you some crack"
Just a quickie really. For what seems like the hundredth time of pure nagging, LGBT SUMMER BALL! Excitement. Tomorrow is officially the last day to buy your ticket, so get with it. Tickets are £30 which is a small price really for the glitter, jazz hands and drama which will no doubt ensue. That covers the meal, venue, djs, welcome drink, decorations, HALF A BOTTLE OF WINE and all other gaiety. We also have quite a large contingent from York Uni Lgbt coming along, so it'll no doubt be a great event. They'll be on sale in coffee hour tomorrow, at the Stonewall showing and wherever you manage to pin down Matt our events officer. Last chance saloon.
So that people don't get too stressed and on edge over exam period, we'll be holding a showing of Stonewall this Tuesday (at 5.30. It's a historical comedy about the lead up to the Stonewall riots, and for what it's worth, it has a very sexy dvd cover. Just before this showing, at 5 there'll be an assembly meeting held by the newly elected Bi representative for the NUS Lgbt committee, Sophia. It'll be a quick meeting giving details on the planned protest against the blood ban which will be covered by the Leeds Student. Ask Lev for details!
Apart from shamelessly promoting The Scribe poetry magazine, on sale now for a mere £3, there's not much more to be said!
Until next time. Stu x
Quote of the day: "He walks up to the closet, He comes up to the closet, Now he's at the closet, Damn he's opening the closet..."
The ball is just a few hours away, so bring out your gladrags, straighten your hair and just dance really. The welcome drinks reception starts at 7 with people taking their seats for the meal at 7.45, so turn up anytime between then at the Crowne Point Plaza hotel. It's set to be a good night, glittery.
Coffee hour will resume tomorrow, going on until the end of May, so come along and gossip about the king and queen of the ball and look on in wonder at the biggest slag. Funtimes. If you'll be sweating it away in the library during the next few weeks, reading some ridiculous book which you'd rather just burn, come along to coffee, 12-2, and destress a bit. All coffees for the foreseeable future will be upstairs in the arc, APART FROM tomorrow's (Tuesday the 6th) which'll be in one of those scummy rooms off of the lounge, but alas!
Just a quick heads-up to keep Monday the 2nd of June free as we'll be seeing out the year and sending off all the leaving queers in a shower of dazzle and Otley run-ness. Bet your bottom dollar that more details will come nearer the time, so watch this space.
That's about it! See lots of you tonight!

Quote of the Day: "People will point at my loins and say job well done"
This may well be the last email you get this term. So to avoid heartache and that -what'smissingfrommylife- feeling at the start of the new year, be sure to sign up to the society at the Freshers fayre. We'll have a stall. We'll have free condoms. Hell, we'll even be smiling. So don't forget to sign up, which'll get you put on the mailing list and all the perks which come with it.
To see off this year with a bit of a bang we'll be holding an Otley run on Monday June the 2nd. The theme is "characters" which is flexible enough to allow all you literary wannabes to dress up as some obscure Woolf character, whilst letting everyone else dress up as bananaman. It's sure to be fun. If you're still in Leeds, then we'll be meeting at Woodies at half 3 and it will all unfold from there. On the route we'll be stopping off at the Fierce event that Leeds Met LGBT will be holding in Mine Bar. Fierce is an art event aimed to embrace creativity and I'm sure it'll be enjoyable after a few pints. The more hardcore of you who make it to the end of the Otley run may well want to make your way to a club, which may well be Queens Court or whatever takes people's fancy.
One of the more exciting plans for next year is the Queer zine which is being spearheaded by James Wilcox. It's aimed to be an alternative, something different and queer orientated. James will be holding a gathering for this in coffee hour on Wednesday where names, articles and general angst will be discussed in regards to the magazine. If you want to be involved or are just semi interested in contributing then come along.
Which leads me onto my next point nicely! Coffee hour will be continuing upto this Friday, so make sure you come along and have one last chat before the Summer break. With all the gay coffee withdrawal symptoms forecast over the Summer period, you'll be glad to know that coffee hour will be resurrected at the start of International week next term and then continue on as normal.
As part of the get-up for freshers week we're currently putting together a booklet with all the ins and outs of leeds, welfare and the lgbt. As a thought, if any members would like to advertise their band or any other project in this booklet (which will be colourful and jazzed up) then get in touch with the committee via the email and we'll discuss costs. We'd ideally love to advertise anything vaguely queer which would enhance the enjoyability of the year for both members and freshers, so get in touch!
This week also marks the epic change of the website. I've reinvigorated a previous format with sparkles and love, and hopefully it'll be kept uptodate. Keep an eye on it over freshers week and beyond to see what events we have planned and just generally keep in the cycle. As part of this trial site there's also a tiny pictures section of past events. If anybody has an issue with being pictured in this reply to the email saying "NO!" or something equally dramatic and I'll remove the picture. Go have a perv at the website at: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/union/socs/lgb/ p.s. big thanks to Rich Young
Over the Summer break there are a few things going on which you might like to know about. The Uni of Sheffield have invited us to their "Gemini" bbq on the 7th of June. It sounds quite sweet. Gemini "will include a BBQ during the evening and then progressing into a night of dancing with the best tunes and DJ's in South Yorkshire." (Obviously not as good as West Yorkshire, but still). Tickets will cost £4 in advance and the night promises to be quite good. If anyone is interested in going and extending their reach to Sheffield, reply to us and we'll give you more details and perhaps organise a mass trip if there is enough interest. ALSO at the start of June, we've been informed of a theatre production of DV8's To Be Straight With You. This will be showing at the West Yorkshire Playhouse from the 4th to the 7th of June and will look at sexuality, religion and culture. However gay that sounds, I'm sure it would be worth a trip. Here's the flyer: http://www.dekretser.com/emailers/dv8/leeds.html
Lev will also be organising a mass outing to Leeds Pride on the 3rd of August. Unfortunately it falls the same day as the epic Brighton Pride, but for all you priders who feel like something different away from the bright lights and sights of Brighton, be sure to stay in touch over the Summer for Pride related activities.
Deep breath. That's about it! For all those still experiencing the sleepless nights concerned with exam prep, good luck! For all those done with Uni life for this year, enjoy the next week or so in a purely hedonistic way. It has been an amazing year for all involved with the society. In the short time that the current committee have been in office great times have been had by all and the next year seems to be ever busier, ever greater. With the promise of your own monthly club night at the Union, Smash the Closet, the ever eventful PMS sessions, the recurring Queer Games, Film Nights, Trips, Debates, Drama, Sex Workshops, Trips to Amsterdam and who knows what else, how can you resist getting involved next year? We'll be running a mass of Freshers events and hope that members will stay interested and all those members who haven't truly been involved this year come and give the new committee a test run and see what we can do for you. To all those members leaving us for lands far afield or Hull, after the end of their courses or years abroad, we wish you the best of luck and thanks for an amazing year. We've had the good, the bad and the ugly. From weaves to podium dancing, we've had it all and hopefully you've enjoyed it. Lev sends his love to you all. Turkish delight all round. So cheers, see you next year!

So perhaps I told a little lie when I said there wouldn't be another email before September. My bad.
Just a quick little note to say "DIGGERLAND".
http://www.diggerland.com/ Listen to the song as you read this and you'll automatically feel amazing and full of jcb wonder.
On Thursday the 3rd of July we'll be donning our hard hats and having a gayday out to Diggerland. Hopefully most people will have moved in or at least be in Leeds around this day as housing usually starts from the 1st. So, if you're bored, sat in a new house and thinking "I feel like digging something up" there really is no excuse not to come! Diggerland is in Castleford which is a little drive away or just £5 by train or if there's enough interest we can look into getting a minibus together. To get into Diggerland it will cost £13.50 but when you weigh up that against the hundreds of pounds spent on petrol/buses and NOT in a jcb over the past year, it's quite good for a day out.
If you are interested email our events officer Matt asap at matthewedwards1987@yahoo.co.uk or text him on 07825 828 022.
If you're not in Leeds at this time but would like to come to Diggerland at some point, never fear as Matt may well be dusting off his hard helmet and organising another one sometime next year depending on how this one comes off.
That's about it! Stay tuned for news on Leeds/Brighton/London Pride and everything we'll have going on in connection with that. Have a sweet summer!

Quote of the day: "Badgers do not suck! They bite."
It's that time of the year again where the sun is glowing, the drink is flowing and Pride is growing.
All of you living in Leeds over the Summer and those of you looking for a good excuse to get back and rave it up a little bit will be glad to hear that Leeds Pride is this Sunday. This Sunday! The 3rd of August.
The celebrations kick off at noon in Millennium square with a large stage showcasing local talent and funtimes. The magic of 'Jesus and The Felch Monkeys' will be kicking it, as well as the Fame Shirley Bassey Experience, oh lord. Lots will be going on in Millennium square at that time if the prospect of felching monkeys hasn't already secured the deal.
Leeds Uni LGBT will also be marching in the parade which kicks off at 2. It's bound to be memorable. If you want to get involved in this, just turn up in Millennium Square at some point prior to 2 and I'm sure you'll see Lev, our chair. Or alternatively, get in contact beforehand.
Religion will also be playing host to 'Blasphemy vs Hoochy Coochy' with djs and vibes from the 2 different gay nights in Leeds sharing a venue. This goes on from noon on Sunday until 4am Monday morn and promises scandal.
Finally, this year's pride is aiming to break a world record. Wait for it. There will be a world record attempt to have the most drag queens dancing in a chorus line at one time. Amazing.
More info can be found at the official website: http://www.leedspride.com/
Last year drew in 12,000 people and the organisers are estimating a much larger turn out this time around. Good times.
That's about it! Enjoy the rest of your Summer and condolences when you truly realise the extent of next year's reading list. Stu x

It seems that in my sundrenched glee yesterday, I forgot to mention the Pride Picnic and Sports Day which will be taking place this Saturday. Yes, this Saturday, the 2nd.
As part of Pride this year, the queer of Leeds will be descending on Hyde Park to have a little something before the main events of Sunday.
It kicks off at 1pm somewhere in Hyde Park...I'm sure if you follow your nose you'll find them. The Sports Day is run by a chap called Ali and his Yorkshire Terriers, the local LGB football team.
For all those of you who remember the epic Queer Games that we hosted a few months ago and the amount of times Phi fell over, the set up looks much the same. All the classics of egg and spoon, sack races and 5 aside football as well as a few other gems will be on the cards but with a much wider group this time. If you have a spare few hours and want to enter a team or just find watching the whole thing rather comical, you'll be more than welcome.
The whole event takes place from 1 till 4 but is bound to be a relaxed, fun atmosphere and a nice excuse to just chill in the park. Give it a go if you're about.
Cheers. Stu x
