NUS Conference Elections

You may remember from the last LGBT email sent round that there is a conference coming up in late November – and YOU have got the chance of representing the LGBT people in this union and deciding on the policies of the campaign. It is also a great chance to make links with and meet people from LGBT’s all across the country. All expenses are paid for (apart from drinking costs).

This year it is in Lecister.

Because there is usually quite a bit of interest in this event, we hold elections for potential delegates so that we get the people the LGBT students want to represent you.

To be eligible to stand you MUST

1.Be free 26th – 28th of November, including all Friday day time (for travel purposes)
2.Identify as Lesbian, Gay or Bisexual – or for our purposes Transgender too.
3.Be willing to take part in all conference events which take place all Friday afternoon, all Saturday day and most of Sunday
4. be an ordinary member of the union

If you want to stand, please write a short manifesto of about 150 – 200 words explaining why you’d like to go (if you need help with this, came and speak to the committee at coffee hour this week and we can give you a hand). This manifesto must be handed in to the society via email by Thursday 28th of October at 6pm. This is when the manifestos will be compiled, ballot forms will be produced and copies of your manifesto sent to all society members.

Copies of your manifesto will also be made available at coffee hour on Friday 29th, Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd of November.

Voting takes place on Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd of November. To vote, go to the ARC reception, ask to vote for the Conference Elections and fill in the ballot form. You will be asked to put in order of preference who you would like to go. (eg. If there are 8 candidates you can vote in 4 – 8 people in order of whom you’d like to see go).

If you aren’t standing PLLLEEEEAAAASSSSEEEE VOTE! This is your chance to directly affect what happens in YOUR union!

To vote, you MUST

1.Identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender
2.Be a student and have with you your student card (you will be asked for your student ID number to protect against multiple voting)

Votes will be compiled and verified by non-standing members of the committee. The results will be published in full no later than Thursday Friday 5th November 2004.

If it happens that there are four or less people standing for election, the election will not take place and those four people will automatically be elected and will go to conference. Because of this I urge as many of you as possible to stand.

Any questions at all about Conference, email us at luu.lgbt@leeds.ac.uk

Any further information regarding the actual conference itself can be found at www.nusonline.com/lgb

Sorry that was a bit long, but it was important!

PS Manifestos will be published in a locked and stickyed thread in here! So come read them!

You have 2 hours to get your manifestos in. If there aren't enough manifestos to carry out a vote, those four people will automatically be voted into the delegation.

We have only recieved 2 manifestos. Please, if you want to come, let us know ASAP!

In the end four people wanted to attend conference so they have been automatically elected. They are

Emily
Dave
Joe
John K

As soon as pre-conference motions documents come through we will be able to make them available at coffee hour for us to look at and talk through. We can add our support / disapproval of the motion as appropriate
