As I have traveled around the country these past twelve months, what I sensed in my heart has been confirmed America is embracing its LGBT sons and daughters with an acceptance and understanding as never before. On the campaign trail, a father of a gay son will ask about ending Dont Ask, Dont Tell. A woman will ask why she can be discriminated against just because of who she is. Sometimes they wait furtively for the crowd to thin and then whisper their confidences in a soft voice and sometimes they stand up proudly at town meetings and want me to share my views on how I will help lead the change to assure that this country fulfills its promise to everyone.
Let me tell you what I have been telling voters across America. I am fully committed to the fair and equal treatment of LGBT Americans. For seven long years, the Bush Administration has tried to divide us - only seeing people who matter to them. It's been a government of the few, by the few, and for the few. And no community has been more invisible to this administration than the LGBT community.
I will change that. The best evidence of what I will do as President is what I have already done.
* I am proud of my record as First Lady, as a U.S. Senator and as a candidate for President in working toward the fair and equal treatment of LGBT Americans. * I am proud that as Chair of the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee in 2006, I worked closely with LBGT community to develop a smart strategy that defeated the Federal Marriage Amendment. I am proud of fighting the FMA as divisive wedge politics at its worst. * I am proud to be a co-sponsor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, the Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, and the Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligation Act which would grant the same benefits (including health insurance) to domestic partners of federal employees that are currently offered to employees legal spouses. * I am proud to have authored the Early Treatment for HIV Act, which expands access to vital treatment options for low-income individuals living with HIV, and fought to fully fund the Ryan White CARE Act. * I am proud that I hired a National Director of LGBT Outreach within a month of announcing my candidacy for President and to have openly gay and lesbian staffers serving at all levels of my campaign. * I am proud to have a National LGBT Steering Committee of over 130 that includes openly LGBT elected officials, Board members and opinion leaders on issues ranging from transgender rights, to HIV/AIDS, to Dont Ask Dont Tell. * I am proud to have marched in Gay Pride parades as both First Lady and as Senator and to have spoken in front of so many LGBT audiences ranging from the Human Rights Campaign, Empire State Pride Agenda, the Hetrick Martin Institute, PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), GMHC (Gay Mens Health Crisis), and the American Foundation for AIDS Research. * I am proud to have fought Republican efforts to demonize and marginalize the LGBT community, and I will continue to do that as President.
We have so much work to do. When I am President, we will work together to make sure that all Americans in committed relationships have equal benefits and that nothing stands in the way of loving couples who want to adopt children in need. We're going to expand our federal hate crimes legislation and pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and assure that they are both fully inclusive of all people. And finally, we will put an end to the failed policy of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Courage, honor, patriotism and sacrifice the traits that define our men and women in uniform have nothing to do with sexual orientation.
My father was a conservative Republican, who held very traditional views for much of his life. Yet in his last years, it was a gay couple who lived next door who provided much of the compassion and comfort he and my mother needed as he grew ill. And it was that same neighbor who held his hand as he died. If my father can move, America can move.
To each and every LGBT American, I say this. You have done so much to help this country understand your lives by simply being open and honest about who you are and living your lives with dignity. Thank you for your courage. It is time that we recognize your hard work. I know that this country is ready for changes in the law that reflect the evolution in our hearts.
America deserves a President who appeals to the best in each of us, not the worst; a President who values and respects all Americans and treats all Americans equally no matter who they are or who they love. I want to be that President. I want to be your President.
He's part of the head for one of the biggest womens groups in america, it's scarry.
I find his comments towards the transgendered people especially hurtful... I suppose I no longer buy into religion in the same way as his target audience... so being called a "sinner" for being gay doesn't seem to me as hard hitting as his comments about trans people like Dana Beyer, of Hilary Clinton's LGBT committee. He just outright denies that she is a woman and just refers to her as "that man in a dress" and "he", with "gender identity disorder".
She was campaigning against a misleading petition being carried out by the "concearned women for america", who were trying to reverse a law whichhad been changed to include gender equality in use of public fascilities... and managed to rephrase it into something along the lines of "Do you want older men taking showers with your young daughters", and went as far as to imply that she and other trans women were just men in dresses who want to use female public toilet and shower fascilities just so they can perv at the opposite sex. It's completely obscene and if they're scared of being perved at, what are they going to do with the gays in their showers... send them to the opposite sex rooms... surely as soon as they're moved situtation they're transformed into gay sinners to straight perverts... and sure sexual reasignments surgery is easy... i don't know why all paedophiles don't do it...
It's just annoying how much influence he has, he's no westboro babtist church with it's teeny family following - what a tit.
"Go forth Clinton! Do ye some quashing!"
I can't think of any similar british figures... our discrimination seems much more in way of ignorance than outspoken hatred.
I would love so much to be able to support Hillary Clinton, for her commitment to LGBT issues as well as the 'yay, female leader who is not Thatcher' factor, as well as the fact that I have a large soft spot for her. However, a recent ad campaign she did capitalised on Obama's ethnicity in a way that I cannot condone; basically, the premise is 'a phone rings. Who of Hillary or Barack would you like to answer it?' with a shot of a house of sleeping Aryan children, all very white-normative. Of course she is going to imply that one would rather she answered the phone because she wants to win and may believe she's more compassionate or whatever, but it makes me feel incredibly uncomfortable that the advert conveniently plays into ignorant, racist fears by implying that a black leader is not good for the USA.
Ironically the footage of the girl in the family was stock film bought by the clinton campaign but the girl in the film has stated she is an obama supporter. I thought that was sni!ggerable...
Other problems are that clinton is... well... clinton. It was Bill that started the bombing of Iraq, and was one of the primary fellas who thought it would be great to continue imposing economic sanctions on Iraq for Basic food and Medicine... It's under-reported, but sanctions have killed more people than the nuclear bombs dropped in Japan WWII. And there he is promo-ing her. She may well be another kettle of fish, but her lack of assignment to ruling out military action on Iran really doesn't bode well (Just like Obama, but unlike Nader/Gonzalez; currently campaigning for inclusion in the vote). Nor does her support of Israel. Surely the middle east has had enough **** kicked out of it for a while?
It does sound like a bit of a polarizing advert, but her extensive LGBT work and alignment with the human rights organisation isn't something I've heard from in the opposition... as I say though, her foreign Policy is what really gives me the shivvers (though 'bama is as bad too maybe worse lots of propaganda, and he's supposed to be a democrat).
... but, as yet, I have not come across any Obama propaganda that toecurlingly upsetting. I don't think it's a black and white situation (oh, gosh, I'm so witty) and I'm not saying I swear complete allegiance to Obama, but at the moment he makes me feel slightly less uncomfortable.
Also, very early on into his campaign, he openly said under questioning that he had taken cocaine as a teenager. I find that honesty hugely refreshing. Take that, David Cameron.
The Clintons were brilliant with LGBT issues. There was a fairly homophobic order put out by the ex-president to military/security cheifs (can't remember which one) b4 Bill Clinton... he changed this via an exectutive order so that it was in support of LGBT folk and protected it by putting out a clause about that order so that it can never be changed.

On a side note, does anybody know how the hell the american presidential elections work? cos they baffle me.
Other than that I don't like David Cameron/the tory party & I despise Labour (several of their cabinet ministers should be rounded up and shot)... I'm all for the Lib Dems as they are fantastic at a local level and deserve a bash at the top level. Nick Clegg is a good MP as well, he used 2 do my local area.

I have a vague grasp of how the US election system works but trust me, if I tried to explain, I'd be here for hours. The big difference, really, is that in the UK we vote for a party and the leader of the party with the majority gets in, whereas in the US, they vote directly for who they want to lead them, and the elections for their equivalents of MPs are a separate thing.
As for the British elections, I find the prospect rather depressing. I can't stand any of them, and they're all pushing similar agendas. What's the point of having several parties if they all say the exact same things?
slash i'd rather have the none-choice of the agenda's being pushed for in this country, than the options (or none options) available in most countries in the world. it really could be worse.
Oh yes, we're lucky people. Things could be worse.
But nevertheless. I want there to be a choice between an actual conservative party, an actual socialist party, and an actual liberal party, instead of three variations on the same vague liberalism. This consensus only serves to stifle debate and encourage apathy. Oh, and it'd be nice to have a system in which every vote counted, instead of everything coming down to a few marginal seats, and the majority of constituencies having the whole thing being a foregone conclusion. I'm very politically-minded and yet I'm inclined to abstain because I know my vote will essentially be worthless when it comes to deciding who rules the country, and because I'd like to vote for someone I genuinely support rather than wearily choosing the lesser evil. This is a tedious state of affairs.
And I think I'll stop there, before I end up writing an essay.
But just because things could be worse doesn't mean we ought to be satisfied/silent. I think the fact that we're privileged means we've even more of a duty to fight for what we believe in, otherwise we're pissing our privileges away and in doing so disrespecting the plight of those who have no such privileges.
I really, really want an abstention option. Does anyone know if there's a proper official campaign for one knocking around anywhere?
Don't know, I think we should make our own political party... if the BNP can do it then y can't I? Without all the racism of course.

Whats wrong with s****horpe? I've never been there but really that is censorship too far if you can't google it.
On the subject of censorship though did anyone know that you can't access the forum from a mobile unless you have enabled restricted content. Apparently even with the editing of words like ****tails etc it is unsuitable for under 18s. outrageous!
Nothing really. I lived in Grimsby for a few years and Scunny always seemed to be the poor cousin....which, when you know Grimsby, is saying something.....but at least it isn't Hull Hehehehehehe
Found a rather brilliant description of Scunny online - apparently its major industry is handbag theft and the women of the town walk round with mattresses on their backs in case they meet anyone they know. Hoho.
On the subject of Hillary though - I liked her quite a lot before but after reading that speech I LOVE her! I do hope that she pulls through and wins the nomination but it's looking ever less likely these days.
