I am having difficulty in finding out why The New Penny in Leeds is named so. It was changed from the Hope and Anchor in the 70's but that's as much as i can find.
I am a student at Leeds Uni currently doing my dissertation on pub names and I'd really appreciate any feedback.
well..... i can only guess that there was a change in ownership, and to kind of boost customers it chose to reference decimalisation also in the 70s when you'd have to call our current pennies (100th of a pound) "new pennies" to not confuse them with old imperial pence. It would then make it appear very modern, by having a time specific name, also implying that it was all for "out with the old, in with the new" forward-thinking-ness.
hey sorry just found htis thread so hope you still see this
the new penny if my source is correct and hes usually reliable hes one of the old gays who has been in the new penny since the dawn of time he stated the new penny was always a gay bar and it was this clientell that gave it its name it may well have something to do with the regional gay references.
he stated it was so named beacuse like shiney pennys gay people are different something shiney in a dull world not sure how true this is your best bet would be to contact the family that used to own it they still live locally and had owned tha bar for years
you spoke to the current management & owners? they can usually give u the history of the place
