karaoke and queer theory?

firstly thanks to everyone who came to razz i had a great time again, even though the bastard fake blood hasnt completely come off...

anyhoos for part of my course (really) im doin research into karaoke for a theatre production, and will be at the bridge at 8pm on thursday possibly havin a go, if anyone fancies it. if ya have any ideas on critical cultural theorists all the better, ive been vaguely looking at Butlers gender performativity, Auslanders liveness and Dryers entertainment, but the most important aspect is watching karaoke take place and the bizarre ettiquette/embarrassment, etc.

I get a similar reaction when I tell people I'm analysing Madonna for my course. If it would help i've got a couple of essays on gender and sexuality in music by Roy Shuker and Sara Cohen in my textbooks, not sure if they would be very helpful or not. What is it specifically you're looking for?

Razz was great btw I will be definately at the next 1 now xx

i guess what im most interested in is the way identity is constructed through performance. i've been to a few 'striaght' karaoke nights and im goin to an 'arty' one with homemade videos, and just comparing them all and seeing what i have to do to turn karaoke into a theatrical performance.

whenever i've read foucault i'm never quite sure i get what he's going on about. oh and helena wrote a Jean Genet song about cruising libraries with the line 'where, where, where is she? i want her to foucault me!' its ace.

anyways, tonights the night im gonna! do karaoke...

that i have to hear!

foucault's all about unscrambling things. try to write what he says in your own words. you'll get it eventually. failing that, get mashed and enjoy the karaoke
