Early Eddie Izzard, although I do have a soft spot for Victoria Wood, despite the annoying "Let's Do It" song. Mainly for things like the following:
"So I flipped my lid. Apparently, I ran up and down the aisle trying to overdose on non-dairy creamer. I woke up in a mental hospital. They said "The main thing to do is to keep busy while you're here. What do you want to do - you can either make raffia mats, or take part in a documentary." I escaped from there by knotting sheets together to make a moped..."
Oh, and I have it on good authority that Stephen Fry ****es pure gold.
that is the book i have read most times in my life. i have a copy sitting on my shelf right now, and i'll gladly lend it to you.
it's odd that an autobiography is one of my favourite ever books, but it really is superb. i think i was partly helped by the fact that at the time i first read it, i considered myself to be in a similar situation to his at school. for want of a better turn of phrase, i really found i could associate with it, and it helped me through an emotionally turbulent period. (god i sound like such a twat)
as well as that, it's brilliantly written. it's incredibly funny, especially the way he swears. in fact, i'll go and get it off the shelf and quote bits.
there's a bit where he's complaining about not being able to sing, and it's just the most amusing tumble of expletives:
"I have to mime at parties when everyone sings Happy Birthday... mime or mumble and rumble and growl and grunt so deep that only moles, manta rays and mushrooms can hear me. I'm not even tone deaf, that's the arse-mothering, fvck-nosed, bvgger-sucking wank of the thing. I'm not even tone fvcking deaf. I'm tone dumb."

i've also (rather sadly) made a list of all the books he mentions, and am slowly making my way through them. it started off as noting down the ones he said helped him make sense of unrequited love, and ended up a little pedantic, recording even the ones he mentions in passing. i still have the list, but it has now turned in to my 'to read' list. i think it stretches to four sides of a4 now. sorry, i'm revealing too much about my anal retentive side now, aren't i?

I hate Stephen Fry. He's a ****. I thought this was going to be a thread about that cartoon series with the skelletons who lived in the dark dark town on the dark dark street in the dark dark house down the dark dark stairs etc. I feel let down.

Black Books is ace! I'm going to be just like Fran when I'm an older Alice.
I also agree with the comments about Stephen Fry. I'll gladly borrow a copy of his autobiography too.
