Okay, so there's a anti-british-nazi-party march coming up soon! Anyone wanna go? I'm thinking of going in a darth vader costume wearing a gay flag that says "embrace the dark side"
Nick Griffin, leader of the BNP, is due to appear at Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday November 2, charged with incitement to racial hatred. Yorkshire and the Humber TUC, and Unite Against Fascism, have called a protest at 9am outside the courts to coincide with this appearance.
In addition, the BNP has called a national demonstration in Keighley on Saturday, November 5. Disappointingly, the Home Office has refused to ban this. In light of this, Unite Against Fascism has called a counter-demonstration to take place in Keighley on the same day.
In an attempt to use their racist and fascist ideas to divide communities in Yorkshire and the Humber, the BNP have been spreading lies about ethnic minority British people and immigrants alike. Following the tragic July London bombings, they have systematically tried to incite hatred against Muslims, in a determined effort to demonise, isolate and exclude the Muslim commnity.
Currently the BNP seek to attract votes on the basis of racism, Islamophobia, anti-semitism, homophobia and the vilification of refugees and asylum seekers. But fascists also stand for the expulsion of Black and Asian people from this country, the destruction of the trade unions and the elimination of basic democratic rights.
The BNP has regularly attacked the LBGT community in the past. After the bombing of the Admiral Duncan in Soho its leader, Griffin, wrote "The TV footage of dozens of 'gay' demonstrators flaunting their perversion in front of the world's journalists showed just why so many ordinary people find these creatures so repulsive." When the BNP display views this ignorant, it is important the LBGT community joins the protest against them.
The BNP is already banned from the University of Leeds under the NUS 'no platform' policy. However, it is important that students unite with the wider community to make it plain that the BNP's racist and fascist ideas are not welcome in any part of Leeds. Students' Unions from as far away as Manchester and Liverpool are mobilising for these demonstrations, and it is vital that students from Leeds turn out in large numbers as well.
We aim to bring together the trade union movement, community and faith groups, as well as student societies, in an event that will demonstrate our united opposition to the BNP and their anti-democratic ideas, and will emphasise the way in which our communities can unite to work together towards a peaceful, intergrated future. With your help, we can halt the rise of the far right in this region.
We are asking students to meet at the Parkinson Steps at the front of the University at 8.15am on November 2 to march to the courts, or to make their own way to Leeds Crown Court in time to be there for 9am. On November 5, coaches will be running to Keighley from the university, booked by LUU. Please, inform all members of your society of these protests and request that they bring as many people along as they can. Please also request that they get involved with building these protests on campus. Leaflets and posters will be available for your members to distribute and display in their departments.
We are planning an anti-fascist rally to take place at the University of Leeds in the days running up to this demonstration. Exact details have yet to be confirmed, but we hope that speakers will include a national Unite Against Fascism speaker, a holocaust survivor and representatives of the Trade Union movement the Labour Party and Stonewall.
For more information and to get involved, please telephone 07989 448 883.
Yours in solidarity,
Andy Lawson, Leeds Unite Against Fascism Ruqayyah Collector, LUU Executive
