Okay, this rant isnt going to be as bad as it would have been when i got back from Wind Down last night, here's the deal, I've been to graveyards with more life in them, it comes down to that last night, there was only Laura and Rachel? there I was informed that Nic and Alberto had visited, but really, thats not even the entire committee, can be bothered to turn up to events, (this is in light of tuesdays coffee hr, where there was no coffee!) where committee members seem to be shirking duties. I'm more annoyed that it took me two and a half hours to get home (going via wakefield!) so yeah... Nic and Laura set up these events for your benefit people, it'd be nice to see some of you at them!

Okay, i'm done.

Hugs and Kisses.

James.

I believe Wind Down is being scrapped after Xmas.

Also, I think after a day in uni and a committee meeting, the last thing most committee members want to do is sit in winddown, especially when people just don't really want to come.

Bring on January I say!

We have also had problems covering Tuesday coffee hour just because people haven't been free, it should be fine aftter exams when people's timetables change, but just because we are on the committee, we can't skip lecturesor other commitments on a regular basis. Hopefully there will be tea and coffee for the next two weeks though...

You are right Adam,

I support the efforts of all you in the committee, as I know how difficult it is to manage studies and societies sometimes.
The events are there for everybody to attend whenever there is time available. I don't think it has to become an obligation for the committee members to attend.
As long as we keep a few regular events more collective (like a must) the rest of the regular gahtherings could stay more relaxed in the drop-by-to-say-hello style.

I understand James's indignation about not finding anyone there, but even a couple of souls are enought to make your day. Plus, I believe that Rachel & Laura are an amazing company for a bar night out. James you should consider yourself lucky.

Sorry, I was not there myself although I mentioned I was going. That evening, I felt sick after having an extra-hot curry out with a bunch of actors, so by 8 pm I was already home lying in the sofa in my pyjamas and with a cup of relaxing camomile in hand. Sounds more exciting, don't it?

Sorry again for missing some of the events this week.
I think I can help with some coffee hours (once a week at the most)
If there are staffing problems for a particular day email me. I could do something.

Hugs to all

Apo

Oooh, James, man! I'm so sorry you came all the way in the end. I had a quite eventful day on Friday, what with organising Coffee Hour, going shopping for the ball tomorrow and then the committee meeting. I remembered you said you might come to Wind Down, but after a while I assumed you were not coming, so I decided to go home and have dinner instead.

As regards Coffee Hour, Adam is right. I would have taken over on Tuesday if I hadn't had a meeting with my disssertation supervisor. Sadly, we can't account for all abscences!

Thanks for your thoughts, Apo!

I can assure you that the committee members make every effort to attend as many events as we can. We are all studying for degrees though, have our own lives outside of lgbt and I for one can't afford to go to every event!

We've been trying very hard to make sure every coffee hour is covered from 12-2, but if we're all in lectures they have to take priority.

Also (and this doesn't go just for you, James, but for everybody else), if you've got any complaints of any kind (either about other members or about the committee itself) can you please make a formal complaint to the committee via email or by speaking to us? The forums are not the right place to deal with these matters.

You gotta remeber that people have lives to live also. I live with two of the committee, and can assure you that the time and effort they put into the society far exceeds some other Institutes. What more can they do but dragg people there. And lets just say that wouldn't be a pretty sight. Chill. Peeople should and are given the choice if they wanna attend events. Enuff said.

Alby, thing is if i bitched and moaned about one or two members i would go to you people on the committee, unfortunatly seeing that i am aiming this at everyone no way in hell can you people tell everyone, more people read the forums, this way is quicker.

true. i lived with dom and co during summer, and was close to lots of committee member slast year. they do a lot of work, put in a lot of time, and most of them have demanding courses.

they try their best, and so should members, especially in understanding how difficult it must be to balance the academic and society requirements. I´m more than sure that if any of the committee thought they were letting their duties slide, they´d rectify the situation as soon as they could : )

besides, members make the society too!! : ) so get active!

Hey James!

Sorry it's took me ages 2 see this, I've been busy working demanding full time shifts, attending NUS LGBT conference, sorting out events n committee stuff, not to mention sorting out assembly stuff, trying to get our point across to the newspaper n exec, talking to Leeds Met about stuff regarding the paper and LGBT events, writing an informative booklet about LGBT issues to be sent to all the incorparated bodies in LUU, including the exec, union council and our society, filling in application forms for the prison services, also trying to balance a relationship, sleep n a social life.

Blinky wrote:

Thats exactly why I hate running Wind Down and have done since been elected, but I still make the effort to go.

Blinky wrote:

Ally and Laura stayed on to run wind-down that night. Me, Joey & Alby had been there to start if off, right away thats 5 committee members who made the effort (bear in mind we've had 3 committee members quit in the last few weeks, John, Dave & Evie). Sorry but 5 out of 8 committee members turning up to the event to start it off should be enough, you can't expect all of us to be there all of the time, we have lives. I've recently not been able to make it to coffee hours and some evening events due to working full time so I can actually afford to live, other committee members have similar committments.

On a further note I'd like to point out that Me, Joe and Richard were going away to NUS conference on Saturday and had packing/final arrangements to sort out on Friday night before getting up at 4am on Saturday morning to go to conference, this isn't for a weekend trip away, but to bring back information etc to educate the LGBT, LUU and run sucessful campaigns with the support of the NUS and other universities across the country.

Blinky wrote:

(this is in light of tuesdays coffee hr, where there was no coffee!) where committee members seem to be shirking duties.

Lets just clear this up..
1) The committee are doing full time degrees, the nature of these are that there are deadlines that EVERYONE doing a degree has to have their work in by. Sorry but as students the committee aren't paying for their education to not gain a degree at the end of this.
2) Coffee hours, hmmm well, lets see the people running coffee hours have to stay there n make cups of stuff for people, also if we've ran out of things, we have to go buy them from essentials out of our own pockets and then try to claim the money back. Sorry but we aren't ****ing loaded.
3) We've just had 3 valued committee members who put alot into the society quit, so we are feeling the strain of trying to adjust at the moment, Joe's taken on all of the mens officer work, just like Ally is taking on all of the chairs work, with Evie gone Me, Laura n Ally are taking over the womens officer work, as well as our own committee position duties, so rather than shirking duties we are in fact taking on more to ensure that the society runs smoothly for our members!
4) We have lives outside of the LGBT, people have to work to support themselves financially, do their uni work, make time to see their family n friends from home, make time for their other halves, etc. The LGBT stuff is voluntary as well so we don't get anything out of being on the committee. If you refer to the top of this post you'll see just how much I'm trying to juggle at the moment & I'll admit right now its stressing me out cos my sleep and social life are suffering. I aint doing all of this **** for my own good.
5) Most of the committee are involved with the assembly and therefore, working hard and fighting for your rights with LUU, just bear in mind that when most of you have a problem concerning homophobia etc around campus you come to me and expect me to help you out with it, because I can't do everything this gets directed to the assembly and collectively we work together to sort out the problem. However people are more than happy to complain and raise issues, but not ****ing bothered about getting involved. Sorry but we aren't superhero's.

Blinky wrote:

so yeah... Nic and Laura set up these events for your benefit people, it'd be nice to see some of you at them!

Thanks for those encouraging words. I'd like to remind you that the committee do alot for the society, in the way of representing you, running your events, looking after your welfare, dealing with your complaints and issues. We do all of this on a voluntary basis and its a huge committment, we aren't doing it for our benefit but YOURS! So it'd be appreciated if you didn't go around berating the committee on the society forum, if you have a problem with us, e-mail us or speak to one of us seems that one of us is always around. End of the day we are only human and you as a society have to remember that.

(A very pissed off) Nic

p.s. Sash and Dom, Cheers for letting people know just how much me n Joe are putting in2 the society. Sash having u with us over the summer & Dom been there all time now, was gr8 cos the support you offered n offer is amazing, i'm pretty certain that without it I'd have had a meltdown, not only about the committee duties but everything concerned with the assembly.

Please remember that there are 8 Committee members, and 200-odd regular members of the LGBT. If you want events to be better then turn up to them!

As Sash and Dom have said, I live with Nic and Joe and see how much work goes in to organising the LGBT. Committee meetings can, quite frankly, be exhausting for them. It's really not a case of 'shirking duties'.

I was there on the Tuesday Coffee Hour when Ally had to leave an hour early. It was because she had other committements (namely needing to work) and no committee member could cover for her as they were all busy either with work or lectures.

If you think you can do a better job, why not try to make a difference and run for a position on the committee next year?

Okays, I know that i leaned into the committe a bit too much, but as you note, the society does have 200+ members, where the hell were they? Seems that the committee has given reasons for lack of appearances, which i can accept, i do have classes and essays as well, and know they can be a bitch at some times...yeah, i think i've about run out of steam now...until the next event....

Understatement of the year! There was only one bit in the post that referred to other society members, the rest of it wasn't leaning into the committee abit to much, it was blatently ripping chunks out of us.

I also think its ****ing stupid that you're only letting us off the hook because we've given excuses, end of the day we run the ****ing society and you shouldn't expect a full committee attendance at every event, as long as theres one or two committee people there, that should be a sufficient enough of people in charge to make sure an event runs smoothly. What next? Are we going to have to publish handwritten letters from our mothers excusing us from events?

Get over it.

Yeah, but that's still only 2% of members who go to Wind Down!

About bloody time it was scrapped, I'll say. Events are only good if people turn up to them, but you can't blame the committee for that.

Again, I understand James's frustration. After all, he does have to walk back home for three hours after events... but people should also look at how many events other societies organise and how much committment other committees show to see that our Society does do a lot of things for members.

Do other societies organise a daily event such as Coffee Hour?

OK, time to stop this tread now, before some says something to really upset everyone. Let it go. At the end of the day, if the majority of people were really upset over this, there woud be more people on here saying it. Yeah?...........

I'm with you, Dom. I think enough has been said on the matter, and probably we've taken Jame's rant too seriously. After all, it is a rant, and everybody rants every once in a while.
