Ok...its 5.28 and i have been up all day but i cant sleep.....this has been goign on for ages and i am exhusted, does any one have a good idea for how i can get to sleep at a reasonable time PLEASE.
try an alcohol induced coma. you'll get plenty of rest then and have fun before hand.
otherwise lots of fresh air during the day, some physical activity, a nice hot bath and a warm, cosy bed. oh, and if you have the horn, someone to bring you off.
sorry. i dunno which side of the bed i got out of this morning. i think i'm going a bit mental.
oh, and try not to sleep during the day at all. set your alarm and don't stay in bed late on a morning. you need to dictate when you sleep, not your body.

the problem is mrdarcy, not everyone has the same sleep rhythms. most people are diurnal (day people) but lots of us are actually night people (like my entire family...it makes holding down a job quite an achievement!)
if this happens to you often mrdarcy, maybe you should consider going to the doctor - he may be able to prescribe sleeping pills. the other option is, just deal with it like i do.
force yourself to sleep (or at least into bed) before a certain time every night, and have no less than two alarms on standby to wake you with the loudest noise possible. try chamomile tea...or if you can find it, valerian root (a good herbalist should have some). valerian root is great for helping you to get to sleep : )
alternatively, find someone whose sleep pattern ya wanna screw up and get chatting...midnight mayhem could be waiting

I remember reading somewhere that having an orgasm was one of the best ways to get off to sleep quickly. And you don't need someone else around to do that!
Failing that, I've found that it helps to be firm. Make sure you're in bed at a decent time and up at a decent time. Put your alarm somewhere that entails you having to get out of bed so you can turn it off.
There is truth to what Sash said about some of us being 'night people', though. I forced myself to get up at 7.30am every morning over the summer when I was working, and it made me miserable as hell, even though I was getting my eight hours. At the moment, I sleep from about 3am until 10am and feel so much better.
Hmmm... the thing is, when a sleep pattern is so different to what you want it to be, it takes a while (I'd say) to change it completely... how long have you been going to bed so late?
I read a few tips online the other day (when I woke up in the middle of the night) and they said... get up at the time you must get up, even if you've not slept at all, and the following night you'll go to sleep almost for definite.
No napping during the day, though! It will prevent you from going to sleep at night.
Hope you've had a bit of sleep at least. And hope the room didn't go round and round after all those "iced teas"...
Hugs

It's true as the sudden release of endorphins cause relaxation and drowsiness.... so I think it's time to spend more time with lady palm and her five lovely daughters
Whoops that was me forgot to log in! There must be loads of drugs out there you could buy to knock yourself out for a few hours I'm sure! I need something to stop me over-sleeping I think...

Well, I'd love to stay and chat, but you're a total bitch.
I recommend normal tea with honey in it, a bath before bed, and enya (if you can stand her) or mike oldfield (if the notion doesn't make you want to kill yourself)
doe´sn´t matter - you can use normal table salt or rock salt/sea salt for your bath. does the same thing except without the lovely fragrance.
for that, get some essential oils (you´re bound to know at least one hippy student you can steal them off) and put three drops in the bath as it runs : )
failing that, keep an eye out on the vicious rumours thread as dave hints...
splash x
(i just saw you had no bath. oops.)
and anyway, 3.15 is the PERFECT time to be awake, just not if you´re a day person! : D 3.15 is my favourite time of day or night. it rocks like cheese, oh yeah, it does, ya know it.

Valerian Root from H&B is great. That's what I used. It's a herabl remedy. And if you put a dropper full into some cafeine free fruit tea an hour before bed, it knocks you right out. Otherwise you could try watching SKY news at night. Enough to bore anybody to death!
I suffered a bit with insomnia in my first year and a little this year.
I found 'winding down' at least an hour before bed helped - that meant putting my wrok away, maybe having a hot bath, making sure the sheets were clean and fresh, having some camomile tea and just 'letting go' of the days worries.
Exercise is also good.
I am in bed at 11pm for a 5.15am get up at the moment. Which in itslef isn't horrendous, but definitely tires me out!

I suffered from insomnia for the first month of term. I tried every thing I could think of, it drove me absolutely round the bend. I couldn't sleep at night but kept falling asleep during the day. In the end I went to the doctor and begged for something to help- probably seemed quite demented. He suggested it could be stress and that I get some counselling, if thats not an option keeping a diary is the next best thing. also got some anti-histamines which make you sleepy, cutting out caffeine after midday also helps. That was all I was surviving on at the time but it does help. Lavender is supposed to help, but i'm sceptical about that. Not sleeping during the day is important, however difficult (believe me it is), setting a time to go to bed and to get up. Routine is important.
However I can't talk, still having problems with sleep, but its staying awake that I'm having trouble with now.
