Rubbish songs??

After seeing the Katie Melua advert for her CD about a billion times on tv I've sort of come to like her song nine million bicycles, although everyone I've asked seems to really hate it with a passion!

Am I the only one?

my grandma hates it but that's probably because my grandad wouldn't stop singing it...well the 2 or so lines of it that he knew anyway...she made me buy him the album for christmas.

so yeah my grandad likes it and i don't think it's too bad either

ok that was random but i'm tired and should have been in bed hours ago

She's godawful. If you want to listen to mellow female singer-songwriters, I could name about 20 who're better than her off the top of my head.

Anyone who likes this MOR pap should go out and listen to some decent music. Even happy hardcore would be preferable.

I quite liked her fist album, was great for background music for dinner parties. Oh my God I sound like a socialite, HELP!

Her second album just never struck me though, whenever i listen to it i feel so depressed I have to put evanesence on just to cheer myself up.

Agreed. And don't think you can even call her a singer-songwriter, as she doesn't write half her stuff.

I'd recommend Joni Mitchell, Fiona Apple, later Tori Amos, Beth Orton, Cerys Matthews, K D Lang, Martha Wainwright for female singer songwriters that are actually decent.

Oh and I say 'later Tori' because that stuff is much more melodic and 'radio friendly', so thought it fitted with the genre a little better than her late nineties stuff.

Her fist album?! What sort of dinner parties were you hosting?!

Other females to check out (as well as the ones John K mentioned): Cat Power, Laura Viers, Vashti Bunyan, Jenny Lewis (well, kind of), Mirah, Patti Smith... etc. etc. etc.

And Hani, I think proughan meant that KT Tunstall made him feel so depressed that he found Evanescence to be cheery in comparison!

Laura Viers is amazing! Everyone should at least own 'Rapture' from her album 'Carbon Glacier' its such a good song. And it wasn't produced by Uncle Bulgaria either

Can you recommend any good Martha Wainwright songs to me? I'm really into Rufus Wainwright at the mo so figuring they must have a certain similarity about them!

Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole is the one I quite like. Alice is the martha fan really. I don't know that much about her or her music, but like what I've heard :)

To set the record straight.

Ok typo first album not fist album.

And i did mean katie melua's second album. KT Tunstall is Not depressing, its actually quite cheery. Evenescence cheers me up because of the beat, I don't actually listen to what they are singing about.

KD Lang and Beth Orton are cool too

i second evanescence! if you´re actually clinically depressed, they´re surprisingly upbeat and happy!

plus, they´re odd. bonus points for oddity.

yeah, she's really hot

on the shaved head theme, does anyone else remember when sinead o'connor had a shaved head, and she had things superglued to it? or is that something i've made up?

Not her best, but close too. I think Thank you Stars is her best. Although if you listen to this stuff regularly, then Jewl Kitcher is much better, among others.
