Having been active members of the LGBT for two years and having been elected members of the committee for a year, we feel that we are now in an ideal position to represent all of our members within LUU as Chairs of the society. We are both successful, dedicated and hard-working in our current committee roles, and we can offer a diverse range of skills and qualities.

By running as a jobshare, we feel we are more than capable of balancing our studies with the demands of the society. Together we can offer twice the time, energy and skills of a single candidate. Having co-chairs also creates a more democratic committee and makes us more accessible to you, our members.

Our biggest personal achievement this year was our organising and running of Curious, which proved to be the most popular and inclusive event organised, providing a welcoming safe space for all LGBT students without sacrificing the fun factor. The event’s publicity attracted a large number of people who don't usually attend events due to their preconceived ideas about the LGBT. We intend to widen the reach of the LGBT by creating a diverse, fun and welcoming atmosphere. We need to remove the existing stereotypes and further increase the membership. We have the potential to be one of the largest societies in LUU.

As well as working towards these goals, we also recognise the need for political activity within the LGBT community. For example, in November, we took it upon ourselves to get people involved in the anti-BNP rally by organising a workshop and making banners for the protest.

Also, we have both attended NUS’ national LGBT conferences, from which we have gained valuable links with other LGBT groups and national representatives, with whom we remain in regular contact. If elected as chairs, we would continue to develop these links and forge new ones both within NUS and within our local area.

We also see the potential in forming links with local LGBT-friendly businesses and organisations to gain both funding and publicity in order to raise the society’s profile and reach, in the hope of creating a bigger and better society.

"Richard and Adam have shown a continued commitment to the advancement of the rights of the LGBT Community throughout the time that I have known them, as activists, service providers and representatives on a local and National level." James-J Walsh NUS LGBT Officer (Open-Place)

What will make me a good Chair?

EXPERIENCE: I’ve been in the committee for 2 years, and I’ve been involved ever since I joined, back in 2003!

GREAT COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Have you met me at Coffee Hour? I communicate effectively and know how to deal with any matters, whether publicly or privately, precisely what a Chair needs to do well.

IMPARTIALITY: I’m good at seeing everyone’s point of view. As Chair, I’ll make sure everyone’s views are dealt with respectfully, both in and out of the committee.

COMMITMENT: I’ve always felt responsible for every member’s well-being. Above all, I take things personally (but not dramatically ).

I KEEP IT REAL-NESS!: Chairing the LGBT Society isn’t about changing the world, but about meeting your interests and offering you a safe space where you can be yourself. Keep it real!

What will I do for you?

- Enforce the links with the LGBT Assembly to keep changing the face of University LGBT politics.
- Try to make it to NUS LGBT Conference and give you feedback on the proceedings.
- Make sure the committee works well and, above all, works for you.
- Restrict the number of songs I sing at Coffee Hour……… believe it?!

Having been a member of the LGBT for the past three years I have never actually sought a position on the committee though I have always been a great admirer of and have taken an active interest in its many achievements. Having been involved with the LGBT community for the past nine years, as both a member of particular societies and also running societies with the youth service, I feel that I have gained a large amount of experience for dealing with the numerous challenges that the position of Chair would present.

I have been a great fan of the work that the committee has done this last year, especially in terms of forging new relationships with the student union and the student paper and preserve said ties to for our mutual benefit. I feel that it is in the best interests of the society to maintain, and improve, these newfound friendships for the benefit of the society as a whole.

During my time as a member of the LGBT I have noticed that there is a large amount of untapped writing talent within our member base. I propose the instigation of an LGBT newspaper to showcase these talents so that any member of the society who feels they have something valid to say can express themselves. The paper will also give opportunities of experience to many of our members look forward to careers in journalism.

As this is the first position I have run for on this committee, I may not have had as much organisational experience within this LGBT as some of the other candidates for this position. However, I do feel that my life experience coupled with my ability to interact with a wide range of LGBT students makes me an excellent candidate who will lead, guide and advise the new committee throughout the year ahead.

Thank you

Over the past year I’ve been Mens’ Officer for LGBT society and Mental / Sexual Health Project-leader for LGBT assembly.

I’m running for chair of the society because I feel I’ve made a significant contribution to the society over the past year; I’ve proven this through dealing with issues faced by members, including;
- Homophobia / Discrimination within University, from students and staff, and externally, from general public.
- Relationship problems
- Coming Out
- Sexual Health
- Gender identity
I’ve formed and strengthened links with other services, internally and externally, including;
- Leeds Student
- Nightline
- Student Advice
- Accomodation Services
- Central Administration
- Democracy Support
- Equality / Diversity
- TRUEVISION
- MESMAC
- THT
- GUM Clinic

I’ve represented LUU on LGBT issues at both NUS National LGBT Conference and NUT Schools-Out! Conference, where I’ve made vital contacts, including James-J Walsh and Paul Patrick. Additionally, I’ve represented LUU in Media, internally in Leeds Student and externally on Channel 5. Furthermore, I have made links with other National LGBT societies, such as Bradford.

I would make a good chair because I am outspoken, yet approachable and trustworthy. Overall, I aim to continue to represent all members and their needs.
