Hey everyone!

i really want to go to the leeds summer ball, but i can't stand wearing dresses! has anyone of you been in that position?

as i understand from the dress code, a person can either wear a dress or a tuxedo. i can't wear a dress coz i'll feel very uncomfortable. i can't wear a tuxedo...erm...coz i'm a girl...

any solutions welcome!

PS: it's my first post too. huray!

Don't go to the summerball, that's my advice.

It's ****.

But if you are going, wear a tux!

Who actually cares what acts are playing. Have been looking forward to the summerball all year. All my friends who went last year had a blast and already know about 30 people planning to go. Just looking forward to one last amazing night out with all my friends, just cause i know we will be going our seperate ways after that and are never all going to be together again.

Also on the subject of dresses, it is in a field. Ball dresses are a big nono. Summer dresses though should be fine. (or so I've been told)

Totally.

I went in a tux last year. It was great fun, but I'm not a fan of formal wear. I might try and get away with a t-shirt and jeans this year... Even if the uni is overrun by absurdly elitist Rah types who think black tie is the absolute height of cool, who the **** are they to dictate my dress code?

There's nothing better than seeing everyone dressed smartly tho! Guys look so much better when they're in tuxedos.... or is that just me?
I'm quite looking forward to going this year even tho it wont be my last

First of all, chris H., it is natural for ppl to be turned on by a formal wear. Evolution has favoured people who were successful at attracting mates who are able to produce and maintain healthy offspring. Tux or formal wear is a sign of status, thus sign that the guy is capable of obtaining high status, material goods, and thus able to secur safe environment for the offspring.

To Proughan: Dude, you know how to make this season sound melanchonic. I need a violinist who can console a student in melancholic feeling/

do you really think that gays are turned on by men in suits because they want secure environments for their offspring?

Adam, when it comes to gays, evolutionary psychology is still in debates. Why do gays exist?
I think what applies to straight female also applies to gay males. The reasoning behind why some faces are attractive, and why others aren't is because attractive face is a sign of good genes. This has been proven. Now, if gays don't care about attractive genes, why would they care about if guys are attractive or not?
I believe that due to neurological report which demonstrates some overlapping between female brain and gay male brain, what applies to straight female MAY also apply to gay male to certain degree.

Forgot to add another thing. These evolutionary adaptation is not a conscious response. It is a cognitive process which has evolved through 10,000 years or so of human development. It is more of an automatic response.
And about my previous post. I should have said "why would gays care about attractive genes if they are not going to reproduce?"

evolutionary psychology is also quite fundamentally flawed in that it comes to a point where you accept it or not....and gays liking men in suits because they think they have more money to spend on their children is a little far fetched. Having money to spend on them however i could believe more!

And besides, Trivers is a muppet. Its Freud all the way

There is also a theory that gays are missing the mental capacity to be interested in all of this, because whatever in the brain causes homosexuality bypasses the desire to start a family and all the associated mental bits (i'm really not a psychologist). This is supposed to explain why gay people are often more creative than straight people, because without the natural desire for families and the associated lifestyle they have more brain to dedicate to being geniuses.

ooh! look at you scott, quoting PEOPLE and everything! lol!

clever clogs!

Anyway, i'm just going to the ball because my boyfriend wants me to go with him, because he's hot whether he's in a suit or in nothing at all. I don't want to go because of clothes but because it's the end of the year, because it's lots of friends together, and because it's a CRAZY night before all the stress of the summer hits!

On the point about what to wear to the ball for the individual who's concerned, perhaps a chat with whoever's in charge of the event in the Union Committee would be an idea... They would have the go-ahead to say to bouncers, 'yeah, don't be so bloody fussy' because we'll have the whole LGBT up in arms if they try and force a girl into a floaty dress. I think you should be able to wear what you like as long as it's appropriate in demeanor and concept. WHAT it is, I don't think we should really care!

Good luck!

If you wear a tuxedo you could always make it more girly if you wanted by wearing a different shirt or a corset or something under it.

Pendulum are going to be there too- rah!

Scott you kinda ruined the intellectual effect when you said your lecture would be "well lol"...

Personally I think anyone will look great if they themself feel happy with what they're wearing so I say wear what the hell you like and tell the bouncers where to stick it!

Hmmm, is anyone else not surprised with an image of adam walking around the house in a flowing ball dress?

I imagine him looking a bit like a cross between Bree from desperate housewives and Annie Lennox for some reason.... in a non-offensive way of course!

That would be Annie Lennox who doesnt wear dresses then? (apart from that horrid oscars thing last year)

Though having said that I reckon I could make a convincing Lennox lookalike

what´s wrong with wearing skirts and dresses?

anyone who doesn´t know me in person has surely missed the comic opportunity that a latin beardie-boy in a flowing skirt can provide, lol...
