Leeds has gained national recognition at LGBT conference. This afternoon the LGBT Assembly was awarded NUS LGBT Society of the year 2006 for all of the work its done in the last year & the changes its affected around Leeds!
Naturally this calls for a MASSIVE piss up! Plan of action is meet outside the union at 6pm on Tuesday for celebratory drinks. Mainly cos we've been asked to get a photo of LGBT peeps at Leeds who have made a difference, been all smiley n posing with the award... the pic will be sent to NUS & published in national papers. So you don't have to be in it, if u don't want, but still come along & celebrate regardless.
Committee, I'd love 4u 2b there cos we have been working closely & u've been helpful on alot of things. Either way, lets celebrate the sucess that we've had at Leeds for LGBT rights and equality and celebrate that we've been nationally recognised as a damn good uni with a damn good LGBT (we beat off competition from 12 other uni's - was very hotly contested)

Wow!! Well done you guys! That's so impressive! Unis need good LGBT support as that's when most people come out, right? Great to think you guys are leading the way and making a real difference. Pride on many levels.
yeah its true, alot of ppl come out at uni & its always good to have best possible support there.
Praise for Leeds included...
1. Being proactive and approaching the university & its departments, seeking to work with them. It's something which hasn't been done by others. (Joey, thanks for been at every meeting with me, been constant support & helping with the building of influential links, its seen all the changes this year)
2. Havin our union as a hate crime reporting centre & empowering LGBT students to report hate crime. (Thanks to the committee for working with us on this! Well done folks! We are leading in this area.)
3. Progressive work/ideas for inclusion of disabled students within the LGBT. (Ben's doing alot on this & it will be bought up soon. Well done mate! & Cheers!)
4. Placing focus on womens sexual health & getting dental dams in. (Sally, ur obsession with dental dams is brilliant & u've got some really good ideas. I'm enjoying working with u so far, Thanks luv!)
5. The booklet. (BIG THANKS! to all who contributed personal experiences, Dom for the overview & everyone who proof read and provided constructive criticism, it turned out fantastically & was ultimately the turning point in what was an uphill struggle)
AND, this is by far the biggest praise we recieved...
6. Commitment to inclusion of Trans students, pushing for Trans rights as a main focus & outreach work with Trans individuals. (Kate, working with you has been brilliant, ur efforts have been amazing! Also I'm glad to make this known... the outreach we've done together in the case of prospective trans students has been recognised. The person we were working with actually submitted a very touching nomination for us to NUS LGBT, detailing what we'd been doing for them & how it had been beneficial for them. This drew attention to us as the person wasn't a student here and it was the deciding factor in the awards as it really set us apart from other student unions. Seriously well done luv, its so positive to know that we've made a real difference that mattered to someones life, especially cos trans issues/rights are given a backseat compared to LGB rights within the LGBT movement. The nomination spoke highly of you)
All of these things listed above demonstrate just how great our lgbt community here is, especially when we all pull together and work as a team. It's been a hell of a year with extreme ups and downs, lets get more united & keep united, we've proved we can do it and make real progress & achievements that make a proper difference to peoples lives... we've set a standard, lets keep it up cos together we are unstoppable and the possibilities are endless. Seriously people get involved, alot of people doing a little bit each will add up to the same amount as a few people doing alot, you really can change things!
Once again thanks to all of you mentioned above. All weekend I've been singing praises to anyone who'll listen about our LGBT community & what we've done. You don't know how proud I am of you all and what we've achieved, so I'm going to be all soppy now... I had tears in my eyes and a massive grin when I was collecting the award n givin the obligatory speech, we've worked damn hard & its fabulous that we've been recognised for just how good & approachable we are (especially the nomination mentioned above, NUS read it out n it moved me 2 tears) It's made all the **** we've gone through this year to get where we are worth it.
Lets have a proper knee's up & celebrate this!
