I hope you are enjoying summer and having a great time. I am enjoying my summer, except for one thing, ls:tv needs help.
Your Student Television needs station your Help!
ls:tv at present, as you will know, owns it's own series of networked television sets around our union. On this network we broadcast everyday we can during the academic diary. Our network allows us total control in terms of, advertising, length of broadcasts, live shows etc. All in all it is the perfect system for ls:tv, and is our station's most important asset. However, all of this is in jeopardy. Our union has been approached, and is now talking, with a company called Sub TV.
Sub TV is a business who sets up its own series' of television networks in student unions across the country. Its aim is to lend itself out to advertisers and gain profit from the massive unique student market. They are creating a monopoly in this area, and as such are already in many of the leading university unions, including some with established student television stations such as ls:tv.
If our union signs the 10 year contract with Sub TV, ls:tv will be changed forever. We would lose our network, and as such will lose the freedom we have. We would instead play out in a designated time slot on their network, leaving us limited to how long we have on air, how much we can advertise, and could subsequently lose the ability to broadcast live (an ability that is integral to the shows we produce).
ls:tv is fighting this decision to bring in a company and a business to replace the freedom we deserve. Our union's motto is 'Not for PROFIT just for STUDENTS'. Therefore, we are asking for your help to remind the union of this. You can help by simply emailing the societies officer John Schless at socs@luu.leeds.ac.uk and say in your email that you support ls:tv, and that Sub TV should not be allowed to come into our union. Preferably, it would be brilliant for everyone to email at 5pm on Tuesday 20th of June, or around this date. This is so that they recieve all our replies at once to make a bigger statement. However, if this is not possible, please email whenever you can.
I hope you can help, and thankyou for reading this email.
Remember, socs@luu.leeds.ac.uk
