hi guys, it´s just occurred to me that we don´t actually have a part of the website for "international students"...is it perhaps possible to set up a part of the website for any and all international students? might help those gays who are multilingual too : )
it´s probably not worth it, but i just thought I´d raise the subject anyways!

would also cut out alot of people who couldnt speak any other languages and make it very hard for the commity to make sure nothign bad was being said about people of they cant speak the language, one would expect that if your comign to leeds uni you will be able to understand english so i dont really see the point
I dunno, Darce. Must be tough being gay in a foreign country and I bet lots of people would love to swap supportive notes on cultural shock issues. People can always complain in English if there is an offensive post. (or freetranslation.com). There is surely a danger in LGBT equality policies becoming too queer-focussed?
I would be terrified of walking into a foreign coffee hour. Imagine, people speaking so fast, so many exclusive cultural contexts. Support on the website would be a great first step.
Website or forum? Don't forget they're 2 very different things.
A central resource on the website would be useful i think. A section on the forum is something that's been talked about a lot before but never actually happened.

you forget that we have an International Officer on the committee precisely BECAUSE english is not everybody´s first language at our university, ie, outreach to international students...
..also, Breconboy is right. it´s hard being gay in a foreign country (try living in Catholic Bavaria as well). i´m lucky i live in Munich with its big gay crowd, but it´s taken me this long to actually make gay mates...being gay in a foreign language is even harder...

I think that's an interesting idea. If something offensive is written in another language, it could be less of a problem cos most people won't be able to read it! haha But then of course, as Breconboy pointed out, a complaint could be made in English.
The only thing is, there are foreign students from many different places, so should they really all get separate sections? i.e. a German section, a Japanese section etc. But I suppose someone could just start a topic in whatever language, and other people who speak that language can just contribute if they want and that would do it.

(all ways the antaganist)..... but why? is it not just inclusion for inclusions sake? of course we have forign students, but it never seems to have been a problem befor (on the forum). But for one i do agree with rich that the website could do with a over sea student page, preferably with 5 or 6 diffrent languages being used on it, just saying most of the stuff on coming out and acceptance, have a PDF down load of each in a few more commenly spoken languages eg, japanese, french, german , italian spanish ect now that would be useful.
erm... would be probably nice to have an international section as in international events thingys, bt seems a bit pointless to b in diff languages, ppl are stil interested even if they cnt speak double dutch! bt i reckon a section would b good...
13% of all Leeds students are international. Does anything like a proportional percentage turn up to events? Leeds LGBT could really offer more for these students. By talking on the net to other students from their country, they will be more likely to come to events as they will have groups of native speakers.
Provision on the website would be good but also can we make sure that we have a programme of activites available to be picked up from the international student office.
a programme in that office would be good. The million n one languages seems like abit of a strange idea cos no1 really chooses to go n study in a country where they don't speak the language & if ur gonna do hours n hours of pdf's containin loadsa languages, y not make it multicultural and include urdu, punjabi, hindi etc, cos it might encourage more LGBT-ers from ethnic minorities to join, which seems like an idea cos theres a large amount of ethnic minority students here at leeds but hardly any in the society...

um, if people are willing to provide these translations then we could see about making them available. But I wouldn't have a clue where to start I'm afraid! (I really wish I was multi-lingual) x
