Freshers Packs
Permalink

Hey All!

Just a suggestion cos we see it every year, freshers arrive early for events in the first few weeks, are waiting around for ages not knowin who they are looking for or daring 2 ask anyone if they r from LGBT at events.

I remember the first event i went to in freshers week in my first year, was a 7pm meet in the old bar, cos i wernt used 2 buses n how long it took to get from dock 2 uni I wer there at half 6 & were slightly lost, plus I didnt know who the hell I was looking for.... luckily I was spotted by sum1 in the roleplayin society who was friendly enough to talk 2 me n let me know that a couple of them were LGBT-ers & would point me in right direction when they saw 1 of the committee.

Am sure that other people have had similar experiences of waitin 4 events or turning up sumwhere and not knowing anyone, or who's in the LGBT n been not darin 2 ask anyone else, or purely just at their halls n feeling like the only 'gay in the villiage'.

Anyway stopping my ramblin, the suggestion is to put a little badge in freshers packs for people 2 wear with something not so glaringly obvious on it so rather than havin LGBT plastered all over it, just summat like "ME 2" or simply just a little picture (same thing on all really). That way if people turn up early to events or summat they can see who they are looking for really without havin 2 ask. Plus keepin it members only but not obvious will be safe 4 members n a comfort for new members.

Anyway like I said its just a suggestion but wot dya think?....

I think it sounds like a pretty good idea, cos everyone's had that thing of not knowing which group of people to go up to and ask if they're LGBT (esp in places like Parky steps, where loadsa people meet up).

But the thing is, if it's not going to be an obvious thing, how are newbie's gonna know what to look for and what it means?

I do think something like that would be a good idea. It's scary enough having to go up and ask someone whether they're in a society let alone the LGBT if they're not comfortable with their sexuality. It's a good idea I think.

basically put the same badge in each pack with a little note sayin 'if ya aint sure of which group ur lookin 4 look out 4 the badge, every1 in the soc has 1, only us & now u, know wot it means"

that way its not obvious to every1 else at uni, ppl in the soc know it n it makes it easier 2 spot who ur lookin 4 without havin a shuffle bout awkwardly n ask questions u dont feel comfy askin

what concerns me is someone would be more uncomfortable wearing a badge depicting their memberhsip than asking "are you going on the scene tour tonight?". We are discussing as a committee and will get back to you....how very big brother

hahahaha yeah I remember her! She could have asked if it wer the backstage society tho before sitting with us n talkin 2 everyone... its not like she had 2 out herself as str8 2 a random group of strangers by askin if we wer the society she'd joined, unlike me n the roleplayin society (2 of them wer holdin hands so it looked like a safe bet). I still keep bumpin in2 them now actually bless them.

Im not sure giving everyone a badge will work particularly especially if word gets out what the badges mean and it 'outs' the whole society. Maybe if just the committee members wear them seeing as tho we'll always be at events anyway and Im sure everyone in the committee will have no worries about if we're wearing them or not?

Oh, whatever. Who cares? It's just a badge!

We'd wear one.

P.s. they should have pictures of eyes, just because i say so.

Whatever happened to the Gay Phone(tm)?

I dislike the idea of wearing badges, as let's face it, word would soon get around the uni what they stood for. I reckon the kind of people who would be okay with wearing badges are the sorts who'd have no reservations about going up to a group of people and asking them if they were gayers anyway.

Good idea in theory, mind, but ChrisH does have a point.

The LGBT phone was old n crap so it died plus the charger got lost 4 it, there was never any credit on it, no replacement was bought n even if one was the union wouldnt fund it... plus there was the problem of who was in charge of it on certain days etc n events like seperate womens n mens events that wer been held on the same night.

I think its a good idea, I remember the first time I turned up to an event, it was pretty scary. (I probably spent the whole time looking like a rabbit cought in headlights) At least for identifying who you're supposed to be meeting up with. It would have to be something totally random and obscure, like those charity pin badges, to blend in and look like something anyone would wear anyway, but not available anywhere else for obvious reasons. I wouldn't be comfortable with something that stuck out a mile and having people asking what it was all the time.
like if all the committee members wore little smilie badges or yellow ducks, or something like that........

I'm guessing you meant to put something explaining it in the fresher packs, just checking...

yeah exactly wot I meant.

On the topic of the gay phone I'd like to add that it was 2004/05 committee who lost it and therefore didnt hand it over to 2005/06 committee (me, laura, joe etc) then after Edinburgh conference we discovered that the union wouldn't finance a phone for that usage after we tried 2 put thru a receipt 4 a phone Adam bought up there. So no-one really wanted to shell out 4 a phone n not get owt back 4 it, plus it was a bugger to try n organise who was havin it, who had it, where it was n contacting ppl back cos it ran on credit which the union wouldnt give funding for and the only other alternative is contract but again it wouldn't be funded n sum1 would have 2b constantly shelling out 4 it with nowt in return.

The only other alternative is 2 give out ya personal number... but again that can be a right bugger 4 a committee member, cos u suddenly find ya phone gettin jammed up wi messages n stuff from ppl u dont know, end up spending a bomb replying, if u put it on forum any1 can get hold of it, as occasionally happens u get stuck with abit of a stalker who has ur number n rings/texts u 24/7... phone networks don't block individual numbers, u also run the chance of getting phonecalls at stupid o'clock in the morning from a lost fresher askin directions advice or info like taxi numbers & then there's the factor of ur number gets handed out to other ppl n u don't know who the hell has it. Trust me on this I did it in September for events n had all of the above goin on as well as the student newspaper quite happily handin out my phone number/e-mail address to anybody... its really not worth the hassle it causes

I don't think there'd be much of a problem if only people who were comfortable with it wore it [the badge]. Cos then newbies could identify us, but they wouldn't have to wear it themselves. Hmm... we shall discuss

plus i think wearing a symbol of nazi oppression might upset some ppl. I like the idea of having something for the freshers to know where to go cuz it's terrifying to turn up to an lgbt event and not know who in the room is gay and have to ask. Not that i would know since i was dragged to my first event by a certain someone who already knew evryone (not naming names although it starts with m and ends in ary frankland :P) it could be an idea to just get some of the committee to wear em so the freshers will know who to go up to. other than that me, jeni and nic could just down a few and then wander round asking ppl if they're gay :P

Its just an idea at the moment. Pics in the freshers packs kinda work, but ppl aren't always sure if the person in the picture is the person they are meant 2b looking out 4 & again if people arrive earlier than the committee they are gonna b stood around feelin pretty lost/thinkin they've got the wrong time/place & unsure bout askin any1 else if they r waitin 4 the same event cos there's no way of knowing, had that bundle of confusion to deal with last year

havent put it to the committee yet, just let me know if you think its a good idea

Just a word about badges - The uni I went to in Canada had an Ally badge where people who were not necessarily lgbt but who supported us could show their support. It was worn by a lot of people on campus who weren't lgbt but who were involved with human rights/ social justice or even people in authority to show that 'they were lgbt friendly.

for more infor follow the link http://csd.mcmaster.ca/leadership/posters/leadership_ally_poster-mar%2706.pdf

That kind of thing does not identify you solely as lgbt but as lgbt friendly which is a whole diferent thing altogether

Yeah... I didn't want to start a new thread, and thought this was as good a place as any to stick it.

So here's my review thingy for the pack:

Suck My Left One

For those of us who fancied a change to the usual sceney nights out in Leeds, our prayers were answered by the arrival of Suck My Left One in May 2006. The monthly night can be found lurking in Soul Circus (near Queen’s Court) and is chokablock full of indie/lesbirock/riot grrrl/electro tunes. You’d quite possibly hear songs from Gravy Train!!!!, Sleater-Kinney, Dusty Springfield or even that Disney classic ‘Under The Sea’. It’s a night where anything goes, you are free to celebrate whatever floats your boat – be it dancing around with glow sticks, dressing up as farmers or simply looking pretty ace hanging around the bar. Furthermore, this place is so damn cool; they used to draw a nipple on your hand to show that you’d paid. Since then, the drawings have become more adventurous, including a large variety of animals and weird creatures. At £3 entry and reasonable priced drinks, you’d be daft to miss SMLO, which takes place on the last Friday of each month.

Jeni
