Hey All! As you’ll probably be aware by now the University of Leeds LGBT Society runs a variety of events for international students. That doesn’t mean that they are solely for international students though! So please feel free to come along, even if you are from Canterbury. (Which would be unfortunate, though legislation says we can do nothing about this.) All the events are within the LGBT Society and all members are welcome. Bring friends too if you’d like!
Event 1 – Picnic in Golden Acre Park. Sunday 24th September This is actually a real place, which surprised me a lot. We will be meeting by the library pub before catching the mysterious X84 bus (‘where does it go, what does it do?’) to go for a picnic. This is a great chance to meet fellow society members, eat cucumber sandwiches, chill out with a glass of Pinot Grigio, before being inevitably mauled to death by the resident geese. I would recommend bringing a sacrificial loaf of Asda “whoops” bread.
Event 2 – United Gaytions – Thursday 5th October Ah yes! Alberto’s pun is back. This is a bit of an alcoholic event. Basically we’re going to meet in the old bar at around 8pm or so, drink merrily on Corona/Absinthe Daiquiris and then brave the ‘scene’ of mission. There are always lots of society members out on this night so it should be a good laugh! The men's/women's officers are running a night at this point too so we shall probably join forces.
Event 3 – To Kill A Mockingbird – Tuesday 3rd October The lovely people at West Yorkshire Playhouse are putting on a production of the Harper Lee novel and being students, we can get in for cheap between Monday and Wednesdays (EITHER £5 OR £8.50 SUBJECT TO AVAIL). Please let me know ASAP if you would like to come on this event so that I can buy your ticket at the cheaper rate. I would need your money in 5 days before the production. We will meet by Parkinson building at 6:45pm on the night.
Event 4 – Tea and Cake Otley run – Sunday 22nd October Back by popular demand is our take on the traditional getting smashed on too much booze. We substitute the booze with tea, and the only smashing to be heard is the merciless pillaging of the base of a raspberry ripple cheesecake. We will meet in Café Chi at 12pm and work our way through L’Oranaise, Cafetiere and Moorish…
Future events are going to run throughout the year, watch out for the mailing list which will detail all coming events, and most importantly don’t be scared to come along… to these events and of course the society’s main events. Also, as international officer, I’m here to answer any questions you have about the society's international stuff and am most easily contacted on eng4djt@leeds.ac.uk. If you’re worried about going to your first coffee hour etc… that’s what I’m here for. I look forward to seeing lots of people at these events and getting to know everyone.
All the best, David (international officer)
p.s. MONEY FOR MOCKINGBIRD NEEDS TO BE WITH ME BY 28TH OR YOU WILL HAVE TO BUY YOUR OWN TICKET ON THE NIGHT, IF TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE!!! IT WILL ALSO PROBABLY COST MORE.
ACE ACE ACE ACE!!! It all sounds lovely. Will try to come to as many things as I can, althogh I think I won't be able to make United Gaytions. I think I'm supposed to be running a social for A Cappella Singers that night. :o(
The X84 is the Ilkley bus that never stops however hard you wave your arm about. :oP
I'm getting all excited about these events. It's soooo nice having events planned by somebody else.
xxx

Sawasdee Krub, Greatfun! Maa Dai! Wan Ah-tid, Golden Acre Park... all that jazz. Adam, if you hear a knock on your bedroom door in a few minutes it won't be to offer you a brew.
I know! 2 years sees me flop from relative fluency to "what is the thai word for 'room' again?". Chaya is signing me up for Thai soc i think... he said he would anyways... it's quite good!
