The NUS LGBT campaign will be organising an emergency demonstration outside the Ugandan Embassy in London on Friday afternoon. A few weeks ago a popular daily newspaper in Uganda printed a list of prominent figures in public life who were gay, as well as a list of underground gay social clubs. The response from the Ugandan government has been swift and furious, and it seems that they are now starting to round up people on the list. This is made especially poignant for us as a student movement by the arrests of members of the Makerere University Students Association.
The Newspaper involved has now said it will publish a list of Lesbian and Bisexual people in the near future.
I'm in contact with other LGBT organisations and groups about the protest but extend an invitation to any NEC members who are available to come along to the demonstration at 4pm on Friday afternoon. We will be calling on the Ugandan government to respect the provisions enshrined in the Ugandan constitution giving citizens rights to equality and freedom and the clauses of the ICCPR (International covenant on civil and political rights) monitored by the UN which allows the right to privacy, free from discrimination.
I'm also encouraging people to write letters in support of the students and others who were arrested. Any support NEC members can show to this action is much appreciated. We are in the early stages now but more information will be available shortly.
That's horrible! Imagine your dad opening up the daily mirror and your name being there, and then imagine being rounded up for questioning. Mind you, i feel a bit sorry for the Ugandan Embassy. Would you like to open your door after a nice cup of tea to see Kat Lewis screaming obscenities through a megaphone?
True, but it's the same principle. By listing the names of peadophiles they were putting them in just as much danger from other people as the Ugandan press have done to their cdountry's gays.

Actually yeah, I have fantasies about it. On a pedantic note...
Kat Lewis is no longer the NUS LGBT Megaphone lady... that honour now lies with Claire Anderson.
And again, yeah.
