"Are you a man who has had oral or anal sex with another man (even if you used a condom)?" If you are, you can't give blood. This is just the blood service being homophobic, isn't it? Grr
Don't blame them, they do it for a very good reason. The fact is that all gay and bisexual men have aids, and our dirty blood would cause more problems than it solves.

oral sex as well?? i didnt know that. so...if you're straight, and you've had unprotected anal/vaginal/oral sex (with a straight person)...you're allowed to?
You can also have as much unprotected sex as you like if you are straight but if you have only played safe as a gay man you are still not allowed to give blood.
Whereas a woman whos had sex wi a bloke who's slept with another man is barred from givin blood for 12months. Another annoying fact is that all the blood recieved is tested 4 HIV/AIDS.
Its a simple case of outdated medical policy from the 80's been used to justify homophobia & it's time they reviewed their policy cos stats show that breeders are picking up HIV/AIDS pretty damn fast nowdays.
They should scrap the lifetime ban on gay & bi men in favour of a mandatory 12month ban for anyone (regardless of gender & sexuality) who's had unprotected sex - oral, anal or vaginal or sex where the condom has split, pending the results of a HIV/AIDS test, so barred for 12months, get tested towards end of the ban & if results show ur clean there's proof that the blood is safe cos its been tested well after the 3month window period. That way they aren't limiting the amount of blood that can be donated to them and can still ensure its safety.
It's one of them issues that really pisses me off cos the answer to it is so simple. Also I hate the radio adverts saying "did u know there's a new type of discrimination against the asian community, certain types of blood can only be given to other asian ppl, we need more asian donors, help us end this discrimination", hypocritical little ****s r willing to work with every other minority group to break down discrimination and increase their donations, yet will quite happily and openly discriminate against the LGBT Community and make no effort to work with us to end it. Other countries have made that step and happily accept donations from gay & bi men, such as Italy, so why the hell can't it be done here?
As much as I hate the NBS policies and the fact that its discrimination prevents others from living, I give blood cos I lost a mate who'd been a victim in a hit & run accident and didn't survive cos he needed several transfusions & the NBS didn't have enough blood to give him.
Am just well known down on the headrow blood centre cos it take me 45mins to give blood everytime I dontate (30 of them are spent arguing the policy wi the head of the practice). I'd definately say get involved with the assembly for the campaign, address is lgbt.assembly@leeds.ac.uk and even check out the NUS blood campaign... things will eventually change. Other than that, any ladies reading, get over ur fear of needles, donate & when you are let the NBS know that ur doing it cos a gay/bi mate of urs can't.

No restriction on lesbians though
that's because there's no such thing as lesbian sex
Ah well I gave blood yesterday... had a nice argument wi the practice nurse, then had 2b screened twice cos I was a **** n ticked every box (including the just 4 men question) then realised that I'd been in LGI after last time I donated n had 2 go thru another screenin again, YAY! Was worth it tho 4 the free orange juice, chocolate cake & ginger biscuits.
Why don't more lesbicorns donate???
