Hello all! To give you plenty of time to check out the manifestos they're all displayed below. The voting will take place during the first week of teaching next semester and hopefully we will try and make this possible via e-voting through the union to allow a fair system! We will keep you updated on how this will work. For now have a read through the entries and think about who you would most like to see becoming International Officer. How exciting I hear you all cry!
I am composing this manifesto in a bid to explain why I wish to nominate myself for the position of international officer. Although I have not been a member of the LGBT for a long time and technically not an oversees student, my knowledge base for working with individuals from diverse cultures plays a significant part in why I have chosen to put this manifesto forward.
If successful in filling this position, my aims and intentions would be to facilitate access to supportive services that LUU has, as well as informing overseas students about access to various social events. I would be prepared to act as an advocate for international students expressing any particular concerns and assist with the referral on to more appropriate figures.
My overall priority, if successful would be to make the transition of overseas students to Leeds University a smooth and welcoming one. The rationale for this is so that international students can enjoy the positive student experience that Leeds University offers, with the right amount of social input.
Thank you for taking the time to read this manifesto.
Hi, I’m Dominic. I’m standing for the position of International Students Officer because I believe that the international students in our society contribute a huge amount to the group as a whole, bringing different perspectives from other cultures to all LGBT issues, whether it’s on gay rights in countries around the world or just which celebrity they think is most attractive in this week’s heat magazine. Whilst not an international student myself, I believe that I am friendly and approachable – I hope that anyone in the society would be comfortable talking to me about any issues which were bothering them – and I think I would be very good at understanding and resolving any problems that society members found themselves facing, even if they might not be issues that I’ve had to face as a domestic student.
Although the position is only a temporary one, if elected I hope to organise an event or two next term (I have a few ideas but I’m open to suggestions), and will make sure that I’m available for you all at Coffee Hour (which is where I seem to spend a lot of time anyway) to discuss anything that’s getting you down and try to make you feel a bit happier, either by being a shoulder to cry on or just by virtue of my superb tea-making skills.
The LGBT society has made my life immensely more enjoyable over the last year or so, and I’d be proud and honoured to have this chance to give something back to it.
As an English student I have bags of free time and cannot think of a better way to spend these spare hours than to join the Leeds LGBT committee as International Officer. Looking after the needs of others is a challenge in itself. Looking after the needs of others from varying cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds is an even bigger and potentially more rewarding feat that I would really get my teeth stuck in to! I am a firm believer in equal opportunities and would actively promote an inclusive attitude for all of the LGBT's international students as well as be a confidential and attentive listener. I believe I have a lot to offer; I'm approachable, organised, understanding, learned and respectful of other cultures and a damn good drinking / dancing partner to take on a night out! (Mission anyone?!) I have already established lasting friendships with current society members as well as the team of the Leeds Metropolitan LGBT. If I am successful in securing the International Officer position I truly look forward to learning about all of the society's members: local, national and international. Meeting new people is a great hobby of mine and I think the position would be an enriching and important experience.
