The phrase that really gets me is this: "Now, I write under the name Carla Fong, but basically I'm Stu in Silverton. Honestly, it would be too much trouble to retrain the whole town."
So is she calling herself 'he' to make it easier on others? In which case, yes, this is a massive step forward for trans awareness and acceptance, but it's still not quite making the extent of liberation that I was hoping for, if Carla isn't able to express herself fully :o(
****ing sweet, just goes to show not all places are the same. perhaps it doesn't matter whether he has a male or female name; he's happy with the way he is, and he's been accepted by his community. I think that a name's just a name, and should be thought of as a label to identify a human being, and not a man, woman, trans or other.
I think that saying that its a bit of a cop out not to "retrain" the whole town to call him Carla is just critical and unnecessary!
Who are you to say that this person is not making the extent of liberation "you" were after, its their liberation not yours! I would say that getting a small American town to vote a transgender person into office is a massive move on in liberation terms!
Secondly, in the video he says that identify s as a heterosexual man and has a girlfriend, therefore why should he expect people to call him Carla if he is happy with them calling him Stu and if he still identifies as male.
and thirdly, if he has made a name for himself as Stu and is hoping for people to vote for him again, then as all political and ad campaigns know, you don't change the name of a product that is selling well......so it was probably a canny political move to make sure he keeps office by not switching to Carla, at least until people come to know him by either name.
