I'm a first year and I have been put off from coming to the lgbt because I've noticed that you're all just a group of friends really. Not in a good way either. What happens if someone falls out with one of you? Do you all hate that person forever? Is that persons views no longer represented because they are not friends with you anymore?

Hello. You're right when you say that we're all friends, but I fail to see how that's a bad thing. It's not a closed group, and we're always open and welcoming new members. Maybe you should give us another go - I'm sure you'd have a good time and make some friends of your own.

I won't bother responding to your other comments because they have no substance.

hi anon,
i agree completely with what rich said.
i know it can be intimidating to join a group where everyone already knows each other (i didn't join until my third year, partly for that reason), but i can assure you we're constantly getting new members coming along to events, and we're all nice really. i can understand it might look a little cliquey from the outside, but we certainly don't try to put that appearance across, because it's not really like that. come to coffee hour and you'll see.

In my experience, the society are a group of friends, but a continually expanding one who attempt to represent everyone's point of view.

If you have any concerns about the society, why not email the committee at
luu.lgbt@leeds.ac.uk and voice them privately.

Just to repeat what others have said, we are a really good group of friends - and I think that just proves what a good society we are. With over 200 members there are about 70 people who we regulalry see at events. We had 50 people at our AGM which is fantastic! That is certainly a big friendship group and is one of our big strengths not weaknesses

Because we are so friendly with eachother that can certainly be intimidating - but our numbers grow every week and we are always open to new members.

I really suggest you come along to an event soon and get involved!

Hope to meet you soon.

John xx

Why not get hold of the committee, and someone will come and meet you and bring you up to a lunchtime coffee hour and introduce you to everyone? If you have problems with the society you can certainly voice them to a committee member and they can be addressed.

Just want to reiterate what everyone's said. It's definitely worth going along to coffee hour. I was put off for two and a half years, but when I finally turned up in February it really didn't take long at all to settle in. Everyone's very friendly and I haven't ancountered any spats yet. It's a very big society, it can't really afford to be a clique.

perhaps some of us were just having an off day anon, unfortunately it happens! I'll be the first to admit ive been either high as a kite (not because of drugs, lol) lately, or crabby as a crab with nothing to crab at.

guess that's the exams looming...please come to coffee hour, we are nice people really, but we are only human, and sometimes we have our cranky days. promise to be nice, i usually wave a lot and wear far too much eyeliner! lol

I remember my first coffee hour where you were sitting on the window sill directing John C and John K in a game of magnetic fishing.

Just to reitarate everyone elses comments.
The society is, i agree, a group of friends, and we are always welcoming to new members. We are more than happy to meet you before a coffee hour if you are nervous and so on. It might be better to come and see for yourself rather than being nervous or not giving your fears a chance.
