Just a post to welcome all the freshers coming to Leeds in September!
Today was results day, and I hope you all got what you wanted and are looking forward to coming to Leeds. Congratualtions on finding the LGBT too - we are one of the unions biggest and most active societies and do loads of social and political things throughout the year.
if you fancy meeting the people that haunt the boards, go to the introduce yourself thread and say hi if you fancy.
If you have any questions don't hesitate to private message me, or add me to your MSN - johnjigglypuff@gmail.com - I am John, the co-=chair of the society.
You can also email us at luu.lgbt@leeds.ac.uk
I really look forward to meeting you in September - Until then, have fun for what is left of the summer and see you in September!

Ignore them 2, they r the committee pets, we've not quite got them trained yet! :oP
Anyways,
Hey Freshers!
I'm Nic. Co-events officer with the lovely Laura. We plan all the socials such as cinema trips, bowling trips, pub crawls etc for you to come along to all year long. I'm also the chair of the LGBT political assembly, who fight for lgbt rights and inssues within the university union (see the political assembly section of the forum).
If any of you want to know anymore information about what events we run and/or the assembly, don't hesistate to get in contact with me at any of the following addresses :o) Same goes if you want any1 to talk to during the madness of freshers week.
Take care, have a gr8 summer & hopefully cya in september! :o)
Love,
Nic xxx

In case you haven't noticed, Nic likes talking about the Assembly. In fact, Nic just likes talking in general, but she's a total sweetheart.
I'm Alice -- I'm not on the committee, but I live with aforementioned Nic and Men's Officer Joe, and you'll no doubt see me around. Feel free to add me to MSN (halsey@ntlworld.com) whether you're fit or not as I know all too well what it's like to live and study in a strange new city. (And I hope to God you poor souls aren't living in Tetley Hall.)
I talk about the assembly alot cos its important and instrumental in helping us get a better deal out of the union and to get the same rights as other students... not cos i just like talking.
Like I said before, if any of you want information about the events/ assembly/ general stuff 2 do with the first few weeks of uni or in an exceptional case... information on anything wierd found in flat E2.2 at Clarence Dock (i can explain most of it & return strange items to their owner) e-mail me or add me 2 messenger :o)
Love Nic (again) xxx

But remember, it's not the assembly that is instrumental, its the suppor tof ordinary students wanting to make a difference that will really make an impact.

Likewise if any of you poor souls are living in catered accommodation and want Alice's Tried and True 'how to get as much free food and not get scurvey' information sheet.
Alice, and everyone else really.... Its the home situation - things looked really bad at home and i thought i might have to divide my uni time and home time up, which leaves LGBT responsibilities a tad skew wiff. As things stand though it's looking okay and people on the committee have told me they think it's important i stay and carry on doing the things i've been doing on committee. I think i can do the things i said i would do when i was elected to the position and a few nasty emails which i overreacted to wont change that. Back and fighting! Plus i'm in a job share with Joe and everyone knows the situation now anyways... thanks to Adz and Rich for the support. Nic's pasty element admittedly helped.
Ainsleys best! If ya need 2 talk Dave, u can talk 2 me... plus we r livin like 2mins away from u. Our part of Woodhouse is THE gay village of Leeds, YAY!!!! Am thinking street parties n stuff.

In spite of our past differences, I am genuinely glad you aren't stepping down. While I might not agree with all of your opinions, you certainly are a vociferous committee member, and a great balance to the qualities Joe puts in as joint Men's Officer.
Lol, I have to say, considering this is a thread for freshers, there seems to be a distinct lack of posts from freshers!
Anyway, even better just means I can be the first!
Hey to everyone, lol, I should be up there in...let's see, TWO WEEKS! And I can't wait (Oh God, now I really DO sound like a fresher... ) Gotta say after spyng on you all here on the forum I'm liking the sound of the society. Seems like it should be a well good laugh!
Looking forward to joining and I guess I'll start seeing a few of you around in a few weeks...!

Oh, I'm Ant by the way. Sorry, my account is still pending and I'm too thick to sign my name apparently...
Baha and now someone else has posted I don't feel so scared to! Another newbie here... and indeed I also look forward to hopefully seeing some of you pretty soon.
YAY! Freshers have finally posted! *does a happy dance*
Hey 2 both of ya!
Glad ur not scared, we r nice & don't bite (unless ur payin 4 that service... but we wont go in2 that on here) You'll probably meet most of us on the stall at the societies fair in the riley smith hall (its in the union buildin... u learn where that is quickest cos it contains booze! or maybe that just how i learnt where it wer so fast) on the 22nd & 23rd of Sept, basically come along take a look at us n either run away screaming or join up, after that all the events will be kicking off & u'll get to meet everyone.
Hopefully ya movin in will go smoothly (wotever u do make sure u bring a stock of alcohol, pack of straws & a plastic storage box for the movin in weekend) & we'll get 2 meet ya soon!
In the meanwhile if you want any more information or just 2 chat in general add me 2 messenger.
Nic xx

Shall we warn the freshers about The New Penny now, or later?
Moving-in tip: fairy lights, a pretty rug, a couple of cushions, music, candles, a sheet of fabric on the walls and a pretty potted plant instantly make your room look less like a prison cell and more like a cosy place to be.
Your halls freshers events, if they organise them, will most likely be crap. But you'll get drunk and get to know your flatmates. If your hall doesn't organise something, then no need to worry -- try and round up everyone to go to the pub (there's hardly a shortage in Leeds) and buy a huge bottle of Morrinov for afterwards. And if you don't drink, you'll witness lots of secrets and shameful behaviour and be entertained too.
Anyway, ask if you have any more questions. We're a nice bunch of people, and I look forward to seeing you at Fresher's Fayre. (One day after I get back from America! Look for the jetlagged one.)

New Penny...see, now I'm curious! Hehe, it's weird to think I'm a fresher...I just know these two weeks are gonna go so slowly...
Well yes, if you want to give handjobs to old men, then run to the new penny as soona as you arrive. Someone took me to karaoke at the Bridge a couple of weeks ago, can we do the scene tour on a thursday so that people get to see the pure comedy of a massive pissed lesbian singing It's Oh So Quiet by Bjork?

Last week I went to the New Penny (not by choice) and the bouncer said i was lovely and stroked my face :( He wouldn't let me back in though. I wouldn't have let me in though, i was pretty out of it.
I hate New Penny. It's so bad even I don't find it funny.
The New Penny is slightly scary on first impressions n u do find sum wierdo's in there, but if u like sumwhere that knows it aint great n dun pretend 2b where the ppl arent up their own arses, the pennys actually pretty decent. Plus u can get wasted there, make a tit of urself on karoke & no1 will take piss outta u for it... thank god, i made an arse of myself last wed.

Aw! Steve has a boyfriend!
And what do you mean, 'not by choice'? Unless someone physically dragged you in there or kidnapped you, that is.
I can't comment on the New Penny. It scared the hell out of me when I was a naive fresher (some guy having a wank in the mirror on the dancefloor) but I haven't been back since. I do like karaoke at The Bridge, though. Alberto and I do a cracking rendition of 'Summer Nights'.

O God. Think I can safely say I'm pretty scared already Hehe!
Don't be 2 scared, Leeds locals r proper wierd but they wont harm u, they r 2 busy obsessing over themselves 2 think about harming another person. Ur pretty safe... just stand back watch them & laugh at them :o)

If Nic will let me, I think I'd like to lead it, for old times sake!! :)
Whatcha say Nic?
Already gone thru it & planned order that we r gonna do the bars in, time of meeting & everything is sorted on a time scale that will let us fit everything in, plus I've already been approached by someone wanting to lead it and agreed with them that they could do it. Sorry.

Margaret it is then Yay!!! - The New Penny is pretty quaint, although a wrecking ball would really complement that chic avant garde decor on their slimy piss-stained walls!
If you want anymore information about travel in Leeds check out: http://www.britinfo.net/taxis/TBXBP28050C.htm
For reviews & information about pubs/clubs/bar/restraunts/entertainment have a nose around on: www.itchyleeds.co.uk or invest in an itchy guide, they cost bout £3.75 but are worth every bit of it.
If ur living at Clarence Dock, expect taxi's 2 take the piss when taking u home. If ur going to walk back at night alone, safest way is by walking down lower briggate 2 the Tetleys Brewery and walking along the side of that keeping the Jurys Inn on ur left hand side (its well lit) crossing the main road and walkin down along side of the Royal Armouries and cutting inbetween the main armouries building & weaponry court in2 the car park n walkin across that (all well lit & on CCTV) Always keep ur keys held in ur hand n sticking through ur fingers if ur walkin back there alone & most importantly DON'T ever be tempted to walk down the calls over the bridge and down to the dock on the water side... its dark, theres no CCTV & people have been mugged down there. (Not meaning 2 scare ya, just lettin ya know so ya can stay safe)
If u sign up for a student Barclaycard at Freshers Fayre make sure, that whoever has signed u up has actually listened 2u & not ticked the box sayin u want card protection if u dont want it... it happened 2 me n it got messy & expensive.
Also at freshers fayre take complete advantage of the free stuff, u can pick up enough pens & bottle openers to last your entire stay at university, if they've got caffine pills (they did last year) try 2 get as many packs as possible cos they'll keep ya going after nights out etc... u hardly get 2 sleep in ur first month & stock up on the free mints 2... they r particularly helpful if u don't make it home n r lackin a toothbrush b4 lectures. Oh & the rape alarms that police give out, get one to keep urself safe & a back up in case first un breaks, also get a few more in case u live in a block with an annoying flat, u can pull the pins out & launch them grenade styleee in2 their flat via open windows/doors & leg it... its evil but bluddy funny.

Now ya see, THAT'S the stuff freshers need to know! Lmao.
