Hey guys. This email is a little longer than I like to send out, but it's all important stuff, so bear with me!
Cinema Trip - Tuesday 18th The speed-dating that was planned for tuesday has been put back till november, but in its place we're having another trip to the cinema, this time to see the new Wallace and Gromit film! The film starts at 20:40, so meet us in the cinema before half past, or at Parky Steps for 20:15
LGBT Assembly Meeting - Friday 21st The second meeting of the LGBT Assembly will be taking place in Meeting Room 2 of the ARC (upstairs in the union) at 5pm on Friday. This is a great opportunity to get involved in LGBT politics and really make a difference both within the union and on a larger scale. Hopefully see lots of you there!
Tea and Cake Otley Run - Saturday 22nd As a bit of a spin off from the usual pub crawl, we will be following the Otley Road into town, stopping off in cafes along the way for a brew and some cake! A great way to socialise without getting drunk and embarressing yourself! Keep checking the website or the forum for times and venues!
NUS Winter Conference - 26th-27th November 2005 Just a quick note to let you know we will be sneding 4 delegates to the NUS LGBT Campaign Winter Conference in Coventry. More details on manifestos and elections in the next email.
Trans Officer Elections As you have probably noticed, at present we have no Trans representation on the committee. We aim to rectify this by holding by-elections in November. Anyone can stand for the position, trans or not, as long as you feel you can make a positive impact on the role and represent our trans members. At the bottom of this email is a few words from Claire, our current trans advisor, for anyone interested in standing for election.
That's all from me for now! Coffee Hour, 12-2, in the ARC as usual! Bye x
Rich Communications Officer

This is Claire the interim Trans Advisor with a few words about the upcoming Trans Rep Election which is soon to be held within the LGBT Soc.
Since the Society changed its Constitution in the Spring of 2004 to include Trans in the title there has not been a full time student member to fill the post of Trans Rep. A year ago the then Committee very kindly invited me to hold the honorary position of Trans Advisor to the Society while the Representative position remained vacant.
Regrettably no-one felt able to stand for this position when the elections for the present Committee were held, back in the Spring of this year, so I have continued in my advisory role. As a life member of Leeds Uni I am not able to fill the position as all voting members of the Committee must be current full time students. It is very much hoped that a current student or students will come forward to stand in the election to be held for this post in November.
The position will be a full member of the Committee with voting rights.
While I have been Trans Advisor most of my input has been concerned with communication and publicity representation issues. These have primarily involved just making sure that correct wording is used in notices and suchlike, although there has been a small amount of input on the detail and subtlety of some Trans issues. Also I have been available in the event of any member of the LGBT needing confidential advice or support with respect to possibly feeling that they are Trans or perhaps questioning their gender identification.
Ideally there would be a choice of Trans students standing for this post, but it is accepted that this is unlikely to be the case. Also it is important to remember that even if you feel you are a Trans person and would like to fill this role, it is not required or necessary to come out as such if you stand in the election, although it is possible that doing so might put you in a position where you were seen to be the most suitable candidate.
What is really important is that anyone who feels they may be able to take on this responsibility should have a strong commitment to supporting Trans people and their representation issues within the society, as well as hopefully having some connection with the issues in their own experience, which may involve having known one or more Trans people or perhaps having some professional interest from the point of view of their degree such as Counselling or Legal Rights.
It is not immediately necessary to have an extensive knowledge of the great variety of Trans issues which may arise, but it is hoped that the successful candidate will be motivated to develop the base that they come from. I am most happy to give whatever input and support which prospective candidates may feel that they need in order to be able to write up a manifesto to stand in this election. I shall remain available for consultation by the future Trans Rep should they feel at any time that they need such assistance.
Here's hoping that we will see a variety of candidates.
Good Luck to all who may stand.
Regards,
Claire"
