I have just been to see Pride and Prejudice at la Cinematique and it was FABULOUS!

The cinematography was excellent, as was the acting from Keira Knightly, Judi Dench, Matthew MacFadeyn (hunk), Brenda Blethyn and Kelly Reilly.

The music was fab too and I want the soundtrack!!

If you haven't been to see it go - I have read the book, but the film is excellent even if you hadn't read the story. It has great pace and is funny and dramatic and might even make you cry!

There are so many things I want to see at the cinema at the moment... this, Howl's Moving Castle, Broken Flowers, Corpse Bride...

Anyone got a brief review of any of those yet?

WHAT?!?!

I must admit I enjoyed the film, but as an Austen adaptation it's as poor as it can get. There's boundless passion everywhere (not in Austen), lots of emphasis on landscape and nature (not in Austen), cheesy jokes added to the already brilliant dialogue, and the manners and the postures are all WRONG!!

Not to say the guy who plays Mr Darcy seems to be in a rush to deliver his lines and go to the toilet to solve his constipation, and Keira Knightley is NOT mature enough as an actress to play Elizabeth Bennet convincingly.

I think this is the version of Pride and Prejudice made by the makers of Bridget Jones and Love Actually for those who loved Bridget Jones and Love Actually. In short, well made, but appealing for a certain audience who want a good flick, preferably an easy love story, and are not very concerned about the film's fidelity to the original material.

For those of you who love Austen and her work, get the 1995 BBC adaptation on DVD. It's longer, but it's much better made, and it shows much more respect to the work it's based on.

Sorry, John!!!! You know what I can be like when Austen is concerned.

I think though, Al, that this is a good adaptation of the novel and you have to admit, the cinematography was excellent. I also think that Matthew MacFadeyn did a great job of Mr. Darcy,

I haven't seen the BBC adaptation, although I would really like to. But this film has to squeeze a story that could be spread of many hours (such as the BBC adapt.) into just two. I thought it was great.

The cinematography was excellent! And I like the shot with the tree and the people walking by it.... it reminded me of the adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, to which it might have been paying hommage.

Everybody is entitled to his/her opinion. I didn't like the way Mr Darcy was played because he was made dull and just mournful most of the time, when in fact he should have been proud and arrogant at times. The actor is gorgeous, but his range of emotions is just sooooo restricted.

And how is it a good adaptation exactly?

Boy, I've got the BBC one on DVD. Come and watch it sometime!! Colin Firth is priceless as Mr Darcy.

All I can say is.... How lovely is the guy that plays Mr Darcy!!! Made the film all the more worthwhile! I must say its one of the only film that I've been able to stand Keira Knightly and possibly even liked her... I've not read the book yet (its on my to do list) but I thought the film was really good.

I've seen Howl's moving castle too which I thought was an amazing film, probably better than Spirited away, if you've seen it that is. Even if you're not really into that type of film I'd highly reccommend it!

Alberto "And how is it a good adaptation exactly

It's a good adaptation because the book came alive for me. Film, like text, is to be appreciated subjectively. It worked for me as an adaptation of the book.

Whilst I have not seen teh BBC adaptation, if the film had simply condensed that into 2 hours surely it would have been a waste of time.

I have read the novel several times over the past 10 years and I got something out of this film. I think many other people will have too, perhaps people who wouldn't normally have bothered watching or would never have thought of picking up an Austen book. Surely that is a good thing?!

Anyway, Bleak House is on tonight, and I am looking forward to that!
