Dear gays and gayettes, Sorry for anyone who thought that the content of this post may be more exciting than in fact it is!
Last Wednesday, I fell quite ill about 8.00ish and fell asleep for a couple of hours. I went back to bed about 1.00, still feeling pretty rough, and realising I had flu, (I had the horrible feeling of being weightless and sinking, I've yet to rationalise this...). On Thursday, I felt very bad, and just thought that it was regular flu. I felt better come that evening and watched Lock, Stock and Two smoking barrels. I then went to bed at about 11.00
Here comes the crunch. I became incredibly breathless, and felt more scared than I had been for a very long time. I shouted my housemates who came to try and calm me down, thinking that it was a panic attack. I can't remember anything about the next three hours as I was hallucinating about being kidnapped by Phil Mitchell and some heavies, and being very ill in a weird bed with some cruel doctors. At least I think that's what happened.
When I woke up at about 2.30 in the morning, I had been diagnosed with a fairly severe pneumonia. I left the LGI yesterday, but have to take the next fortnight easy and not do anything strenuous, so I've come back to Manchester.
Now why have I posted this? Certainly not to gain any sympathy or commiserations. However, because this is going to be the coldest winter for the last forty years, I thought reliving my experiences may wake people up to the risks of not wrapping up warm, NOT going out clubbing and getting plastered in only a t-shirt etc. Be sensible! Sorry to go on, but it was one of THE worst experiences I've had to endure, and I hate to think of other people going through the same thing.
[Fellas - If you know what it is, I had to have a catheta inserted for over 48 hours. If you don't, look it up. If that doesn't put you off, nothing will!]
Sorry to go on, but there you go! I hope everyone is well and good, and hopefully I may see people in the next Curious in February, (I'm probably in Mancs till January now, further putting off oppurtunity to meet people I've not yet had the honour of meeting, and would very much like to).
Good lord I'm rambling! Well, hope this may interest someone, Love to all etc, Steven. xxx

I bought myself a big huge smart coat. It's a bit Mafioso, but it keeps me warm. it's suprising the difference in the severity of the cold here to that up in Hipperholme where the school I teach at is. It's bloody freezing on them there dales. And it's so foggy. Once you get up there, at 7am it's impossible to more than 100 yards ahead!
Anyway, get that heating on and get your scarves, hats, gloves and deer stalkers out! I am off to buy a big wolly hat on Wednesday. I don't give a shiny ****e if they don't suit me!

Well flu is a viral infection bourne through droplets such as sneezing, coughing, dirty hands, the virus on the door you just opened or on the keyboard you just used. Pneumonia is a secondary infection that latches onto the lungs when you've already had an established problem, so Steven would have had something that led to the pneumonia...
The US NIA (National Institute for Health) is great for information on this kind of thing if you're interested... Pneumonia Flu
So they're not really the same, but you often get pneumonia after flu which is why they're so frequently associated with one another.
Pneumonia is any infection that actually effects the lungs as opposed to the bronchus and trachea. Although when you have a cold you may feel like you are bringing up your lungs it is never that deep down, even the flu doesn't actually effect the lungs themselves. Whereas good old Pneumonia does, that is why it is so serious.
P is right that Pneumonia is usually a secondary infection as the bodies immune defence for the lungs is very powerful so your immune system needs a pritty big knock for an infection to spread that far. If you have the symptoms GO TO THE HOSPITAL. not to put a downer on anyone but at work i had a patient who was fine on the friday (just a bit of a cold) and was dead by saturday night, he had Pneumonia.
Thanks for all the nice comments folks, it's appreciated. I'm afraid I don't know what caused it, all I know is that it wasn't a nice experience. I'd rather bed Kilroy-Silk...OK, there are limits, but It was still horrible. Hope that everyone's safe and well, and I'll see people at Curious in February! Steven. xxx
