Currently the university policy is that only exams have to be marked anonymously in all university departments. Basically wanted to ask you all this. Would you support anonymous marking on all exams, essays and coursework, in all university departments?
Also, what are your reasons for supporting/not supporting it? As usual vote n post

Basically I'd support anonymous marking, because I've dealt with several complaints from LGBT students about comments lecturers have made about LGBT people and their issues, and these students have often felt discriminated against but not wanted to say anything in case their marks were affected as a result. Personally I think that no1 should have to put up with discrimination or feel like they have to in order to gain a qualification. Especially when they are paying for their education.

Although this is not an unconditional one, I fully recognise at times essays can be immensely peronal and deal with issues however, as a third year my essays and coursework are suppossed to have a lot of thought and time spent on developing lines of inquiry. As part of this I talk to my lecturers about what I want to pursue and due to this they can identify my work even if it was submitted anonymously. Yes the system isn't perfect but although in an ideal world anonymity would be fairer, the only way to ensure that would be to have no contact with your tutors/lecturers regarding your work and that would hurt everyone.
All assessed work should be second marked within the department and they should pick up on any discrepencies.
I'm not saying that abuse doesn't happen and the measures that are used to prevent couldn't do with tightening but I think truly anonymous marking is impossible due to the involvement of tutors/lecturers in our academic work

I agree.
Anonymous marking is a great, great idea for work that can be treated in such a way. (Exams, assessed work for modules that are taken by a large number of people.) However in my department (Geography) much of our work is marked by a personal tutor who will have 10 or so students, and our dissertations are marked by a personal supervisor who knows the specific topic we're doing. There's no point in anonymous marking. My tutor could spot my writing style from a mile away.
Basically, proughan said it with far more clarity than me; I agree with him completely.
I voted no. It's pretty sh*t to think that there are academics at the university who are prepared to lower themselves by attacking LGBT people, but I think that if anonymous marking exists, it prevents people from finding out who anti-LGBTers are, which may do more long term damage. I think that it's better to try and identify individuals and take them through the complaints proceedure - that way it can be hopefully stopped in the future. Although I can understand the depth of feeling against being marked by homophobes. Steven. xxx

That is always assuming there are any. I really can't imagine any of my lectures knocking my grade down because they think i might be gay. And it's certainly not like i'd go around telling them. I have to say I find it a little hard to believe they'd actually give a **** if they knew anyway.
