Our Anual General Meeting (AGM) is coming up VERY soon! This is where we review the past year and elect the new committee for 2006/2007. As well as this, the AGM is the only time the society's constitution can be altered.
The positions currently available on the committee are Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Mens Officer, Womens Officer, Trans Officer, Events Officer, International Officer and Communications Officer. You can read more about these roles here: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/union/socs/lgb/committee.html
For anybody interested in standing for a position on the committee we will be running an information workshop on Thursday 16th February in the ARC at 8pm, after which we'll be heading down to Mission to de-stress if anyone wants to join us!
To run for a position you will need to write a short manifesto detailing your reasons for wanting to be on the committee. This will need to be emailed to us by 12noon on Friday 24th February. Help writing manifestos will be available at the meeting on 16th if needed.
The society's current constitution is a set of guidelines to ensure the good running of the society. It can be read here: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/union/socs/lgb/constitution.pdf The AGM presents members with the opportunity to add to, change or remove any part of the constitution after a vote. Again, we need people to email any proposed changes to us by 12noon on Friday 24th February.
The actual AGM will take place on Thursday 2nd March in the ARC at 7pm. It will be chaired by current society chair Alison and gives you the chance to both get involved with and make a difference to the running of your society. As well as elections for the new committee and constitutional ammendments the current committee are also required to make reports of the last year.
After the AGM we will again be heading down to Mission (we love that place!) to unwind and congratulate the new committee.

My sincere apologies to everybody who expected to see me in the Arc yesterday evening at for the information workshop. Although I mentioned I was going to the meeting, I had to call it off eventually. A combination of personal and job related reasons prevented me from joining you for the evening. I do look forward to joining you some other time. After going through my schedule for this year, I realised that I won't be available to work for the Committee, though I had initially expressed my interest in running for a position.
Committee correct me if i am mistaken, but can voting members make by-proxy votes, if they are unable to attend the AGM? If this is the case, i would ure these members to do this!...
We didn't have it last year so I dont see why we should this year. This is getting complicated enough without proxy voting... We need people at the AGM with their student cards so that we can check them against the member list in person.

I'd refer to the constitution on this, but the society has never allowed 'by proxy' voting as far as I am aware. This complicates an already complicated process, especially seeing as you'l be using the complicated system of voting anyway.

The constitution doesn't say it is or it isnt allowed. We can discuss it at Friday's committee meeting and make a decision democratically. I can't see how it would work though, there'd be no way of regulating it.

I think it'd be great to have proxy votes but realistically, I can't see how it would be regulated in this instance. Bit of a shame that if you don't attend, you don't have a say, but that's just the way it is.
