LGBTI-can't believe how complicated this is
Permalink

Hey guys,
Was just surfing the internet looking at information about Sikhism and homosexuality, and was shocked to notice that the society is gonna have to change name again - the term lgbti (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex) is starting to be used! When will the madness stop? What is intersex? Does that really count as an 'alternative' sexuality?

I am not the expert on this. But I think that when we use the letter 't' in our name, that also refers to people who self define as 'intersex' for whatever reason.

However sexuality has nothing, in my opinon, to do with the 't' part of our society, because gender doesn't determine sexuality, and neither does being intersex.

The reason, I think both 't' and 'intersex' people should be included in the LGB campaign is because, as the wonderful Claire so rightly hit the nail on the head, like us they are 'queer' - not in terms of their sexuality, but in terms of there difference from larger society and the way they are treated by supposedly 'normal' people.

Erm, maybe I am wrong, but thats my opinion.

Yeah, the T does cover intersex people who self-define as transgender.

Gender is actually part of sexuality. Sexuality is (primarily) formed from gender and sexual orientation -- a gay man and a straight woman both have the same sexual orientation, but what makes one heterosexual and the other homosexual is their gender. That's why gender issues are part of sexuality issues.

(And for many many other reasons)

Yes it does get complicated, but intersex is a very serious thing. Many people have been born with out any one being sure which sex they are.

Some time operations are given to make the person in to the sex a Dr belives they are, only at a later date to find out a mistake has been made.

Can you imagine being bought up beliving you are a girl to find out you are a boy?

If you would like to ask me any thing about this please mail me stacy@transliving.co.uk I am co ordination of translivinginternational

the section on trans issues on the NUS website is pathetic. it suggests that transgenderism is synonymous with being intersexed, and that's the end of it.

with such misinformed, sketchy rubbish, how can transgender students be represented in any way whatsoever? besides, their lgb campaign cannot exclude trans students who do not selfdefine as l, g, or b because their intersex definition of transgenderism contradicts their view of trans issues entirely.

for this reason i have put my name to the trans inclusion motion at this summer's conference. hmmm...

and equally important is the fact that sexuality is part of gender. in my gender role as a man, i am expected to reserve sexual contact exculsively for women. when i deviate from that and have sex with men, i am breaking a gender rule, doing precisely what is expected of the 'other' gender. i use gender in quotation marks purely because it is a myth that the gender system consists of two polar opposites. like sexuality, gender is a continuum. actions and words are usually deemed either masculine or feminine by association with one of two hypothetical gender types, but the definition of these types changes almost on a daily basis. i'm just waiting for david beckham to turn up to a match in a pink tutu. and i hope one day we can bend gender and blend gender as easily as we mix and match our clothes.
