hi everyone, i am starting leeds uni this september and am looking for some advice on the best halls/housing. i am 20 and a lesbian. Any advice? cheers!
Well, I think it could purely be luck if you are going through the university, all they ask is what time you go to bed, how messy you are, and what hobbies you have...
But, this year it seems as though there are quite a few gay girls knocking around Lupton in Headingly, but I think it is all purely coincidence!
The LGBT Assembly have been doing lots of works this year to ensure that discrimination in University Accommodation is properly dealt with, so I hope that no matter what halls you choose, you will be safe.
However, I have noooo idea what halls are most popular with our girls.

There are no 'best' halls for a lesbian. You're bound to find quite a few LGBT members in most halls and you may well be surprised at how accepting people are. I'm not saying incidents don't take place, but at my hall of residence there were about six or seven of us who were out and we got no hassle about it from anyone.
What are you looking for? Catered/self-catering? Do you want an en-suite? Do you want to be close to university or would you rather be in Headingley or the city centre? What about internet access?
You may well find most people will tell you the best hall is the one they stayed in! (Of course, I can't recommend my hall, Tetley, as it's being demolished this summer!)
is there not a whole thread devoted to this topic somewhere?!
yea im sure it is coincidence, there were NO lesbians around lupton last year apart form me..as far as i know...lol not impressed i chose the wrong year rly didnt i!
well aparently as a whole a lot of lgbt seemed to be living at clarence dock, forgot how the poll turned out, there was one here somewhere. although clarence dock is a lil far out for most people
i think the best bet if ur worrying about discrimination in halls is to pick one close to university. That way should any such incidents arise it'd be better than one of the further away ones, where you may feel a bit isolated if u encounter discrimination at the halls as ur far from the people u have made friends with at other places

My advice would be pick which halls sound best to you. There's no particular halls where lesbians live. I lived at Tetley last year with Alice and they gays find each other, trust me we did this year lupton seems to be the place to be. But you can always change halls when you get here. Many lesbians live in clarence daock as its nice accomodation and close to the scene but its your choice!

I'm an ex moor granger, but also I know one of the current subwardens and he said right at the beginning of the academic year that due to Tetley closing down they were planning on having a huge party that all previous Tetlyites would be invited to. They had already started budgeting for it so it looks incredibly probable that it is going to happen. Will let you know more details as and when I get them.
Regarding best halls
Seriously read through the accomodation list and see if one agrees with you, Lupton is the furthest out reasonable walking distance though I had a few friends from Oxley who walked in and out every day. Seriously bear in mind what you want out of halls, catered or self catering, whether you can afford a bus pass, music rooms, sports facilities. And even though so much has been done with accomodation services regarding LGBT students, if something isn't right then you can always move into a different halls. After a couple of weeks there are spaces everywhere as people either move between accomodations or move into a house with friends.
Wow! moor grange is definitly the place to be . Thats where i lived, i'm sure ive probably written it before. I heard about the big ball thing but i'm sad there not holding it at tetley because i really want to see my room again!

It's true about moving halls, I did it! It's really hassle free to move, (providing you have someone to help move all of your stuff. hehe ), but most likely you'll find a fair few lesbianic people knocking about anywhere.
I've chatting to my house mates (also ex moor grangers) And we was wonderin which room you lived in ? if that isn't too personnal. We lived in 2, 8 and the best room 10 lol. Well i should say Joe got over excited and is really curious.

hey gem, i doubt anyone could get excited about living in Joe's room last year, it was sooo small.
Not like my double burton grange boudoir once louise ran off to america. nothing to do with me i promise.
bye bye tetley and 5 a day carb portion meals!
chips, pasta, cheese, bread and pudding with chocolate custard.
hmm, plus dear fellow tetley dwellers - why did we all get given double rooms?! well you, me and john. they must have known...
I'd agree that anywhere near town is best for sapphic settlements. Morrisons, Wilko...no, really, surely being closer to Queens Court et al is a bonus.
I lived in Moor Grange 14, you know the one downstairs with the fireescape for a view. They moved in new furniture after my year so my lovely wardrobe with full length mirror dissapeared. :(
Woodhouse, room W58. Scenic view of cigarette butts on the groups and some cans of Stella if I'm lucky, but able to see into the dining hall which was a plus as I could see which items of carby goodness they were serving that day. (Pasta and chips with bread rolls? Mmmmm.)
It's a good job they'll demolish the place considering the glow stars attached to the ceiling and words like 'minge' carved into my desk when drunk are not to everyone's taste.
Memories... *sniff*... of course, my ex-roommate who was obsessed with Coldplay got a double room to herself with balcony and large fireplace. Hmph.
After Paul left 2002-2003, I moved into his room, 14, decided the view was rather **** and then moved upstair into the infinitely better room 10 for the rest of the year!!
Teley hall Moor grange must have been a gay hotspot....but can say the food did nothing for me!
You moved from a single to a double? 10 is a shared room if you got it as a single you lucky person! the only problem was how far the bathroom was ! the best was the trap door down to 8 gosh we had fun with that. Thats really cool are you a medic then? we found half a timetable down the back of my desk draws.
Tetley food did nothing for anyone ! chips nd pasta mmm my fav lol x

Nah, it was still a double room, my roommate was great (i was the medic) we had so much fun spying on ppl and figuring out the trap door...and sitting on the roof by getting through the skylight in the room at the very top during the summer!
So you moved in after me...hmmm i think I may have showed you guys to that room, was one of you a scouser? (happened to be in Leeds and as a favour to a mate took moor grangers to their rooms- but honestly was wondering who had our ace room next)...I was the small chinese person!
I also feel sorry for the person who had the boiling hot radiator right next to the bed that you couldn't turn off ever, so was very tropical all the time!
Sorry guys but it seems we got the last decent food at Tetley, every evening meal was family service which they changed for the year after us. I must admit there were occasional *interesting* combinations but generally it was pretty good. The sunday roasts were fantastic.
breakfasts were the best food for a 100 people and only 20 turn up. Breakfast used to consist of cereal, a bowl of yoghurt and fruit, toast and also a cooked breakfast occasionally. Used to last me through to the evening meal.
think we shoould have a gay tetley reunion. All gay tetleyers past and present.
Erm i'm the scouser! so i guess you showed me to my room! i don't really remember very much, i was pretty upset that day.
I had the bed with the boiling hot radiator, well i think my room mate had one too! i used to love at 12.30 when it went off!. We removed the window blocks tho so we tended to have the window open most of the time lol.
Figured out the trap door on the first day using the next door neighbours screw driver and the guys that lived beneath climbing up lol.
We used to use the fire escape to revise on!
One of you was a scouser ? i think jayne has thing for scousers!
There was cooked breakfast everyday with variations on that daily, i hated breakfast everything was stale and cooked in butter yuk plus it meant getting out of bed and i don't like doing that.
A gay tetley reunioun would be cool!

A gay tetley reunioun would be cool!
'Cooked' breakfasts included:
Mushrooms (covered with so much grease they shone), hash browns (incinerated into nothingness) roast potatoes (usually incinerated into nothing and left over from last night's dinner), sausages or bacon (grease bombs), fried or scrambled eggs that were grossly undercooked or grossly overcooked, or the 'healthy option' which was a huge pot of cereal that had festered there for goodness knows how long, some tinned grapefruit segments and possibly a manky banana or apple.
Any good fruit would be nabbed by a girl called Kay from main block who would get up at the crack of dawn then take about 50 oranges and 40 bananas from breakfast and hoard them in her room until they were mouldy.
The only good thing was the hot chocolate machine.
Family service was crap. If you couldn't get there by about 6.30pm you'd miss out on dinner, and be forced to grovel with the kitchen staff for some cold leftovers of what was usually something like congealed pasta bake with a bread roll and Manchester Tart with cold custard. And don't get me started on the salmon wellington they had for one of the formal dinners...
The food was horrendous! Have to agree. I can't believe it was ever good, esp after the snot soup and the soup consisting mainly of....salt. Eww.
Man the fire escape! It was cool in the summer, but the loos were grim and the amount of times we thought someone would be carted off to A+E from the bannister breaking after millions of us sliding down to dinner!
My roommate is a scouser, she definitely had the best view but then again she was the lazy arse to didn't have anywhere to be in the mornings and got the opportunity to stare out of the window....
Think we should create a gay tetley reunion, or gatecrash the end of year thing....hehehe
The banister seemed to get used most when people where tipsey! and forgot that the banister had an end. Don't think nay of us broke it tho. We also used the stairs for sleeping bag races.
And the beautiful cleaners (aka bev and anne) who would moan on a daily basis that the kitchen was too dirty for them to clean. But they did tell us your year was worse so i suppose thats a bonus! lol They also used to moan at me 'cause they said they had to hoover on a specific day.

Gosh id like to know whos mattress u used to bobsleigh in the snow with! we took some outside to do somersalts on! but only ones people weren't sleeping on.
Did you try it right from the atttic room, that was a little scary to say the least but still fun!
You guys missed the table we got put on the landing! but we used it just to drink on wwwwwoohhhhhhhoooooo!!! to the annoyance of the rest of the house, well some1 should have told them that thats what mondays and thursday are for! hehehe!
o yer and i was talking to my house mate joe (he lived in the room next to the basement and laudry room, aka mg2) he thinks you may have taken him to his room as well.

Alice you were in W58?? I know the girl who's got your room now, she's a wee bit frightening. Loud as hell, convinced every man she meets fancies her and much MUCH too fond of tickling people's tummies... Ew.

Just like me, then!
Oh, ask one of the Subwardens about Izzy, the girl who lived in W5 in 2003/4. You'll never look at newspaper in the same way again.
