And award for best plug goes to lol well il be there with bells on..............................................................................................................................................ok spandex hot pants and nipple tassels
Erm , well i gald there is now a night in the uni soon but i think that the wording in the poster is more than tactless, YAY for a gay night in the union, but do we have to go back the the old days of "were here, were queer!!!!" sequins and all with such an unsubtle poster. Sadly though i cant (for the moment) think of of anything that gets the point across better, but i do wish that there was. But to be honest its a step in the right direction and i will look forward too it, but i stull think curious was a better titile to be honest, seeing as it was subtle but not too ambiguous, where as "GAY NIGHT IN UNI" is just terible and may even prevoke. But what gets me the most is the "bring your hetro friends", it seems to be added as a some sort of crapy joke and as a feeble attempt to be politcaly correct, where as putting it in, to me, seems almost rude and not at all funny (i jsut dont see why it was added), every on knows what a gay night is and if you want to coem you want to come, so this insertion was so not needed. anyway my diatribe is now over, i hope someone sees my point finn
Nah, I like it, it's got a nice self-parodying DIY vibe to it and I don't think it's in any way aggressive or confrontational.
ed: just to add that I think the whoel point is that the days of "get used to it" are very much over... every one is used to it. Is this any different to calling a club G.A.Y?
Why should we be subtle and hush-hush about it? The days of cowering in dingy small clubs and dodgy areas are over, and it proudly announced that we're taking over a space not normally associated with gay nights.
Firstly In my opinion with the BNP on the rise through the sheer laziness of voters to take an actual interest in voting has led to a worrying stage of homosexual rights development we are on shakey ground at this point in time homophobia is on the rise accross europe, asia and america even australia home of the sydny mardi gras is having difficulties. This could lead to a u turn on homo rights.
Secondly Keeping the gay scene is important without it there will be even less of a support network out there for LGBTs and as a result we could find ourselves sat in yatses of squares surrounded by the BNP grunting away drinking tetleys. I do agree with Finn there is the risk of offending hetrosexuals but on another note i find bars having a sign outside saying gay friendly because they have an Homosexual or bisexual person behind the bar to be very offencive.
Conclusion BNP bad, Multiculturalism good, Gay scene EVIL but needed, Sraight scene good, Tetly good, Friendly bars Good but need to be aimed at all.
Is this even being run by the union, i would have though that if it was a LGBT event then we would be getting a share of the profits or that the union would but this dosnt seem to be the case........Who are we endorsing with our money? and if the union isnt getting any who is and why?
I think Mission is a novelty. Great to start out feeling comfortable with oneself if you have just come out.
I dont like the drug scene there, and after one semester I was bored of the music. However I think its important to have a "gay" scene (although mssion is full of straight ppl!) for somewhere safe to go without any looks or stares.
TGNATU (sounds like a Russian girl band!) is gonna be cool. I'm playing Salt'n'Peppa and James Brown and lots other nice musical treats to excite your ears.
Personally I have no problem with the name and am bored of this politically correct diatribe whenever the word 'Gay' is used to generically describe an LGBT night. Boring. So last year. Lets get on with it and have fun!
Whoop!

Nowhere is a hundred percent safe from looks or stares, and I've never felt comfortable in Mission. Anyone who isn't one hundred percent gay and apparently so is met with derision and I've never felt comfortable there. It's important to have gay spaces, but it's also important to gay up other spaces because if we don't make ourselves visible, how are we going to escape being a novelty? (I'm talking about 'straight' clubs and such, by the way, not snogging your boyfriend while walking through Little London at 11pm. That's just silly.)
And John, I completely agree with you. As per usual.
You should go to the sunday night evening at Mission. I can't remember what it's called, but it was a lot of fun this week (the first), and definitely not all the exact same music. Some of the same fun but with less Bewitched style rubbish!
Hey! WE all danced! You fail to recognize your friends' commitment to celebrating (and putting up with) whatever your favorite band of the moment happens to be! Though the gays at Mission don't like them, the DJ certainly at least plays it all the time when you ask (he's so sweet) so in way we can't really complain.
It couldn't possibly be that we're just scared of offending you by saying a bad word against the Monkeys!

And whats wrong with teltey chris? Its a good leeds drink!
I must say that I don't think the gay scene provides people with a support network. Quite the opposite. The scene is often elitist, drug-and-sex orientated and quite often alienates the people that need support and help the most.
I'm not against the gay scene. Just don't pretend it's anything more than it is.

Mission is whateva you want it to be in my opinion! its all personal choice! Same as everywhere! if you like it cool if you don't cool!
The gay scene is important to many people! although i do agree the pills and sex thing does bother me!(but it happens everywhere, just where smaller and everyone knows everyone or in another way has been with everyone) why can't people just have fun! I'm really prudish when it comes to drugs and sex! The scene is often a place to met your friends regardless of who lese id there just a meeting point in my opinion!
xx

Hello! could put something witty but i can't think of one!
I don't mind the gay scene. In fact I quite like it. But I do think it's elitist and drug and sex orientated. That opinion stems from having been going out on it for almost 7 years and working on it for 2 of them. I'm not saying my opinion is right. But I am justified to express it I think.

I have no idea what their issue is, I've been told by RAG that the assembly complained (about what was unclear). I was also told by the NUS LGBT Officer that he'd had a complaint (again I'm unsure what about) and I've also been told that all of the posters in the union were removed because of the lgbt assembly chair.
However I have had absolutely no contact from the lgbt assembly at all and when the flyers have been online for 3 weeks it seems absolutely insane that they wait till now to complain about them.
So much drama to raise a bit of money for charity!

Haha, I am quite surprised that I was Jeni's spellchecker as I was way more drunk! Last night was yet another example of why I don't drink that much!! But then it seems I make up for the lack of alcohol...
Chris finds it hard to believe I was worse at Curious. What do those who witnessed both think?
