What does thw LGBT assembly do?
The Assembly is a group of students working with the union representative to raise awareness of a LGBT issues, challenge discrimination of LGBT students within LUU/the University and promote equality for LGBT students. Due to the Assembly being politically focused and representative of LGBT students it is responsible for: · Running campaigns to raise awareness of LGBT issues · Proposing/writing motions to be sent to the Union Council regarding LGBT issues/needs · Educating about LGBT students needs and issues · Organising and running awareness events (e.g. workshops, fundraisers) · Fighting discrimination and promoting equality · Dealing with/advocating complaints about the union or university in a constructive manner · Providing welfare such as advice, information, referrals to the student support network, representation and/or advocating for LGBT students to the relevant services · Working with LGBT students, the union and university to ensure the smooth running of all of the above
The Assembly is ran by the Assembly Chair, who has been elected onto the Union Council (highest decision making body in the union, makes policy and controls the running of the union) as representatives of LGBT students and has the authority to act on behalf of them. The responsibilities of the assembly chair are: · To hold assembly meetings, which are open forums for discussing any problems LGBT students are having and how to deal with them · Oversee the running of the assembly · Represent/advocate on behalf of LGBT students to the union/university and represent/advocate on behalf the union/university to LGBT students · Organising elections and a delegation to go the NUS LGBT conference · Overseeing the use of the assembly campaign budget · Overseeing campaigns · Working with the society committee to represent LGBT students · Be the public face of the Assembly and the union with regards to LGBT issues
