The parts of Richard Young from the waist, downwards, on a cold April evening at Mission I would assume.

Ignore my last post in the Events section then. Let me know if you need any help organising this, guys! I'll be there, of course, but you might need a pair of hands to help.

Is it true that the committee have cancelled this event?? could a member of the committee please state their reasons for this??? surely an lgbt event, which they wouldnt have to do any work for would be a great advert for the lgbt, without any costs to the society??? its seems strange that the committee are unable or dare i say, unwilling to support its own members when they try to arrange an independant club night! what happened to being inclusive???

mucho love

Hey there, i'll answer your query as best as i can. Bare in mind i wasn't at the actual meeting, so might not be entirely accurate. Another committee member might need to clarify what i'm saying, which could be bollocks. Anyways -
I believe that the committee has decided not to support this event as if anything were to go wrong, it would be come back to us. We cancelled Curious earlier on in the year because of it's proximity to the exam period and thus for us to support another event at this time would be hypocritical. I believe cancelling our support for the event came in at a 7 to 1 majority with one abstention. This doesn't mean individually we do not support the event. Indeed, personally i am gonna try and get as many people as i possibly can to come along to this event, which, by the way, i think will be fantastic, and a great tribute to the amount of work Richard puts in to the society, both as an ordinary member and on the committee last year. I would urge everyone to come along as well - just because the event has not got the committee seal of approval doesn't mean sh*t, the event will go on, and hopefully be more successful than we could ever make it.

Please note the above is my opinion not necessarily the committee's! And last time i spoke to Rich the event was going ahead - i'm sure he'll tell us if anything changes!

One more thing I believe that this event was cancelled because of its impracticalities from a society perspective rather than any malice from the committee. Indeed there has been some suggestions that the committee have done this simply because they never organised the event... i don't believe this is the case and believe any future events proposed by other members would be taken into consideration. Indeed we are an inclusive society and will always do our best to represent our members. We have a meeting tomorrow in which i think this subject will crop up. Does anyone have any questions for the meeting that i can post answers to afterwards?

Never fear, despite interference from the committee this event is definitely happening with the full support of RAG who were very entusiastic about the potential of the night. Any profits will be donated to the Terrence Higgins Trust so please come along and support us!

There should be flyers and posters printed shortly now that all of the unnecessary beaurocracy has been dealt with!

Dave speaks much of the truth. Originally the night was booked for Curious, but as a committee and from feedback from the members it was decided that curious should be postponed until the start of next year. The booking was still there however and Richard saw a window of opportunity...

Cancelling the booking became a neccessity because of the course TGNATU is nothing to do with the LGBT society, and having it still in our name meant any repurcusions would ultimately end with us. Having been at the meeting i can honestly say it wasnt out of spite at all (it was very stressful trust me!), and im sure Richard is aware of that.

But like he says he is still running it so everyone wins really and i know the LGBT committee wish him all the success in the world, hes worked hard he deserves results. And its all just something to keep you ticking over until the ulitmate event of ultimateness that is the summer queer bash takes place on june 9th...

That's cool. A very worthy cause, and a slap in the fact for anyone who thinks you're doing this for profit. I really admire all the hard work you've put in. I know firsthand from Adam as well as friends who are involved in the local music scene how much stress it takes to organise a night and how the rewards stemming from it aren't usually financial.

I'm so pleased my exam is on Wednesday morning, not Thursday morning so I can come. Yay!

Just to clear this up for everyone....

No-one on the committee is against this event taking place and I expect the majority of us will be going along too.... We allowed Rich to keep the booking in his own name until further arrangements could be made, it wasn't completely cancelled. The only change that we made was taking it out of the LGBT name as it's not an event run by us.
The only reason we did this was because of any possible repercussions experienced being charged back to the society for an event we're not even organising and therefore preventing any other events or purchases being made, possibly those that have already been organised. It's simply something we had to do to and have tried to keep any cancelling of the night to an absolute worst case scenario. But the nights still going ahead so there's no probs!

I hope it's a really successful night and wish him all the best with it

just go and have fun for crying out loud. why does everything have to turn into a political drama?

good luck rich. i'll probably attend. or i may stick at home doing either of the following while shaking my fist at the wall

1) picking apart the name of the event and cursing the lack or use of certain words
2) crying because the LGBT isn't running it
3) bitching about the font used in the poster

Okay, erm, I do understand what is being said but is the society going to *support* the event - meaning, is the event going to be included in emails and stuff? I think it's really important that it is as the LGBT should be supporting all non-profit making 'gay' nights in Leeds. When I was on the committee we supported Razzmatazz and when I was in first year the committee supported the first EVER curious, which happened in Stylus and *wasn't* and LGBT event at all.

I was disappointed to see its ommission from the last LGBT email.

as Chris has said the committee has been in support of this night since we first found out about it. the only reservation that we had was that the booking was made in the name of the LGBT.

the upshot of our decision was that if anything bad happened (and god forbid that it does) the LGBT would have been held responsible. this would mean that we as a society could have been left open to any amount of repercussions from the uni up to and including having our status as a society taken away from us. taking the name of the LGBT off the booking of the event was done in the best interest of the society as a whole and not out of spite as some people have suggested.

we did not, and never did consider canceling this event outright. we had consulted the union and rich about what could be done with taking the booking out of our name. that is all.

i personally wish rich all the best with this venture and for the record i know that most of the committee and myself will be attending the event. it should be a great night and a welcome break from exam stress.

It would also be nice if people could remember that the majority of us have never been on a society committee before and we've only been in this one for 2 1/2 weeks so far so we're still finding our feet with it. It would be nice if we could have some support from everyone rather than digs seeing as tho we're trying to do things for the good of you and the society.... We're just trying to do whats best

I don't think the committee is doing anything wrong to be honest. At least it appears that way to me. I think the transition has worked out quite well so don't be disheartened.

It's just the drama queens that need to be shot.

That's neither here nor there really. The committee is there to represent and listen to its members, whether they agree with there opinion or not. These aren't digs. They are concerns, suggestions and issues that people, no, members of the society you are part of running, are concerned about.

This is a suggestion, not a dig:

I think the society should be more actively supporting this night - not putting it's name to it, but at least letting its members know about the night via the weekly emails that are sent out so that it can be well attended. This hasn't happened yet as far as I know?

And Laura is right. Develop thick skins, and fast! Often time, people who seem to be making criticisms are simply trying to be constructive and do have the good of the society at heart. I found it hard taking (often constructive) criticism at first, but you'll have to get used to it.

As i have read the comittee have never said that they do not support the event nor have they made a full comment on their stance. We will be encouraging members to attend, any night designed for lgbt members is always welcome! I hope nobody has taken any offence regarding this event. I think people should go Richard has worked hard for it and in such needs alot of praise as he doesnt have a comitee standing behind him. As for the comitee we listen to members as much as possible.

Please can we stop getting political wether this is meant or not!

Just get ready for the Gay night at the uni! and can we please make this postive its a fun night! not a competition!!!

I never said you weren't supporting it hon. I just think you could maybe include it on an email to advertise it more widely.

And just to say, as far as I can see, you're all doing a great job so far, so well done. Just try to take suggestions and comments in the spirit that they are meant :)
