Hello random person, i take it you may have eather just coem out while in the uni or are already out but are planning to come here next year.
I am out in halls and i haev had no problems at all, so i am sure you will be fine, but, if you are homophobicaly attacked eather in halls or in the uni itself there are many ways to defend yourself set up in the union.
Simply telling someone will mean that if you know the person who did it, you can get them warned or even kicked out if you share a flat with them.
There realy is nothing to worry about

If you speak to most students in Leeds, you'll find that very few have ever had homophobic experiences in their Halls or at uni.

Of course, the LGBT Assembly is set up to represent every LGBT student at the university so if you ever do experience homophobia, it will be dealt with swiftly and effectively. The Accommodation Office has special measures in place to deal with homophobia in Halls of Residence.

Everyone I've come across so far has been alright with it, as far as I know. I've been told that a couple of the lads in my hall have had the odd typical enjoying-lesbianism sort of comment, but they've never said anything directly to me, Lisa or Jeni, right?

Generally speaking, people here are pretty accepting, so you should be fine. Just do whatever you feel comfortable with. Being out at uni is ace, though the first few times you tell people you are a bit worried about what their reaction will be. But when you get positive responses, you feel more confident about it, so can be more open and it's all good!

with a spoon.

don't let homophobia put you off leeds. it's probably one of the 'easiest' places to be gay at... and besides, if people are mean to you because you are 'queer' we go round with pitchforks and torches to smite them. Failing that we have a LGBT Assembly (see the section) that is armed with a metaphoric ballista of diplomacy and equal rights crap to bury the homophobes into submission... then we have Nic!

That said, there should be no problems
Welcome, (if u r coming here)

I've met a couple on my course, although strangely I get on with them. When u mea homophobic, do mean ppl who hate you or dont talk to u becuase u may be of that persuasion or do mean ppl who dont like the lifestyle or homosexuality but dont hold that against u as a person? (i hope that makes sense!)

Erm, no offence but I don't really see the distinction. If someone disagrees with an inate part of me that I have no control over, they are in effect, disagreeing with me.

Replace the word gay/homosexual with black and it becomes a little clearer. You know?

It takes a pretty tolerant person to tolerate the bigotry of others. I don't think I could sit side by side with a homophobic person without showing some animosity.

And, as John said, I fail to see the distinction between the two. John put it more eloquently, and that's why he might teach your kids English one day, and I might teach them geography. (Hiss.)

lol I did not mean that in a dodgy way at all thank you very much!!! I was just thinking about my flatmate who can touch the top of the fridge with her foot and touch the floor with her hand at the same time (god knows how!) and thinking I couldn't do it :P although why I randomly thought about that I'm not quite sure... (and I have to admit, if someone said it to me I'd probably lower the tone! lol)

I think what people are getting at, is Leeds has its fair share of homophobes as does everywhere! The halls of residents have systems in place if homophobic attcks take place also the comitee and the assembly are here to help if anything ('Touch wood') does happen.

I think what John is trying to get at is your more likely to get silent homophobia, one example i can think of was in my halls ( i lived in a block with 17 people 4 of us are 'queer') one boy had the opinion that he was ok that we us i.e. what we were/are so to speak but it was the act he had a problem with. I just didn't talk to him its his problem.

All i can say is surround yourself with lots of new friends and you'll forget the homophobes that may arise!

And again if your coming to Leeds see you in September

ok I have lived in leeds all my life. I have been out of the closet well actually never been in it meh anyway I notice one thing homophobia in leeds has always been here, But just yesterday i walked out of my mates to go buy some wine for our meal and two children playing in the street of a nice midleclass suburb shouted 'Gay' at me as i walked away the kids were about 8 and 4 which made me think. people wanting to procreate should need to be vetted first if kids are raised this way they will have that opinion. its not their foult that they are ignorant.

I suggest this plan we discussed it after the bottle of wine.

Get all the following
Chavs
Dole pushers (unemployed whom dont look for work)
Kilroy silk
Lowerie turner
BNP voters
NF/ BNP members

then we take a city like Hull or somewhere similar and build a huge wall around it then leave them there we colud call it the RE EDUCATION center it wouldnt so much allow re educate them as allow them to live and die amongst like minded people sorry sub humans.

result lower taxes as no one is on the dole, cleaner streets, better pensions, better public transport etc so to sum it up UTOPIA.

I get what you mean! yesterday i was walking through little London! (not a nice place at the best of times) I was holding hands with my girlfriend as we do were ever we go ( we both have a brash cheek about what we are but mainly because the stares are funny) And we got shouted at by a bunch of boys OMG are you two lesbians? they must have been about 10 and 12!

But on the other hand i was in town last week again with my girfriend and a drunk approached me and Sam(my gf) and started saying things i couldn't understand a word he said, but some boys dressed like chavs approached him and was like look mate stop it! it was so nice of him. So not everyone like that is like that.

I was brought up in the most ultimate scally place in the world so i'm used to everyting for anything. Leeds is mild in comparison.

I've heard of Kirby, was born in Widnes... it's all around that area.

Don't be put off coming 2 Leeds because u are afraid that there may be homophobia in your halls. I was housed in a flat last year with absolutely brilliant people who became my 2nd family (we all love each other 2 bits) & a block who were so cool and open minded, I was lucky that I got put with such a great bunch of people, everyone in our block just clicked n got along. When ur put in halls u'll generally find that ur housed with decent people who u'll get along with.

Cases of homophobia/biphobia/transphobia in halls of residence are few and far between, in the last 5yrs there have only been 2 serious incidents and a few complaints about people been housed with bigoted arseholes. The assembly has been working with accomodation services to address the issue, to ensure that they inform students of people they can talk to if they are experiencing problems and wish to make a complaint or move rooms/halls and people they can turn to for support and representation such as the LGBT Society and Assembly. The assembly is in place to fight for the equality & rights of LGBT Students, a major part of this is challenging discrimination, which we quite happily do (gives us an excuse 2 make lots of noise).

University is a pretty accepting community, where it is easier to come out/be out and meet like-minded people, as well as access support etc. In addition to the LGBT society & assembly been there to support and look after the welfare of LGBT students, we've also got a fantastic students advice centre who provide support information and advice. The university staff are also been trained in LGBT issues and working with LGBT people, there are hate-crime reporting schemes in place for LGBT students to report hate crime if they are unfortunate enough to experience an incident, the society run plenty of events and the assembly provides opportunities to get involved with LGBT politics, so theres alot in place for LGBT students at Leeds.

Not forgetting to mention that last year we were voted 6th best university to be gay at, which is a great accomplishment! The course of the past year has seen multiple changes which are of benefit to LGBT students and has seen attitudes towards LGBT people improve, so we've more than likely moved up in the ranks! You've got nothing to be apprehensive about if u come here, u'll be in good hands & if anything goes wrong we've got the 'hit squad'

Plus I'm still gonna b in Leeds next year and making full use of my recently awarded honorary life membership to LUU!

And, if like me you're put with arseholes (not homophobic arseholes, mind!) you'll be sharing your Hall with a few hundred people and there are bound to be a couple you'll adore. And even if that fails, there are so many societies, the LGBT being just one of them. Take the opportunity to explore every aspect of your identity, be it the gayer bit, the Acapella-singer bit, or the Jitsu-loving bit.

Who doesn't live in my breast?? (it might actually be the easier question to answer lol)

You do find alot of acceptance in places you wouldn't expect it. Big burly rugby blokes are the kind I cudda told u r accepting & lovely... thats partly why I've got such a soft spot for rugby blokes. Alot of the sports teams at Leeds are accepting of LGBT people, same as alot of the societies are. Occasionally you'll get the odd dickhead but there are channels for dealing with this like I've mentioned above.

Around Leeds there is a fairly relaxed attitude, walkabout is brilliant to go in, there are alot of people there who are sound. Fab cafe only seems to be accepting of female couples, fruity at stylus in the union seems to be alot more accepting of gay and bi males, it varies depending where you go and the type of people who go there. I'll quite honestly hand on heart say NEVER go to Evolution, it is a ****hole filled with narrow minded little twats & don't even get me started on the bouncers there... I went there with my flatmate for her birthday last year and lasted a total of 20mins before walking out with another flatmate and going to the base following 3 incidents.

If you've got any questions you want to ask about the university, halls or the union to put your mind at ease before coming here, feel free to post them on here or e-mail me at lgbt.assembly@leeds.ac.uk & I'll try to answer them for you or find out the answer if I don't know it.

In the meanwhile good luck with exams andstuff, hope u get the results you want & possibly see you in september.

to get back onto topic u filthy ppl, the main thing in halls is just to know that in case there you do experience any homophobicness (if thats even a word) then there are a lot of systems in place to help you. I got a bit of abuse and bullying in halls but as you can see its really not that common.

I'm a loiner too and had pretty much the reverse experience! I mean yeah there is homophobia, but I've never really got any. I had a couple of lads shout at me and my ex "hot lesbian action" just cos we were holding hands lol And just recently had the typical straight man appreciation of lesbianism with my girlfriend. But apart from that, I've only occasionaly heard people say 'are they lesbians?' (give out the award for observation skills!!)

Whereas on the other hand, my mate and her girlfriend have had loads of crap, cos my mate lives in Armley (not that Meanwood is some sort of haven, but I've not really been massively gay there) The other day I was walking through her estate and this group of chavs started throwing stones at me, but that's cos I was a "f***ing mosher". And they told me to get a hair cut of all things! lol
Um, I think the point of that was generally, grr chavs, or scallies as they used to be known as round here! And that it's not necessarily just cos we're gay. It's just that they're that stupid and attack anything that's not exactly like them!
