We all know the assembly has been doing fantastic work this year for all LGBT students but I thought I would use Nic's summary of what issues we have been involved with and are continuing to campaign on.

1. blood service ban on gay & bi men

2. gettin the government to close loopholes in equality laws which allow religious groups/organisations to discriminate against LGBT people

3. cutting waiting lists for GUM clinics & fighting to see that any1 requesting an appointment is seen in 48hours.

4. better quality PSHE & Sex education lessons in schools that are inclusive of LGBT people

5. Lobbying for better/equal treatment of lesbian women requesting smear tests (there are cases of them currently been turned away, due to their sexuality)

6. gettin involved with LGBT history month and helping educate people about the various law changes that happened when & show respect 4 the people who have fought damn hard to get us where we are now.

7. anonymous/secondary marking (thats recently just been passed by the university & will be coming in force)

8. pushing for schools to incorparate homophobia & transphobia into their anti-bullying rules and build effective strategies to deal with those incidents.

9. turning civil partnerships into gay marriages (still aint equal, ya know)

10. challenging discrimination of LGBT people in the media (take Leeds Student as the example on this)

Just about to go out but will try an expand on these issues in later posts.

We need more involvement, creative ideas/campaigns & a small bit of effort. Again with the numbers, theres been 2/3 of us puttin a shedload of effort in... if theres more people involved givin less effort the same amount will still be achieved n built on.

How does one go about it? These are issues I'd like to help with, but I don't know where to start, really! Isn't there some kind of administrative work as in... sending emails to people to ask them for support, or maybe putting together complaint letters to send to organisations? That's the kind of work I could do alongside my duties as A Cappella Singers Co-Secretary.... unless you're afraid I might send the wrong email to someone and tell them I'm gonna sing for them.

lol yeah theres loadsa admin work involved, theres letters of complaints, typing up motions for union council, proof-reading/writin information sheets/booklets, addin assembly stuff on2 that section of the LUU site, writin/proof-readin articles for the paper, e-mails to people n establishin a mailing list, altho those things can be split between other people, like writing n proof reading things... if someone cares enough about an issue they are welcome to write about it n stuff.

Alby, I wouldn't expect any less of ya 2 send out e-mails tellin ppl ur gonna sing 4 them lol... u do in coffee hour anyway, ur a human jukebox

ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stop wi disney stuff!

Simple thing is we just need more involvement next year, Joeys not a full-time worker n havin 2 fit life around work, so meetings should be up n running again. apologies for this, i know its caused a **** up, but at end of day i needed 2 earn 2 live.

Will have more ideas about direction of next years campaigns following conference next week. I'll put my report on the forum... may take a while tho cos am hangin round home for a few days after due to unforeseen nasty circumstances and the fact that my home mates need me & i need them. Don't worry tho, am at conference 2 represent Leeds n gain info 4 use etc, and that just wot am gonna do.
